CORNER-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ASHTON P. DERBY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corner-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of corner joints for furniture and similar articles, and while capable of use in articles of various kinds, where a rigid. tight joint is required, it is particularly designed as a corner joint for chair frames. For the purposes of illustration therefore an embodiment of the invention suitable for wooden chairs will be described, but it will be understood that the invention is applicable generally to other structures, and its more general application is contemplated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment of the invention,- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair in which the improved corner joint is incorporated; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the joint members assembled and locked together; Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view showing the parts in position before the locking pins are inserted; Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the assembled parts on line 44 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail in section similar to that of Fig. 4, showing the parts before the locking pins are inserted.
The corner piece, which in this embodiment of the invention constitutes a leg of a chair, is shown at a, and the two angle members, constituting the side frames of the chair seat, are shown at b, b. The angle members 6, b and corner member a may be united by a mortise and tenon joint or by other usual or suitable means.

The tie member d is provided with holes d at its ends, in such position that the distance between the holes d is slightly less than the distance between the holes 6 when the angle members 6, b are assembled in the frame in normal position but before they are finally locked together by inserting the locking pins. Thus the holes d and b before locking will not register accurately but will overlap as best shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
Locking pins 0, having tapering or beveled ends 0, are inserted into holes 6 with their bevels facing outwardly or toward the ends of the tie member d, and when driven home through holes 6 and holes d the beveled surfaces 6' will engage the sides of holes a3? on the outer side or side toward the ends of the tie member, causing the holes (Z to ride up the beveled surfaces 6' on to the body parts of the pins 6, thereby forcibly drawing the angle members a slightly toward each other and binding or compressing the angle member 6, I), and corner piece a together in tightly locked relation under the resulting tension in tie member (Z.
The channel portion d of the tie member is provided with a hole through which the screw f passes and is screwed at its end into the cover piece or seat 0. The channeling of the tie member at at d, along the part between the ends which are secured in the angle members 6, stifl'ens and reinforces the tie member against the transverse strain applied thereto by the screw f. The frame members, thus united as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4, are therefore all securely bound and held together with the locking strain in all directions borne by the metal tie piece 03.
