To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Horn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pantograph Engraving-lrlachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pantograph engraving machines of the type wherein a drawing is traced on a metal roll by a series of diamond points which latter are guided by a stylus made to trace the desired pattern ofllarger size than the reproduction on the r 1.
An important object resides in the direct drive of the roll to be engraved.
Another object is to provide an improved mounting and means of adjustment for the roll to be engraved.
Further the invention resides in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is an end or side elevation of a pantograph engraving machine embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentar front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 shows in partial section the mechanism for supporting one end of the roll. Fig. 1 is an elevation of the support for the opposite end of the roll, and Fig. 5 is a front view of the clutch employed in mounting the roll.
Using like characters of reference for corresponding parts throughout, the numeral 1 designates the standards of the supporting structure having secured thereto the tracks 2 over which move the wheels 3 of carriage 4..
Between the tracks is arranged the table on which the enlarged pattern is disposed to be traced by the stylus 6.
A frame 7 is secured to the carriage 1 in offset relation thereto to lie outwardly of the machine, as depicted in Fig. 2 and in each end of this frame is formed a vertical groove 8. A bracket 9 is adjustably disposed in each groove and has a bearing through which a screw 10 is threaded. The screws 10 oppose each other and have the terminals of a wire 11 secured thereto whereby on adjusting either screw the tension on the wire may be varied accordingly. around a grooved wheel 12 fixed to one end of a shaft 13 journaled in a bearing 14 of the machine. Thus, if the carriage is moved, rotation of the shaft will be effected through the wire and grooved wheel transmission.
On the opposite end of shaft 13 is mounted a clutch 15 for holding one end of the metal roll 16 which is to be engraved. The opposite end of the roll rests on a disk or wheel 17 carried on shaft 18, which latter is journaled in bearings 19, and is steadied from lateral movement on the disk by a pair of small wheels 20 arranged to engage the opposite sides of the roll.
The small wheels 20 are carried on the ends of stub shafts 21 which are carried by blocks 22, the latter being formed with threaded openings in which engage the right and left screw 23 whereby the wheels may be further spaced apart or contracted in accordance with the turning of the screw by its hand wheel 24. A bracket 25 in which the screw is swiveled retains the latter from longitudinal movement. By this provision rolls of different diameters may be accommodated.
As the diameters of the rolls 16 vary, it is necessary that the shaft 13 carrying the clutch 15 should be adjusted in order to maintain the line of the roll absolutely level for the operation of the diamonds or gravers 26 on the surface of the roll. To this end, bearing 14: is mounted on a double wedge support 27, the upper wedge section of which being moved vertically upon imparting relative sliding movement between the wedge sections. A screw 28 is provided for sliding one wedge relative to the other to perform this vertical adjustment of the shaft 13. As shown in Fig. 1 the abutting edges of the wedges are provided with scale divisions to facilitate the adjustment.
The diamond carrying bars 29 are carried by their carriages 30, in a well known man ner, the operation of the diamond carrying bars being the same as in all pantographs and the same action by the foot levers 31 being used to lift the diamond points from the roll or drop them thereon.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that a direct drive is obtained for the roll 16 and, further, that various sizes of rolls may be used and thatas the shaft 13 and its bearings are adjusted, the brackets 9 also may be shifted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In. a pantograph engraving machine, a supporting structure, a "carriage movable thereon, a frame on the carriage having its ends formed with vertical grooves, a bracket in each groove of the frame, a wire having its end's adjustably secured to the brackets, a vertically adjustable bearing, a shaft j ournaled in the bearing, agrooved wheel on the shaft about which the wire is engaged, a clutch carried by the shaft and adapted to engage one end of a roll, a rotatably mountedwheel on which the opposite end'of the roll is adapted to rest, spaced wheels adapted toengage the opposite sides of the roll, and means for varying the spacing of said spaced wheels.
2. In a pantograph engraving machine, a supporting structure, a carriage movable thereon, a frame on the carriage having its ends formed with vertical grooves, a bracket in each groove of the frame, a wire having its ends adjustably secured to the brackets, a vertically adjustable bearing, a shaft journaled in the bearing, a grooved wheel on the shaft about which the wire is engaged, a clutch carried by the shaft and adapted to engage one end of a roll, and means adapted for supporting the opposite end of the roll.

Copies of thispatent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of the combination with a roll to be engraved, of a support therefor including a rotatable wheel on which the roll is adapted to rest, spaced wheels adapted to engage the sides of the roll to hold it in position, a right and left screw and separable supporting means for the spaced wheels engaged with the screw to increase or decrease the space between the spaced wheels.
7. In a pantograph engraving machine, the combination with a roll to be engraved. of a wheel on which one end of the roll is adapted to rest, spaced positioning wheels for holding the roll 011 the first wheel, a clutch for holding the opposite end of the roll, and drive means for the clutch.
8. In a pantograph engraving machine, the combination with a roll to be engraved, of a wheel on which one end of the roll is adapted to rest, spaced positioning wheels for holding the roll on the first wheel, means for varying the space between the spaced wheels, a clutch for holding the opposite end of the roll, means for vertically adjusting the clutch, and a drive for the clutch.
9. In a pantograph engraving machine, the combination with a roll to be engraved, of a wheel on which one end of the roll is adapted to rest, spaced positioning wheels for holding the roll on the first wheel, means for varying the space between the spaced wheels, a clutch for holding the opposite end of the roll, a shaft supporting the clutch, a bearing for the shaft, a drive for the shaft. and vertically adjusting means for the bear ing comprising a double-wedge support and neans for imparting relative sliding between the wedge sections.
10. In a pantograph engraving machine. a grooved wheel adapted to be secured directly to the roll to be engraved, a movable frame, and a wire having its ends secured to the frame and its intermediate portion engaged about the wheel.
