To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HARRY Y. SCAR- noRoUGH, citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Urinals, of which the following is a spccilication.

The object of the invention is to provide a sanitary urinal which will dispense with the use of running water.

A further object is to provide means for automatically sterilizing the contents of the bowl at predetermined intervals.

A further object is to provide improved means for deodorizing the bowl.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.

The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a urinal bowl embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view on a section line at right angles substantially to the section line of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.

In the drawing, 2 represents the walls of a urinal bowl, having an upper chamber 3 and a lower chamber 4 formed therein, separated by a substantially horizontal wall 5, provided with an opening 6 in which a suitable grating or screen 7 is removably mounted. In this upper bowl refuse matter', such as cigars and cigarette stubs, matches and the like, are collected and prevented by the screen 7 from entering the chamber' 4. The lower wall of the chamber 4 has an extension 8, preferfbly circular in form, provided with a draw-off plug 9 through which access may be had conveniently to the bottom of the chamber 4 for cleansing purposes and for drawing off the accumulation of sediment which may collect in the lower portion of the extension 8.

with the constricted portion 12 and leads to a suitable discharge point.

The top of the chamber 4 in the rear of the chamber 3 has a horizontal shelf or wall 14 above which is a chamber 15 provided with a cover 1S which is readily removable to permit access to the chamber. l/Vithin the chamber 15 and at Vone side thereof is a can 19 of suitable material, preferably sheet metal, adapted to contain a chemical solution and in the bottom of this can is a receptacle 20 having a barrel 21 formed therein in which the plunger 22 is slidable. Ports 23 extend through the wall of the barrel from the interior of the can 19 tothe receptacle 20 and similar ports 24 lead from the receptacle into the upper part of the chamber 4 and said plunger 22 is provided with annular recesses 25 and 26 and the lower end of said plunger has a rod 27 whereon a float 28 is mounted. Then the plunger 22 is raised to the limit of its upward movement, the groove 26 will register with the ports 23 and allow the chemical solution to flow from the can 19 into the receptacle 20 and when the plunger descends, the annular groove 25 will'be moved to a point opposite the ports 24 and will allow the solution from the receptacle 20 to ow through the ports 24 into the chamber 4 for the purpose of sterilizing the liquid therein. This discharge will take place when the float drops by gravity after the liquid by siphonic action in the tube 10 has been drawn out to a predetermined' level. The release or discharge of the chemical solution into the chamber 4 will be entirely automatic, and when the float has once been properly adjusted the device will require no attention except to fill the can 19 with a suitable solution. A Ventilating pipe 16 preferably leads from the chamber 4 up through the chamber 15 and may be connected with a chimney or draft flue, not shown.

The liquid eXcreta entering the chamber 4 will slowly rise in the pipe 10 until it is above the level of the arch of the Siphon, whereupon siphonic action will be established and the liquid will be drawn out of the chamber until the level is below the receiving end of the siphon. The constricted portion 12 of the pipe operates to hold back the overflow at the arch of the pipe which would result from the comparatively slow accumulation in the chamber until the liquid reaches a level where the pipe will be filled and siphonic action begun. I prefer also in this device to provide means for deodorizing the walls of the chamber 3 which consists in providing a can 29 in the chamber 15 having a plunger cylinder 30 communicating with the interior of said can through a port 31. A plunger cylinder 32 is provided within said cylinder and is operated by a stem 34: which projects upwardly through an opening in the cover 18 above. A spring 35 normally holds the said plunger in its raised position. The inner wall of the cylinder has a port 36 therein leading to a pipe 37 which has a discharge end 38 in the rearwall of the chamber 3 in position to deliver1 a deodorizing solution into the said chamber and upon the wall 5. This stem 34: is in position to be depressed to force down the plunger and eject the liquid from the can 29 into the pipe 37. T his deodorizing solution may be delivered by an automatically operating device, such as the valve controlled by the lioat, which I have not thought it necessary to illustrate herein.

I have shown this invention applied to a single urinal apparatus, but it may be utilized in connection with the trough type, as well.

' rThis device may be made in various sizes and in various ways the details of construction herein shown and described may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.

I claim as my invention:

LA urinal comprising a bowl and a siphonic discharge pipe therefor, a receptacle for a chemical solution and means controlled by the rise and fall of the liquid in said bowl for delivering the chemical solu tion thereto.

2. A urinal comprising a bowl divided wall intermediate to the top and bottom of the bowl and dividing it into an upper and lower chamber, said wall having perforations therein, a tank mounted in said bowl in the rear of said upper chamber and having means for delivering a deodorizing solution to said upper chamber.

5. A urinal comprising a bowl having an upper and a lower chamber formed therein, with a perforated wall between them, a siphonic discharge pipe communicating with said lower chamber and means controlled by the rise and fall of the liquid in said lower chamber for delivering a chemical solution thereto.

6. A urinal comprising a bowl having a wall therein dividing it into an upper and a lower chamber, said wall having an opening leading from one chamber to the other, a siphonic discharge pipe mounted in the wall of said lower chamber and projecting .upwardly therein and of comparatively small cross sectional area and operating to retard the discharge of the liquid from said lower chamber until it rises above the level of the siphonic arch and lls said pipe.
