Specication of Letters Patent.

To all cli/'tom t may concern Be it known that we, VIVIAN A. MATTING- LEY and WILLIAM T. RIDLEY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permanent River-Bank Pavements, of which the following is a specification.

The object sought by us in this invention is to provide the banks of rivers, gulfs, bays, sounds and other waters that are subject to being undermined or cut away by the currents of streams with a pavement that will be held permanently in position thereby preventing the destruction of valuable property adjacent such streams or waters. We accomplish this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l illustrates a top view of our device; Fig. 2 an end view of the same; Fig. 3 a top view of a connecting block of the pavement showing rods, loops and bolts in engagement with the cables, and Fig. 4 is a cross section of a block showing loops and bolts, a wedge and a bumper traveling on a Y cable and a line fastened to the bumper by which to draw the bumper back from the wedge.

Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A representing a builder barge and B a rod passing through openings B B to support a cable C above an apron F upon which to rest blocks G G while being made fast to cable C. Said blocks are preferably of concrete, reinforced with an iron rod. D represents a tackle, D is an eye bolt to hold the lower end of the tackle and D is a clamp to clamp the upper end of the tackle to the cable.

C is a spool for the cable and E is a capstan for regulating and holding the barge in place.

I I are wedges having teeth I I- by which to fasten each block to cable C.

J is an iron bumper adapted to slide down cable C and drive the wedge to make block VGr fast to the cable, and J is a line to draw the bumper back.

K is an anchor line by which to start the paving with cables C C-, said anchor line havin one end secured to anchor K. The opposlte end of said anchor line is fastened to a dead man L. Cables C C- are preferably set two feet apart and blocks G G- are preferably four feet in length.

H H are reinforcing rods through the concrete blocks, N N are loops and N N are bolts to hold the cables.

H is a pin serving as a fastener to keep the Wedge in position.

M M are cavels or timber heads for fastening the builder barge to a boat or bank.

O is a rope or line by which to fasten a barge to the bank and to capstan E.

What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. The combination in a device of the kind described comprising a builder barge provided with an apron, of a cable having connection with a plurality of concrete blocks and a plurality of cables spaced at equal distances apart, reinforcing rods through said block loops near the end of each block and bolts therethrough to engage thc cables, a line, an anchor at one end and a dead man at the opposite end, a wedge with teeth on the top thereof, said teeth being adapted to engage with the cable, a pin serving as a fastener to hold the wedge in position, a bumper to drive said wedge between the blockand cable and a line to draw said bumper back toward the barge.

In a permanent pavement for protecting the banks of streams, the combination with a builder barge, of a plurality of concrete blocks, a plurality of cables spaced apart, reinforcing rods to engage each block and bolts to engage the cables, a line with an anchor at one end and a, dead man at the opposite end, a toothed wedge to engage the cable, a fastener, a bumper and a line to draw the bumper back.
