Specification of Letters-Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1916.
Application filed September 14, 1915. Serial No. 50,582.
in prior Patent No. 1,162,851 of E. H. Dew son, dated December 7, 1915, where the back pressure vent from the compressor crank chamber-instead of opening to the atmosphere directly is piped to the suction inlet of the compressor, so that only air purified by passing through a strainer can flow to the crank chamber. It has been found with 'this" construction that oil from the crank chamber passes over with the air either in the form ofvapor or oil particles and thus oil charged air enters the air cylinders of the compressor withthe suction air from the atmosphere, which is of course undesirable.
The principal object of my mvention 15 to provide a back pressure vent construction of the above character in which means are provided for preventing the passingof oil from the crank chamber to the suction inlet of the compressor. a
In the accompanying drawing, the single figure is a sectional viewshdwing the crank chamber of a fluid compressor with my improvement applied thereto.
According to the construction shown in the drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates the crank casing of a two cylinder fluid compressor having the crank chamber 2 containing the usual oil supply 3; Each cylinder 10 of the compressor contains the usual piston 11 having a connecting rod 12, and a suction inlet valve 13-supplies fluid from the atmosphere through an air strainer 14 to said piston. Between the cylinders 10, a cored passageway 4 leads from the crank chamber 2 to an oil chamber 5 which communicates through a Passage 6 with the crank chamber 2, so that oil will be supplied from the crank chamber to the oil chamber. From the oil chamber 5 a cored passageway 7 leads to a third cored passageway 8 WhlCh commumcates through a passage 9 with the suction inlet of the compressor.
The course of the air flow from the crank chamber is shown by the arrows, the air flowing through the passageway 4, which is preferably restricted in area so as to accelerate the movement of the air, and impinging on the oil in oil chamber 5, the oil in the air, whether in the form of vapor or drops is precipitated into the oil chamber.
The air is then sharply deflected and flows through the passageways 7, 8, and 9 to the suction inlet of the compressor.
It has been found by repeated experiment that this arrangement is very eflective in eliminating oil from the air which passes from the crank chamber.
Since the oil is connected to the oil in the crank chamber, the supply of oil will be constantly maintained, while the oil taken from the crank chamber air is continually returned to the source.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a fluid compressor having the back pressure vent from-the crank chamber connected to the suction inlet of the compressor, of means for preventing the passage of oil with the air flowing from the crank chamber to the suction inlet.
2. The combination with a fluid compressor having the back pressure vent from the crank chamber connected to the suction inlet of the compressor, of an oil chamber containing oil and means for directing the current of air flowing from the crank chamber against the oil in said chamber to thereby free the air from oil.
3. The combination with a fluid compressor having the back pressure vent from the sor having the back pressure vent from the crank chamber connected to the suction inlet of the compressor, of an oil chamber communicating with the oil supply in the crankchamber and a restricted passageway for.
directingthe flow of air from the crank chamber against the surface of oil in the w In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. v
