UNITED ,sTATEs PATENT oFFIcE.
WILLIAM F. KIESEL, JR., OF ALTONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOGOMOTIVE.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WrILLIAMF. Kinsnt,
Jr., a citizen of the United States, and resident of Altoona, Blairl county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements i-n Locomotives,
of Whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway vehicles and hasparticular reference to a structure for providing suiiicient lateral motion of the body frame with reference to the truck and also to allow the truck to swivel.-
On modern large locomotives with the l increasednumber of drivers it is dii'cult to provide suiiicient truck side motion with the ordinarylink suspenslon and in order lto obtain sufficient side motion on curves and also to permit swiveling of the truck I have arranged a construction in which the body frame is supported centrally of the truck by means of a rocker casting which permits relative lateral motion of the truck and body and also permits the truck to swivel.
The above andother objects and the novel features of my invention will be apparent vfrom the followingA description taken in connection with the drawing in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view of a truck equipped with the structure .embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the same, partly in front elevation and partly in central transverse section; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are, respectively, a'
plan view, a longitudinal crossl sectional Vv1ew and a transverse. cross sectional View of the combined bolster center plate and rocker bearing; and Figs. 6, 7 and 8,-are
respectively, a plar view, an end view and a4 longitudinaly sectionalv view of the rocker casting. -f
Referring to' the drawing, the two-axle truck illustrated in Figs. l and 2 consists of the usual axles 10 and 11 and'the pairs of wheels 12 and 13 mounted thereon.l The truck has the usual for' any preferred form of truck frame which comprises a transom 14 mountedat its ends upon the longitudinally extending springs 15 at both sides of the truck. The transom 14 has parts 141 located centrally of the truck and to these parts is secured a fulcrum casting 16. The
, fulcrum casting has the anges 161 which are bolted to the parts 141 and on its upper side hasa pair of spaced vertical side mem-A Specicaton of Letters Patent.
bers 17' which are provided with openings to receive the trunnion bolts 18.
'Ihe fulcrurn casting is locatedicentrally of the two-axle truck and forms the pivotal support for the rockerV 19 which is shown in detail in Figs. 6,7 and 8. Therocker 19 .consists of a single casting which tapers toward its lower .end Awhen viewed from one side as seen in Fig. 7. The casting has two pairs of jaws at itslower end, each jaw consisting of the spaced members 20 which receive the supporting flanges 17 between Patented Dec. 5, 1916. 4 Application led March 20, 1916. Serial No. 85,429.
them. Each of the members 20 is provided with an opening 21 which register-With the v,openings in the membersv 17 whereby the grocker is pivotally supported on the trun nion bolts 18. ASuitable bearings 22 are provided between the openings 21 and the bolts 18. The vpairs of jaws are spaced apart a sufficient distance so that access may be had yto the nuts 23 and the jaws are connected together by a. suitable stifening web 24. The upper end of the rocker casting has-a head 25 which is substantially circular in outline and has a top bearing surface provided with a fiat portion 26 extending diametrically across the head from one side to the other. The remaining part of the top surface of the head on opposite, sides Y of the iat part 26 is curvedor inclined away from the top fiat part 26 as at 27 along the curve having its center at the pivotal center of the axisthrough the openings 21.
The car or locomotive body is provided with the under` frame 30 and has two parallel side frame members 31 between which the body or frame supporting casting 32 is mounted. This casting is shown in detail in Figs. 3', 4 and 5 and has sides 33 by means of which it is bolted to the side frame members 31. The sides 33 are connected together by suitable stiifening ribs34 which may have a portion of the frame resting thereon. The web 35 which connects the sides 33 is higher at itscenter than at the edges as at 351 and the higher portion of the web 35 constitutes the bottom of a cavity-36 in the lower side of ythe casting. The bottom face 37 of the cavity constitutes the center plate of the body frame. Two opposite side walls of the cavlty are extended downwardly to provide wings or flanges 38 disposed on vopposite sides of the longitudinal center 'line of the truck. These flanges are connected to the sides 33 of the casting by suitliner plates 42 are secured by means l4:3 tothe bottom of the-cavity 36 for the able strengtheningwebs 39, At the rear the' casting has an"extensioni40 which is pro-.
@vided with flanges 41 at its sides for Secur- -ng the casting to vanother part of the under frame of the body. A f
The cavity 36'of thev frame supportlng casting is designed to receive and mesh -With the upper endofgtbe rocker 19.V Slitatlre o o s purpose of alin'ing the frame and also Serve mg wear.-
