DBAFT-EQUALIZING NECK-YOKE.
rename.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR J. LEI-IMAN and CARL H.- Fannorn, citizens of the United States, and residents of Slater, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizing Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the class of carriages and Wagons and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in draft equalizing neck yokes for cultivators and the like.
Our invention has for its primary object the provision of a novel and improved type of neck yoke for association with the free end of a pole or shaft to relieve the draftanimals of undue side strain when drawing a plow, cultivator or similar agricultural machine, the yoke being adapted to accomodate itself to various lateral movements of the pole when the Wheels of the cultivator or plow strike obstructions. Of course, we do not limit our invention to its use in connection with plows, this being only mentioned as indicative of one advantageous use of the device.
Another object of our invention is to provide a neck yoke of the class described which may be quickly and easily attached to any of the existing types of poles without materially altering the structure of the pole.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of our improved adjustable neck yoke will appear from the following detail description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a neck yoke embodying the improvements of our invention, the same being shown applied in operative position; Fig. 2 is a fragmental enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates the body of our improved neck yoke which is preferably tubular having removable plugs 2 and 4 in the opposite ends thereof. Of course, if desired any other suitable arrangement of the tubular member may be provided in so far as the end openings are Specification of Letters Patent.

concerned, since one of the ends must be open to permit the carriage described in detail hereinafter to be inserted. A pair of rings 5 and 6 are provided arranged adjacent the opposite ends of the body 1, said rings being connected with the body by means of loops 7 and 8 formed integrally therewith. A slot 9 is provided in the body 1., guiding and reinforcing flanges 10 being arranged along the marginal edges of said slot and terminating short of each end of the body.
The slot 9 extends entirely to one end of the body for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. We provide acarriage C composed of side bars 11 between which are mounted anti-friction rollers 12 and 13. A connecting arm 14 is provided and is formed with a head 15 having a transverse opening 16 therein, a pin 17 being arranged in said opening and engaged with the side bars 11. The outer free end of the arm 14 is provided with an apertured enlargement 18 adapted to connect with the loop 19 of an eye-bolt 20, said bolt 20 extending through the pole 21 and being maintained therein by means of a nut or the like 22.
One of the draft-animals is connected with the ring 5 and the other draft-animal with the ring 6 in the usual manner. It will be seen that when the pole moves laterally of the line of draft its movement will be accommodated by the carriage C and instead of placing undue strain on the animals the carriage will permit the pole to move rela tive the yoke 1, all of the parts returning to normal position when the pole again takes the normal position. The device also tends to equalize draft at all times. To remove the carriage the plug 4r is removed and the carriage may then. be withdrawn from the body 1, the slot 9 accommodating the arm 14:. When used as preferred, on a cultivator, the latter will aways run straight.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of our invention may be had. and while we have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, we desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described our invention, What We claim as new and desire to gitudinally mounted in said body, ring members integrally formed on the free ends of said body for connection with the draft means, said tubular member having a slot therein extending longitudinally thereof, said slot being short of one end thereof but extending'to the opposite end to provide means for associating the carriage in said tubular member, said carriage comprising a pair of anti-friction rollers, side bars connecting the said rollers, a pin member connecting said side bars centrally thereof, a connecting arm pivotally mounted on said pin, an enlarged head formed on the said arm providing means for keeping the side arms in spaced relation, said head being provided with transverse opening to mount the connecting arm on said pin for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, we aflix our signatures hereto.
ARTHUR J. LEHMAN. CARL H. FAUROTE.
