UNTTED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
LEONARD A. YOUNG, OF HIGHLAND PARK, MICHIGAN.
SEAT-SPRING.
Highland Park, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Seat-Springs, and
declare the following to be la full, clear, and
exact description of the same, such as will @enable others skilled in the art t which, it
pertains to make and use `the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speclcation.
This invention relates to 'seat springs,
whether used for the seat proper or for the Y seat back.
The improved features comprise the use of a trussed double rim which makes a very strong margin for the seat spring; and a webbing provided with an elastic reinforcement. The webbing is of such a character that it provides a strong but yielding supporting surface over the top of the spiral springs. This supporting surface tends to eliminate the unevenness due to` the tops of the spiral springs. This is very advantageous as it makes possible. the upholstering of the springs with a much thinner layer of hair, thereby saving in this expensive padding.l This webbing also absolutely prevents any of the hair droppingdown between the spiral springs to interfere with their action and to initially require more hair for the cushion to take the place of that which in time sags down.
The character of the webbing with the elastic reinforcement land the character of the trussed ring will more fully appear in the specifications following. y
VIn the drawings, lFigure 1 is a top plan view of the cushion with the webbing on top of the springs, some of the parts being broken away to show the parts underneath. Fig. 2 is a cross section through 'the upholstered cushion. Fig. 3 is a sectional bottom plan view taken on the line A--A of Fig. 2, and being limited to one-half of the spring. This view' omits the outer rim wire.
Fig. 4 is a similar view with the outer rim' wire and the webbing in place.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1916.
Application lfiled February 25, 1916. Serial No. 80,499.
a designates the spiral springs, which are of the hour-glass type, although the 'exact form of the spiral is not material.
b designates the lower rim of S section. in which are pinched the bottom coils of the spiral springs and the bottom edge of the upholstering facing c. The springs are preferably tied together at the top by small links d.
The upper rimcomprises a trussed double rim. The inner rim wire e is first assembled on the springs by securing it to the top coils of the spiral spring by clips f. This inner rimv is provided with a plurality of offsets 'g forming, lin connection with the outer rim, trusses very effective for the purpose of .resisting side thrusts upon the rim. .E
The webbing m which forms the supporting surface above the spiral springs .comprises a two layer fabric sewed together by parallel linesof stitches h forming pockets in which are contained flat zig-zag springs z'.
The fabric is preferably of a heavy grade of cheese-cloth. Preferably I employ twowebbings, one (m) with the elastic reinforcement (the zig-zag wires) running in one di. rection, and the other (n) with the elastic reinforcement running in a direction at right angles to the direction of the zig-zag springs of the other webbing. Thus in Fig. 1 the pockets and zig-zag springs of the under webbing m run lengthwise of the spring and the pockets and zig-zag springs of the upper webbing In.
' run crosswise of the seat spring. It will be ap- .of the spiral springs even when the spring is sat upon beforethe hair has been put in place. Especially does the webbing cause the spiral springs to lose their identity so far as sensation is concerned when the two\ layers of webbing with intercrossed zig-zag runs are employed.
A convenient way of assembling the seat spring is indicated in Figs. 3 and Ll. The inner thrust rim wire is first assembled upon the spiral springs by banding the sameA to the top coils of the said 'spiral springs so that it can hinge with respect to the same. The inner rim can also hinge on its connections to the top coil of the spiral springs. The webbing (both layers if two layers are used)ris secured to the -outer rim wire y' be. fore that rim wire is assembled-on the scat spring. ,This fastening of the webbing to the'rim wire j is eiiected by the small band clips k. The outer rim wire and the webhing may then be laid Over the tops of the spiral springs and the inner rim wire and the band clips l pinched over the outer rim wire, the webbing and the oiset portions of the inner trussed rim wire.
