To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST WALTER HIvEs, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Nightingale Road, Osmaston Road, Derby, in the county of Derby, England, have invented a new and useful Device for Priming the Induction- Pipes of'Internal-Combustion Engines, of
which the following is a full and complete Y chamber by means of a non-return valve e.

This invention relates to devices for priming the induction pipes of internal combustion engines for the purpose of facilitating starting, and it has for its objects to reduce the number of revolutions that the crankshaft of the engine usually has to be turned before the engine begins to function in its normal manner, to overcome the defects in existing devices, and to provide a more simple and conveniently handled arrangement than has hitherto been employed.
I attain the objects of this invention by employing in conjunction with vthe float chamber of the carbureter a supplemental chamberof predetermined size-#which is in communication with said float chamber 'by means of asuitable port or passage in which is a non-return valve. .This supplemental chamber can be put intoconnection with the induction pipe of the engine and is provided with means whereby 'air under slight pressure can be introduced for the purposeof injecting the liquid fuel in the supplemental chamber into the induction pipe of the engine in the form of a spray.
It will be understood that accordingto the present invention an explosion mixture is introduced into the induction pipe (and the cylinder whose inlet valve is open) which on being compressed and ignited will fire and therefore rotate the crankshaft of the engine. After the liquid fuel in the supplemental chamber is used up the engine should be drawing a` miXtue direct from the carbureter; if it does not, the induction can be primed again.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates-by way of example-some forms this invention may assume, Figure l is a diagrammatic view in elevation showing the general arrangement, and Fig. 2 'is' a view in sectional elevationon an enlarged scale-showing .one foam of construction.

Referring to Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing, a designates the cylinders of the englne, the carbureter, b1 the ioat cham- 'ber of the carbureter, and c the yinduction pipe connecting the carbureter to the engme.
Referring to F i-g. 2 of the accompanying drawing. Below the fioat chamber 1' of the carburetor is a. supplemental chamber 0l which is in communication. with said float To this chamber d are connected two pipes f and f1 'each of which extends vertically at least as high as the normal level of the liquid fuel .-in the float chamber so that said pipes form in e'ect part of the chamber o?.
A hand pump m is connected to the pipe f for introducing air into the supplemental chamber d. This hand pump may conveniently be the one employed to introduce air into the fuel supply tank when pressure feed is employed,'in which case the pipe 7, the pump m, and a pipe n leading to the fuel supply tank are all connected to a three-way tap z, so that by suitably operating the tap h the hand pump m can be put into communication either with the pipe or passage f or with the pipe n. The end the induction pipe c is so shaped as to form .a spraying nozzle.
In the extension of the pipe or passage f1 is a 'tap o which is inter-connected with the tap 7L by means of arms h1 and 01 and a coupling rod r. -As it is undesirable for the tap 0 to remain open when the engine is running, owing to the fact that if suchwere the casel fuel would be sucked through the pipe or passage f1 from the iioat chamber, means suclras'the spring 5' is provided to automatically close the tap'o when the operation of priming is complete.
To primethe induction pipe of the engine the taps L and 0 are manipulated to put'the pipe f into communication with the hand pump m and the pipe f1 into communication with the induction pipe c of the engine. The hand pump is then operated so as to force air into the pipe or passage f which displaces the liquid fuel therein and injects it into the induction pipe in the form of a spray, which will vary in density according to the area of nozzle employed. A predetermined 4number of strokes of the hand pump will provide a suitable explosive miX- ture in the induction pipe which, on being sucked into the cylinders and afterward compressed when cranking the engine, will fire in the usual Way.
The function of the non-return valve e, Which'may be of the reed type as shown, or of any other suitable type', is to permit the liquid fuel to flow from the float chamber' into the supplemental chamber d and pipes or passages f and f1 in which it Will attain the same orv approximately the same level as in the ioat chamber as shown by the dot and dash line a: e' in Fig. 2, and to prevent any pressure in said pipes or passages and in the supplemental chamber Z passing into the float chamber and thus avoid any disturbance of the level oi' the liquid at 'the jet or jets of the carbureter When the hand pump m is being operated,
,but in some cases, for instance if the'car- -wbureter is an ineiiieient one tor starting Without fiooding it, the non-return valve may be dispensed With.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A priming device for internal combustion engines comprising in combination with the float chamber of the carbureter and the induction pipe Connecting tlle carbureter to the engine, of a supplementary chamber, a port orvpassage connecting said chamber to the float chamber of the carbureter, a pipe or passage connecting the supplemental chamber to the induction pipe of the engine, said pipe having a vertically arranged part extending as high as the normal level of the liquid fuel in -the float chamber, a spraying nozzle on the end of said pipe Within the induction pipe, a hand-operated air pump, a pipe or passage connecting the supplementary chamber of the carburete'r with the air pump, a tap for shutting otl' the connection between the supplementall chamber and the induction pipe, means i" r shutting ott' the connection between the supplementary' chamber and the air pump, and meansl for causing the tap inthe pipe connecting the supplementary chamber ywith the induction pipe to close automatically.

In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the carbureter and induction pipe, of a supplemental chamber in connection witlrthe float chamber of the carbureter by means ,of a suitable port or passage; a nonreturn valve in said port or genezer 'connection with the float chamber of the carbureter by means of a suitable port or passage, a non-return valve 1n said port or passage, a pipe or passage connecting said supplemental chamber with the induction pipe of the engine and terminating therein in a spraying nozzle, a tap or valve in said pipe or passage, a pipe,V or passage connecting the supplemental chamber to the fuel supply tank, a three-'Way tap in said pipe or passage, a hand operated air pump connected to said three-Way tap, and means for automatically closing the tap or valve in the pipe or passage connecting the supplemental chamber with the induction pipe.
