The operation of the device is as follows:
The sheet of paper to be stamped is placed between the lower plate 49 and the closure plate 52 and pressure is brought to bear upon the outer casing-forcing the outer casing down upon the lower plate whichwill, of course, cause an impression to bemade upon the paper and' at the saine time the teeth 10 will form an impression upon the rear face of the carbon web 61,-which for the present purpose is white, thereby lmakmit the outward movement of4 face of the closure to smear the contents of a file ing ja permanent record of each item stamped. At the same time, the lugs 47 will engage the projecting foot 446 of the operating lever 45 which willK causethe frame 36 to move forward and enable thelratchet pawls 32 to 'engagethe next succeeding tooth upon the ratchet wheels 31. From the foregoin description it will be seen ythat a very e cient device has been produced wherebyv the s ring 39, as illustrated in Fig. 3, will be e iminated since the opening of the bottom plate 49 relative to the casing 1 will'be caused by means of the spring 59 exclusively. It will thus be seen that I have produced a portable printing stamp in the nature of an oblong box-like structure substantially thin so as to be conveniently carried in the lpocket.
A primary field of usage -for devices of this character suggests itself in the` work of bill collection.
