MAN, citizens ofithe United States, residing,
respectively at Downingtown, county of Chester, and State of Pennsylvania; Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Looms, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in looms, and more particularly to an improved driving mechanism for looms which imparts a direct drivingaction to the cams for operating the harness levers, and at the same time imparts a direct driving action to the other parts of the loom. V
Heretofore, in the construction of looms, it has been common to drive the cams from the loom or in other words, impart motion to the movable elements of the loom and take mechanism to drive the cams.
With our improvements, the cams are driven directly by the drive shaft, and the other features of the loom are driven directly by the drive shaft, so that there is no lost'motion, but on the other hand, an increased power and a more efficient operation. With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view partly in horlzontal section illustrating our improvements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. l

to any particular structure of loom, it isnot necessary to set forth the loom in detail, but to distinguish-the parts from each other we shall hereinafter refer to'the shaft 2 as the loom driven shaft,? and the shaft 5 as the drive shaft which imparts motion to the loom driven shaft and which also imparts motion to a cam shaft 6 located parallel therewith as will be hereinafter described.
On the cam shaft 6, a plurality of cams 10 are located, and all the cams are secured together by bolts 11 whichalso operate to secure a gear wheel 12 to the series of cams.
A pinion 13 on drive shaft 5 meshes with a gear 1 1 on a short shaft 15, the latter supported in frame 1 and having a pinion 16 thereon meshing with the gear wheel 12.
By reason of the train of gearing above described, the speed of cam shaft 6 is reduced and by varying the number and cliameter of such gears in the train, we are enabled to impart just the desired rotary movement to the. cams, and as this. moveoff power from some portlon of the loom ment will be steady, positive, and always uniform, we are enabled to produce better results than possible with a series of cams which are driven from the power take off from the loom mechanism as distinguished from a direct drive as above described.
The cams 1O operate harness levers 17 which are supported as shown at 18 on the frame, and as the particular construction of harness has nothing to do with this invention, it is not shown in detail.
'Hereinafter in the claims, we have referred to the loom and the cams as separate parts, and we would have it understood that by the use of the term loom, we include all such features of the loom as are not controlled by the cams, and while our invention is especially adapted for use in connection with velvet,plush, and other. similar cut pile fabrics, we would have it understood that we do not limit ourselves to the particular form of loom. 1 Various slight changes might be made i the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from our invention, and hence 'we do not limit ourselves to the precise details set forth,'- but consider ourselves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall with-' in the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention,
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a loom, of a cam shaft, a series of harness lever-operating cams on said cam shaft, a drive shaft, a loom driven shaft, means on the drive shaft operative to transmit motion to the loom driven shaft independently of said cams, and additional means on the drive shaft for transmitting motion to the cam shaft, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a loom, of a cam shaft, a series of harness lever-operating cams on said cam shaft, a drive shaft, a loom driven shaft, a gear on said loom driven shaft, a pinion on the drive shaft operative to drive said gear independently of said cams, and a train of gearing independent of said pinion for connecting the drive shaft with the cam shaft, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a loom, of a main drive shaft, a cam shaft, a series of harness lever-operating cams-on the cam shaft, a loom driven shaft, a train of gearing connecting the cam shaft and the drive shaft, and independent driving means connecting the main drive shaft and said loom driven shaft, substantially as described.
4;. The combination in a loom, of a main drive shaft, a cam shaft located substantially parallel With the drive shaft, agear on the cam shaft, a series of harness lever-opera ating cams on the cam shaft, an additional shaft having a pinion'and a gear thereon operative together, said pinion meshing with the gear on the cam shaft, and a pinion on the drive shaft meshing with the gear on said additional shaft, substantially as described. V
5. The combination in a loom, of a cam shaft, a series of harness lever-operating cams on the cam shaft, a drive shaft located adjacent the cam shaft, means on one portion of the drive shaft for taking power therefrom and transmitting 'it to said cam shaft, means for taking power from another portion of the drive shaft and transmitting the same to other portions ,of the loom, whereby the heddle operating cams and other portions of the loom are driven independently but directly from the drive shaft, substantially as described.
