EN- nnno, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Villa Onskebo, Skarsatra, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Calculating-Machines, Cash-Registers, and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
In calculating machines, cash registers and the like it is of importance that the key mechanism, by means of which numbers are put together in the machine and transmitted to the operating parts of the same, is so constructed that it permits a quick work and to the greatest possible extent excludes the possibility of faults. Thesaid mechanism ought to be connected with means for the effecting of control as well in the machine itself as in the printing mechanism, if any, combined with th machine.
This invention relates to a key mechanism for calculatin machines, cash registers and the like which meets the reatest demands in the said respects.
A form of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing. in which Figure 1 is a front view of two keys with parts belonging to the same. The keys are located in two adjacent rows, one corresponding to even figures and the other to odd figures. Fig. 2 shows the same as Fig. l in a side view, artially in section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 to 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4- is a side view of a key row.
The form of the invention shown in the drawing is adapted for use in a calculating machine, in which the keys, when actuated, connect certain shafts of the machine with wheels operatin at the effecting of the calculating operation (in the present case transmitting wheels. which transmit motion to wheels registering the result). In the applying of the invention to calculating machines or cash registers of constructions different from that stated above suitable changes of meshing parts must evidently be made.
Each key consists, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of an upright arm 5 on the top end of which there is a button provided with a fig are. The arms 5 are swingably mounted on shafts 6 fixed in the frame of the machine. The shafts 6 are provided with pins 7, which at their free ends carry metal disks 8 Specification of Letters Patent.

which can swing around said pins. The metal disks 8 are connected by means of plates 9, which are provided with oblique grooves 10, into which the lower ends of the arms 5 Thus if a key is forced down, it is swung around the stationary shaft 6, the top part of the arm 5 being thus swung backward (Fig. in a slot 11 provided in the top plate of the casing. Owing to the fact that the lower end of the arm 5 meshes with the slot 10 of the transverse plate 9, the plates 8 as a whole are swung to one side or the other, dc iending on the direction in which the slot runs. The lower ends of the plates 8 are fork shaped and embrace the registoring-wheels 12, which can be moved longitudinally but can not rotate on shafts 13 rotatably mounted in the frame of the machine. Thus, when the keys are actuated and the plates 8 thus swung to the side in the manner described above, the registeringwheels 12 are also taken with the plates and it into engagement with the transmit- \llQGlS 1%., which transmit the motion to other parts of the machine.
The arms 5 are provided with horn-like projections 15, which extend backward to the side. In two adjacent rows of keys said projections extend in opposite directions (inward) from the two rows, so that they lie in a straight line running between the two rows of keys, as shown in Fig. 1. Between each pair of adjacent key rows a steel spring or the like 16 is provided, which is located on the shafts 6 and under the projections 15,
as shown in F 1. The said spring is fixed at ends and the length of the same is so adjusted that the spring allows one key at a time in each double row to be forced down, the projection 15 of the key forced down being thus lowered and forcing downward the spring, so that the latter is put under full tension, whereby the projections of the other keys are forced u} ward so that the keys last mentioned are brought into an upright position, 2'. 6., into the position shown in Fig. 2. Consequently the ob ject of the described arrangement is to pre vent the keys except one from being pushed back, and thus, the registering-wheels l2 exceptv one from being in engagement with a transmitting-Wheel 1%. As a key is actuated, it is moved backward and downward, a projection 17 on the top part of the keyarm being thereby brought into engagement with a catch 18, fixed to a spring fastened moved backward, first to the top plate of the casing, so is held in its rearmost position by the projection 17 engaged by the catch 18. As another key of the same double row is then actuated, its projection 15 forces down the spring 16, the tension of the spring being thereby so increased that the key previously moved backward is brought out of engagement with the catch 18 by the spring pressing against its projection 15 and returns to its original position.
To each group of registering-wheels located on each side of the transmitting-wheels correspond two register-sectors 21 and 22 (Pg. hi ch are rotatably mounted on a stationary shaft 23 in the frame. One sector is provided with even and the other with odd figures, and each sector is connected with a cylindrical piece 2%, around which is put a band 25 preferably of steel for the rotating ofthe sector in question. Pins 2 1 project from the cylinders and engage holes provided in the bands for preventing the bands from slipping. The said sectors are provided on their curved outer sides with figures. Thus, in the form of the invention shown in the drawing the upper sector 21 is provided with the figures 0, 2, i, 6, S and is actuated by the band 25, which is laid over keys with the even figures. The lower sector 22 is provided with the figures 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and connected with the band 25 which is laid over keys with the odd figures. The said bands are located between projections 26 on the keys, and on the bands pins 27 (Figs. 2 and M are provided which are acted upon by the projections 26 of the keys when the latter are moved backward, so that also the bands are drawn backward for a distance and the sectors 21 and 22 respectively rotated, until the figure of the same, corresponding to the actuated key is placed opposite an opening 28 (Fig. 4.) provided in the top plate of the casing. The pins 27 of the bands are so located that they are moved forward for such a distance, as the keys respectively are pushed backward, that the figure corresponding to the key is located opposite to the opening 28. For this purpose the pin 27, which corresponds to the key provided with the figure 1, is located at a short distance from said key when in its position of rest, so that the key, as it is passes freely in the opening 11 for a certain distance, before it comes into contact with the corresponding pin 27, as seen from the right hand side of Fig. 4:, since the rotating of the sector for only a short distance is sufficient for locating the figure 1 opposite the opening 28. The uppermost pin 27 (farthest to the left in Fig. 4t) on the other hand is in contact with the key when in its position of rest, owing to the fact that it must move forward the band 25 for such a distance, that the sector that the key 22 is so rotated that the figure 9 of the same is located opposite the opening 28. Consequently, owing to the sail arrangement the number can be read off in the opening 28 which has been registered in the machine by forcing certain keys backward, and one can thus ascertain whether the required number has been correctly registered.
If the machine is provided with a print ing mechanism the opposite parts of the steel bands 25 are laid around rolls 50, connected with members, which transmit the motion to the printing mechanism. Consequently, as a key is acted upon, the following operations'are effected: 1. Connection with the'motion transmitting member (for instance registering wheels 12), which belongs to the actuated key. 2. Returning of keys previously forced downward and disconnecting of motion transmitting members belonging to the same. 3. Placing opposite the openings 28 of the number registered in the machine. 1. Registering in the printing mechanism of the number registered in the machine, if a printing mechanism is provided.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a key mechanism for calculating machines, cash registers and the like, the combination of a series of groups of devices, each group comprising a pair of fulcrumed arms each provided with an inner projection; a pair of members pivoted for movement transverse to that of the arms and provided with a plate having oppositely inclined slots, each slot receiving one of said projections; a pair of register actuating shafts; a register actuating wheel slidable on each shaft and adapted to he slid by engagement by one of said members; and a transmitting wheel adapted to be engaged by either one of said registering wheels.
2. In a key mechanism for calculating machines, cash registers and the like, the combination of a series of pairs of fulcrumed arms, each arm having an inner projection; a plurality of pivoted members, each member having a plate having an inclined slot engaged by one of said projections, the slots receiving the projection of each pair of arms being inclined in opposite directions; a pair of register actuating wheels associated with each pair of arms, each wheel adapted to be engaged for sliding movement by one of said devices; and a transmitting wheel adapted to be engaged each by one of the register actuating wheels associated with each pair of arms. 7
3. In a key mechanism for calculating machines, cash registers and the like, the combination of a series of shafts; a series of pairs of arms fulcrumed on said shafts respectively, one pair to each shaft, each arm having a projection at its inner end; a pair of disks associated with each arm and pivoted to the shaft on which the arm is fulcrumed, and adapted to have their pivotal movement transverse to that of the arm, and having bifurcated ends; a plate connecting each pair of disks and provided with an inclined slot receiving the projection of the arm with which such dis is are associated, the slots receiving the projections of each pair of arms being inclined in opposite directions; register actuating shafts; register actuating wheels each slidably mounted on one of said shafts and held against rotation relative thereto and each received by one of said bifurcated ends; and transmitting wheels, one associated with each pair of wheels associated with each pair of arms and adapted to engage either of such wheels.
In a key mechanism for calculating machines, cash registers and the like, the con'ibination of a series of parallel shafts, a series of pairs of arms fulcrumed 011 said shafts, one pair to each shaft, each arm having a projection at its inner end, a he 1 on its outer end, and its middle part formed into a boss encircling the shaft and having a curved slot lying in a plane perpendicular to the shaft; a pin passing through each slot and the shaft; disks pivoted one on each end of each pin and each having a bifurcated end; a plate rigidly connecting in pairs the dis s of each pin and each provided with an (pie slot receiving one of said projections, the slots of the plates receiving the projections of the arms of each pair being inclined in opposite directions; register actuating shafts; pairs of register actuating wheels, each wheel slidably mounted on one of said shafts respectively and held against rotation relative thereto and received each by the bifurcated ends of the disks asso ciated with one of said arms; and a transmitting wheel associated with each pair of arms and adapted to be engaged by either of the register actuating wheels associated therewith.
5. In a key mechanism for calculating machines, cash registers and the like, the combination of a plurality of shafts ar ranged in a series; a pair of arms mounted on each of said shafts, and each provided with key on the outer end, a slotted boss at the middle part and a projection at its inner end; pins passing respectively through each slotted boss and said shafts and holding the pins against longitudinal movement and in a pair of series, but permitting pivotal movement of the keys on the shafts; a disk pivoted on each end of each of said pins and provided with a bifurcated end; a connecting plate rigidly connecting in pairs the disks of each pin and provided with an inclined slot receiving one of said projections of said arms, the slots of the plates receiving the projections of the same pair of arms being inclined in opposite directions; register actuating shafts; register actuating wheels slidably mounted on said shafts respectively and held against rotation relative thereto and received between the bifurcations of each pair of disks; and transmitting wheels with which said register actuating wheels are adapted to engage.
6. In a key mechanism for calculating machines. cash registers and the like, the combination of a pair of series of fulcrumed key-arms each provided with outwardly laterally spaced projections; a pivotally mounted sector provided with figures thereon at the same end of each series; a cylindrical piece secured to each sector; a roller at the end of each series remote from said sectors: flexible members passing between the projections of said arms and each passed about one of said rollers and pieces; stops placed at different points along said members and adapted to be engaged by said projections; and registering and transmitting means controlled by said arms.
7. In a key mechanism for calculating machine's. cash registers and the like, the combination of a pair of series of fulcrumed key-arms each provided with outwardly laterally spaced projections; a pivotally mounted sector provided with figures thereon at the same end of each series; a cylindrical piece secured to each sector; a roller at the end of each series remote from said sectors: flexible members passing between the projections of said arms and each passed about one of said rollers and pieces; stops placed at different points along said members and adapted to be engaged by said projections; and register actuating and transmitting means controlled by said arms; said stops each being disposed on the band a different distance from the normal position of the adjacent projection.
8. In a key mechanism for calculating machines, cash registers and the like, the combination of a pair of series of fulcrumed key arms each provided with outwardly laterally spaced projections; a pivotally mounted sector pro ided with figures thereon at the same end of each sector; a cylindrical piece secured to each sector; a roller at the end of each series remote from said sectors; flexible members passing between the projections of said arms and each passed about one of said rollers and pieces; stops placed at different points along said members and adapted to be engaged by said projections; and register actuating and transmitting means controlled by said arms.
