Description
c. H. QUIGG. GUIDE FOR ROLLING MILLS. APPLICATIONLFILED DEC. I8. 1915- 1,205,932.- Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. QUIGG, OF CONSHOHOCKEN. PENNSYLVANIA.
I v GUIDE I IiOR ROLLING-MILLS.
To all whom z'zfmay concern: I
Be it known thatI, CHARLES H. QUIGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conshohocken, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Rolling-Mills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which.
it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in guides for rolling mills.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of guides for rolling mills for preventing the sheets of steel, iron or other material from wrapping around the rolls and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive device adapted to afford an increased amount of wear and thereby obviate the necessity of frequently reshaping, lengthening, and drawing the guides out by hand and capable of reversal to present each of the side edges of the removable head to the roller and of being readily removed when it is necessary to supply a new head to the guide.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion'and minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the. advantages of the invention.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of rolling mill guides constructed in accordance with this invention, and arranged in operative position with relation to the rolls, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the guides, the head being partially removed.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates the rolling mill guide constructed of suitable metal and consisting of a plate or body having a reduced rear portion 2 and provided at the end there- Specification of LetterslPatent.
' Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application filed December 18,1915. Serial No. 67,663.
of with depending flanges 3 and .4 spaced apart to provide a transverse recess to receive a supportingbar or member 5. The flanges 3 and 1 are-transversely disposed, the flange 3 being vertical and the flange 4: being arranged at an inclination and formed by an extension of the rear end of the reduced portion 2. The body of the guide is provided at its front end with an enlarged portion 6 located at the lower face of the body portion and forming a rib which is beveled at its front and rear side edges 7 and 8 to form a dove-tail rib to interlock a reversible head 9 extending across the front end of the plate or body 1 and provided in its upper face with a dove-tailed groove 10 conforming to the configuration of the dovetail rib 6 and adapted to be arranged on the same by sliding it transversely on the rib as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The head 9 which has a flat lower face 11 is set at an inclination and it is beveled at its upper face at each side of the groove 10 at 12 so as to present a front tapered portion when either of its side edges is arranged in front and in advance of the body portion of the guide. This provides a double wearing portion and the guides having the reversible heads will last twice as long as an ordinary guide without necessitating repair or replacing of the head.
When both of the side tapered portions of the reversible head are worn out, the head may be removed and a new head may be placed on the dove-tail rib. This will obviate the necessity of drawing out and reshaping the guide by hand.
The reversible head and the body are provided with registering perforations 13 and 14 for the reception of bolts 15 which securely fasten the head on the front portion of the body. The reversible heads rest upon the rollers 16 of a mill and they are adapted to prevent the material operated on by the rollers from wrapping around the latter.
What is claimed is:
1. A guide for rolling mills including a body provided with a reversible head located at the front end of the body and provided with tapered side portions and adapted to present either of the side portions to a roller. 4
2. A guide for rolling mills including a body portion and a reversible head set at an inclination at the front of the body portion and having tapered side portions and means enlargement worming a 'rib and "beveled at the front and rear edges and .a reversible head having a dove-tailed groove in its 1 upper face: receiving the sa-i'dribs, said head I being arranged-at :ELIllIlCllIliltlOIland having a"flatlo\ver"faee andb'eveled at its upper face at opposite sides of the said groove to provide 'front and rear tapered portions,
the head being reversible to present either of the tapered portions to a roll.
In testimony whereof I afiix mv signature 7 in presence of two Witnesses. v, ..,GI IARLES H. QUIGG.
