To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST FRYKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Souris. in the county of Bottineai'r. State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Piston-Ring; and I' do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear; and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved exp'ansible piston ring, particularly adapted for use in connection with pistons and the like and at the ends of cylinders, to prevent leakage of steam or other expansive fluids.
An object of the invention is the provision of a piston ring ha ving separable ends, which are considerably less in thickness than a diametrically opposite portion of said ring. In other words. the wall of the ring tapers in thickness in opposite directions from a point diametrically opposite said separable ends. to said separable ends. thereby aii'ording means to cause the ring to expand against the cylindrical wall of the cylinder.
A further. object of theinvention is to.
provide the separable ends with sidewise overlapping parts and an inner cover plate underlying said sidewise overlapping parts. thereby affording a joint. which is steam or fluid escape proof.
A further object of the invention is to provide means upon one face of the cover plate engaging correspondingly shaped ,ineans upon the inner-face of one ofsaid separable ends, to force the sidewise overlapping parts closely together.
In practical fields. the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of'parts. as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
