Definitions

  • My invention relates to wheeled implements in general, but more particularly to wheeled plows, and especially those in which the plow is supported by one or more bails, the said bail or bails being in turn mounted on a frame carried by the wheels.
  • the object of my invention is to provide a novel and eilicient wheeled implement of the foregoing general character.
  • a special object is to provide a wheeled implement having a depth regulating mechanism whereby no provisions for adjustment of the front and rear wheels are necessary, the regulation of the depth, as well as the leveling of the plow, being controlled entirely by a single hand lever, and the said lever forming medium of connection between a foot lift mechanism and the plow or other working element.
  • Another object is to provide a novel mechanism for causing the plowv to enter and leave the ground point first, adapted to permit the rear end of the plow to rise and prevent breakage when the plow point strikes an obstruction, and forming a rear connection between the plow beam and frame.
  • Another object is to provide a stop device for preventing the plow from ⁇ iolting up and down when in the ground and under pressure.
  • a further object is to provide an adjustable connection between the tongue and the front furrow wheel, whereby the position of the tongue relative to the said wheel can be changed when necessary, or maintained at the proper angle, as circumstances may require.

  • my invention comprises a body frame r1 supported horizontally by the front and rear furrow wheels B and C, ,and by the land-side wheel D.
  • the plow E has a beam c carried on the bail F which is mounted to turn in bearings 7 and f1 on the frame.
  • the foot lift mechanism comprises a lifting lever G and a depressing lever g rigidly connected together in the manner shown in Fig. 7, and held thus by a bolt g1 extending from one to the other through the sleeve g2 that turns in the top of the bearing bracket f1 on the frame.
  • the said bracket is formed with a shoulder Q3 and a notch g4, adapted to be engaged by a spring catch g5 on the lever g, whereby the plow is locked down when the lever is as shown in Fig. 7, or up when the levers swing back and the catch engages the notch g4.
  • the arm g" is rigid with the lever g, and is connected by a link g7 with the arm g8, which latter is rigid with a sleeve gf) on the straight outer portion f2 of the bail.
  • One feature of my invention comprises the arm g1 which is rigid with the sleeve 99 and which is provided with a set screw g for engaging the stop 912 of the bearing bracket f1 on the frame.
  • the set screw f/u takes up the or looseness, so to speak, and prevents the plow from jumping up and down. lhen the plow' is down as shown in Fig. 7, the pivotal joints 913, Q14 and g15 are in line, and with the joint 014 thus on center, the plow is held down, and the weight of the plow is on the set screw g, instead of on the link Q7, when the said screw is properly adjusted..
  • the pressure against the stop g1g relieves the strain on the foot lift mechanism, when the plow is' in the ground.
  • the screw g1 on the link (/7 engages a stop ,(/17 on the'arm gs, to limit the movement of the joint g1* toward the rear of the plow.
  • a further feature of my invention comprises the curved rack arrangement I which is rigid with the sleeve gg, which latter is loose on the bail portion f2, and a spring catch 1I on the lever H, said catch being controlled by the usual means on the upper end of said lever.
  • the lever H can be set in different positions relative to the rack I, and this changes the angle of the bail F relative to the arm g8, permitting the plow to assume a higher or lower working position.
  • the depth of the furrow is regulated, and asl the operation of said lever yH serves also to vary the angle of the aXle arm h2, an arrangement of this charactei' serves also for leveling the plow. If the depth is not right, when lever H reaches the l limit of the rack in either direction, then a further adjustment for this purpose is obtained by the holes tl .and bolt ha, in the manner previously explained.
  • the means for supporting the rear end of the plow, and for causing the plow to enter and leave the ground point first constitutes an additional feature of my invention.
  • This comprises the member or socalled bail J pivoted tov the lower ends of the brackets j, Vto swing up and down at its upper end.
  • the bracket jl on the plow beam is connected by the link y'2 with the upper end of said member J, in the manner shown.
  • the relative arrangement and proportions are such that the member J never reaches a horizontal position, but always stands at an angle. This is further insured by the stop l7'3 on the frame, upon which stop the member J rests when down, being provided with a lateral projection J1 for engaging said stop.
  • the link ,7'2 has a projection l7'4 at its upper end, which at times will engage the stop j on the member J, as shown'in dotted linesv in Fig. 5, to limit the upward movement of the rear end of the plow, when it tilts in this direction, as in entering hard ground.
  • the front and rear wheels B and C have their stems or standards connected by a rod K, in the usual way, whereby the tongue L controls the rear caster wheel C as well as the said front wheel.
  • the said rod is secured to a crank arm c on the upper end of the stem or standard o1 of the rear wheel, and the front end of said rod is arranged to slide in the slot in the arm cl fixed on the upper end of the stem b of the front wheel.
  • This sliding movement of the end of the rod in the slot 7o is in opposition to the spring 7a2, in the usual manner, and o ndly occurs when the tongue swings to one s1 e.V
  • Another feature of my invention comprises1 the curved rack 7c3, adapted to be engaged at different points bythe spring catch 704, and rigid with the sleeve 765 on the stem 72 of the front wheel.
  • Said sleeve 7:5 is not fastened to the stem o, but is free to turn thereon.
  • the tongue L is connected by a horizontal bolt 7c with the arm 7c which rigidly connects or unites the rack 7c3 with the sleeve 705, whereby the latter must turn when the tongue swings sidewise, although the tongue can swing up and down.
  • the arm 701, being locked to the rack 7c3 bythe catch 714, must also turn when the tongue swings sidewise, and hence the front wheel turns to right and left with the tongue.
  • the angle of the tongue, relative to the wheel B, can be changed at will, by releasing the catch 716%, and in this way the front wheel can be positioned to suit the requirements.
  • the rear wheel is held against movement to right or left while the plow is traveling straight ahead, but the side swing of the tongue releases the rear wheel, to a certain extent, because of the angular position of the slot 7c when the tongue is swung to one side.
  • the wheels B and C can, have the same or different angles, and the front wheel can be turned to either side, while the tongue remains straight; or, if necessary, the tongue can be swung to one side without disturbing the position of the wheels.
  • the said tongue is fixed to the member 748, which latter engages the bolt 706, and the adjustment is obtained without disturbing the connection between the said member 768 and the tongue.
  • the draft pin or bolt 7c is always at right angles to the tongue, or at some fixed angle thereto.
  • Suitable provisions e1 are made at the end of the beam e for the draft, the plow being what is ordinarily known as a single bail plow, there being no bail for the front end of the beam.
  • a spring N connects the frame with the bail E, thereby assisting in lifting the plow, and the drivers seat O is in the usual position.
  • the arm 7L2 is provided with a hand lever M
  • the lever H is provided with a rack my, said lever M having a catch m1 for engaging said rack. This takes the place of the arm 7L, holes 701 and bolt 71,3 (previously described),
  • the said rack has three notches m2 which correspond to the said three holes h1, and which afford intermediate and extreme up and down positions for the bail portion f1, relative to the landside wheel.
  • the hand lever M can be employed for controlling the landside wheel independently of the bail and plow, whenever this is found necessary or desirable.
  • the lever H is suiiicient for all purposes and the lever M is provided merely to satisfy the requirements in exceptional cases.
  • the hand lever H is not only a depth regulating lever, of course, but is also a leveling device as well, inasmuch as the body frame is supported at a fixed height on the front and rear furrow wheels, and whatever leveling action takes place is accomplished bythe control exercised by said hand lever over the land-side wheel.
  • the land-side wheel rises relative to the frame, and when the plow is set for a shallow furrow the said wheel takes a position lower down relative to said frame.
  • the level condition of the bottom of the furrow does not necessarily result from merely keeping the wheeled frame level, and is dependent upon a coperation of the bail and the offset axle, as well as the action of the rear supporting mechanism for the plow-beam.
  • the hand lever H is something more than a depth regulating' lever. inasmuch as the frame A is supported at a fixed height on the wheels B and C, whereby the said hand lever must also control the bail and offset axle in a manner to insure a level furrow bottom for all depth adjustments of the plow.
  • the keeping of the bottom of the furrow level is something that depends upon the proper coperation of the bail and offset axle and rear swinging support for the plowbeam; for, in order to keep the cutting edge of the plow in a horizontal plane, at any desired depth, and with diderent degrees of suck for the plow, it is necessary that the tilting of the frame about a longitudinal axis be controlled in the right manner, andy that the tilting of the plow about a transverse axis be also controlled for the purpose of keeping the cutting edge of the plowshare in a horizontal plane.
  • these elements are desirably so arranged lthat they coperate to keep the plow level, thereby insuring a level bottom for the furrow regardless of the depth thereof, and thus the hand lever H is employed for rocking the bail and axle to vary the depth in a wheeled plow which, because it has no special or separate hand lever or other device for leveling purposes, is practically self leveling in character; for, with the construction shown and described, there is no adjustment of the plow, other than the rocking of the front bail to vary the depth, which might tend to disturb the level condition of the plow-bottom, and it follows that whatever leveling is done must be accomplished by the said hand lever H as something incidental to its primary function of regulating the depth.
  • the wheel D In order to plow deeper, the wheel D must move upward relative to the furrow, and to plow a more shallow furrow the said wheel must move downward relative to said frame, which is necessary in addition to the up and down adjustment of the beam in the frame, as the plow bottom must always be level with the bottom of the front and rear furrow wheels, and the land wheel must always travel on the high or unplowed ground.
  • the element F is commonly termed a bail,4

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application led September 18, 1913. Serial No. 790,487.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALVARO S. Kno'rz, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Janesville, Rock county, Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in l/Vheeled Implements of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wheeled implements in general, but more particularly to wheeled plows, and especially those in which the plow is supported by one or more bails, the said bail or bails being in turn mounted on a frame carried by the wheels.
Generally stated, the object of my invention is to provide a novel and eilicient wheeled implement of the foregoing general character.
A special object is to provide a wheeled implement having a depth regulating mechanism whereby no provisions for adjustment of the front and rear wheels are necessary, the regulation of the depth, as well as the leveling of the plow, being controlled entirely by a single hand lever, and the said lever forming medium of connection between a foot lift mechanism and the plow or other working element.
Another object is to provide a novel mechanism for causing the plowv to enter and leave the ground point first, adapted to permit the rear end of the plow to rise and prevent breakage when the plow point strikes an obstruction, and forming a rear connection between the plow beam and frame.
Another object is to provide a stop device for preventing the plow from `iolting up and down when in the ground and under pressure.
A further object is to provide an adjustable connection between the tongue and the front furrow wheel, whereby the position of the tongue relative to the said wheel can be changed when necessary, or maintained at the proper angle, as circumstances may require.
To these and other useful ends my invention-consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of a wheeled plow embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section on line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective of the adjustable tongue connection which forms one feature of my invention. Fig. 4 is a landside elevation of the said plow, showing the land-side wheel removed for convenience of illustration, but dotted in to show the position thereof during operation of said plow. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line 55 in Fig. l, showing the plow leaving the ground, (in full lines) and indicating in dotted lines the position of the plow when it strikes an obstruction, or when it enters the ground. Fig. 6 is a detail section on line 6-6 in Fig. 8. Fig. 7 is a similar section on line 7 7 in Fig. 8. Fig. 8 is an enlarged rear elevation'of the raising and lowering means, and also the depth regulating mechanism shown in Fig. 1, showing a portion of the land-side wheel. Fig. 9 is a detail section on line 9-9 in Fig. 8*. Fig. 10 isa detail section on line 10-10 in Fig. 7 Fig. 11 is a detail section on line 11-11 in Fig. 6. Fig. 12 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but showing the plo-w raised out of the ground. Fig. 13 is a view similar to Fig. 8, but showing another form of my invention. Fig. 14 is a section on line 14?-14 in Fig. 13. Fig. 15 is a section on line 15-15 in Fig. 14.
As thus illustrated, my invention comprises a body frame r1 supported horizontally by the front and rear furrow wheels B and C, ,and by the land-side wheel D. The plow E has a beam c carried on the bail F which is mounted to turn in bearings 7 and f1 on the frame.
The foot lift mechanism comprises a lifting lever G and a depressing lever g rigidly connected together in the manner shown in Fig. 7, and held thus by a bolt g1 extending from one to the other through the sleeve g2 that turns in the top of the bearing bracket f1 on the frame. The said bracket is formed with a shoulder Q3 and a notch g4, adapted to be engaged by a spring catch g5 on the lever g, whereby the plow is locked down when the lever is as shown in Fig. 7, or up when the levers swing back and the catch engages the notch g4. The arm g" is rigid with the lever g, and is connected by a link g7 with the arm g8, which latter is rigid with a sleeve gf) on the straight outer portion f2 of the bail.
One feature of my invention comprises the arm g1 which is rigid with the sleeve 99 and which is provided with a set screw g for engaging the stop 912 of the bearing bracket f1 on the frame. By this construc tion the downward movement of the arm gs is limited, and the weight of the plow, when down, is not on the link 97, but on the frame. In this way the foot lift mechanism is relieved of the strain. In other words, the
plow is held at a iXed depth, and does not ride out in hard spots, even though the connections involving the link g7 are more or less loose. The set screw f/u takes up the or looseness, so to speak, and prevents the plow from jumping up and down. lhen the plow' is down as shown in Fig. 7, the pivotal joints 913, Q14 and g15 are in line, and with the joint 014 thus on center, the plow is held down, and the weight of the plow is on the set screw g, instead of on the link Q7, when the said screw is properly adjusted.. Thus the pressure against the stop g1g relieves the strain on the foot lift mechanism, when the plow is' in the ground. The screw g1 on the link (/7 engages a stop ,(/17 on the'arm gs, to limit the movement of the joint g1* toward the rear of the plow.
Another feature of my invention cour prises the hand lever H which 'is rigidly keyed to the bail portion f2 (see Figs. S and 9) and which is provided with a short ai'm it having three bolt holes 71.1. The arm h2 is loose on the portion f2, but is connected rigidly with the arm L by a bolt 7b3 inserted through the middle one of said holes h1. The offset aXle (l is rigid with said arm h2, and supports the land-side wheel D. For ordinary purposes this adjustment of the joints is employed; but extreme positions of the plow up and down may be obtained by shifting the bolt h3 to one of the other holes, and for unusually deep plowing the bolt will be set in theuppermost hole k1 and for unusually shallow plowing, in the lowermost hole. yThus the hand lever H is available for assisting the lever G in raising the plow out of the ground, and the adjustable ccnnection between this lever and the offset axle of the land-side wheel permits the plow to operate at different depths. But in each case the lever G has the same throw or range of movement.
A further feature of my invention comprises the curved rack arrangement I which is rigid with the sleeve gg, which latter is loose on the bail portion f2, and a spring catch 1I on the lever H, said catch being controlled by the usual means on the upper end of said lever. Thus the lever H can be set in different positions relative to the rack I, and this changes the angle of the bail F relative to the arm g8, permitting the plow to assume a higher or lower working position. In this way the depth of the furrow is regulated, and asl the operation of said lever yH serves also to vary the angle of the aXle arm h2, an arrangement of this charactei' serves also for leveling the plow. If the depth is not right, when lever H reaches the l limit of the rack in either direction, then a further adjustment for this purpose is obtained by the holes tl .and bolt ha, in the manner previously explained.
The means for supporting the rear end of the plow, and for causing the plow to enter and leave the ground point first, constitutes an additional feature of my invention. This comprises the member or socalled bail J pivoted tov the lower ends of the brackets j, Vto swing up and down at its upper end. The bracket jl on the plow beam is connected by the link y'2 with the upper end of said member J, in the manner shown. Preferably the relative arrangement and proportions are such that the member J never reaches a horizontal position, but always stands at an angle. This is further insured by the stop l7'3 on the frame, upon which stop the member J rests when down, being provided with a lateral projection J1 for engaging said stop. By this provision the downward motion of the member J is caused to cease a little before the bail F reaches its lower position for normal depth. lf the plow is then lowered to a' greater depth, it will be tilted forward with its point downward. When the plow starts to rise, the link jg swings backward a distance before reaching a 'position which causes the member J torise, the two elements being relatively formed for this purpose. This enables the plow point to tilt upward, so that the plow comes out of the ground point first, as shown in Fig. 5. As the lifting movement of the plow continues, by downward movement of the lever G, the member J is forced upward and' into the position shown in Fig. 12. Preferably, the link ,7'2 has a projection l7'4 at its upper end, which at times will engage the stop j on the member J, as shown'in dotted linesv in Fig. 5, to limit the upward movement of the rear end of the plow, when it tilts in this direction, as in entering hard ground.
The front and rear wheels B and C have their stems or standards connected by a rod K, in the usual way, whereby the tongue L controls the rear caster wheel C as well as the said front wheel. rFor this purpose the said rod is secured to a crank arm c on the upper end of the stem or standard o1 of the rear wheel, and the front end of said rod is arranged to slide in the slot in the arm cl fixed on the upper end of the stem b of the front wheel. This sliding movement of the end of the rod in the slot 7o is in opposition to the spring 7a2, in the usual manner, and o ndly occurs when the tongue swings to one s1 e.V
Another feature of my invention comprises1 the curved rack 7c3, adapted to be engaged at different points bythe spring catch 704, and rigid with the sleeve 765 on the stem 72 of the front wheel. Said sleeve 7:5 is not fastened to the stem o, but is free to turn thereon. The tongue L is connected by a horizontal bolt 7c with the arm 7c which rigidly connects or unites the rack 7c3 with the sleeve 705, whereby the latter must turn when the tongue swings sidewise, although the tongue can swing up and down. The arm 701, being locked to the rack 7c3 bythe catch 714, must also turn when the tongue swings sidewise, and hence the front wheel turns to right and left with the tongue. The angle of the tongue, relative to the wheel B, can be changed at will, by releasing the catch 716%, and in this way the front wheel can be positioned to suit the requirements. The rear wheel is held against movement to right or left while the plow is traveling straight ahead, but the side swing of the tongue releases the rear wheel, to a certain extent, because of the angular position of the slot 7c when the tongue is swung to one side. Thus the wheels B and C can, have the same or different angles, and the front wheel can be turned to either side, while the tongue remains straight; or, if necessary, the tongue can be swung to one side without disturbing the position of the wheels. The said tongue, however, is fixed to the member 748, which latter engages the bolt 706, and the adjustment is obtained without disturbing the connection between the said member 768 and the tongue. Thus the draft pin or bolt 7c is always at right angles to the tongue, or at some fixed angle thereto.
Suitable provisions e1 are made at the end of the beam e for the draft, the plow being what is ordinarily known as a single bail plow, there being no bail for the front end of the beam. Also, and in the usual manner, a spring N connects the frame with the bail E, thereby assisting in lifting the plow, and the drivers seat O is in the usual position. As shown in Figs. 13, l-t and 15, the construction is substantially the same as that previously described. In this case, however, the arm 7L2 is provided with a hand lever M, and the lever H (previously described) is provided with a rack my, said lever M having a catch m1 for engaging said rack. This takes the place of the arm 7L, holes 701 and bolt 71,3 (previously described),
and in addition enables the operator to change the angle of the arm 71,2 while the plow is in operation. The said rack has three notches m2 which correspond to the said three holes h1, and which afford intermediate and extreme up and down positions for the bail portion f1, relative to the landside wheel. In other words, the hand lever M can be employed for controlling the landside wheel independently of the bail and plow, whenever this is found necessary or desirable. Ordinarily, however, the lever H is suiiicient for all purposes and the lever M is provided merely to satisfy the requirements in exceptional cases.
The hand lever H is not only a depth regulating lever, of course, but is also a leveling device as well, inasmuch as the body frame is supported at a fixed height on the front and rear furrow wheels, and whatever leveling action takes place is accomplished bythe control exercised by said hand lever over the land-side wheel. When the plow is set at a lower depth the land-side wheel rises relative to the frame, and when the plow is set for a shallow furrow the said wheel takes a position lower down relative to said frame. This, of course, tends to keep the frame level, and to that extent the wheeled plow is in one sense self-leveling, inasmuch as the leveling action is not dependent upon a separate operation, but to the contrary is included in the raising and lowering of the plow by the rocking of the front bail thereof.
With further respect to the arrangement whereby the bottom of the furrow is kept level, it will be understood, of course, that merely keeping the frame level does not, in a wheeled implement of this character, necessarily mean that the bottom of the furrow will be level. Whether the bottom ofthe furrow is level, depends, of course, upon whether the cutting edge of the plowshare is maintained in a horizontal plane. Referring to Fig. l, and as is well known, this cutting edge extends obliquely to the line of travel, when the plow is viewed from above, and it follows that a tilting of the plow beam onV the bail will so change the position of this cutting edge that the furrow is no longer level. As stated, therefore, the level condition of the bottom of the furrow does not necessarily result from merely keeping the wheeled frame level, and is dependent upon a coperation of the bail and the offset axle, as well as the action of the rear supporting mechanism for the plow-beam. llith the herein shown and described construction, and as previously stated, the hand lever H is something more than a depth regulating' lever. inasmuch as the frame A is supported at a fixed height on the wheels B and C, whereby the said hand lever must also control the bail and offset axle in a manner to insure a level furrow bottom for all depth adjustments of the plow. It is also true, for the reasons previously given, that the rear support .l and its link jg contribute to the leveling of the plow to insure a level bottom for the furrow, inasmuch as this is something that is dependent to some extent upon the position of the plow-beam on the bail F; for while the offset axle might keep the frame level during up and down adjustment of the plow to vary the Vsa tom of the furrow was not level because ofy the tilted position of the plow-beam on the bail-that is to say, because of therfact that the cutting edge of the plowshare was not traveling in a horizontal plane. As stated, therefore, the keeping of the bottom of the furrow level is something that depends upon the proper coperation of the bail and offset axle and rear swinging support for the plowbeam; for, in order to keep the cutting edge of the plow in a horizontal plane, at any desired depth, and with diderent degrees of suck for the plow, it is necessary that the tilting of the frame about a longitudinal axis be controlled in the right manner, andy that the tilting of the plow about a transverse axis be also controlled for the purpose of keeping the cutting edge of the plowshare in a horizontal plane. l.Vith the construction shown and described, these elements are desirably so arranged lthat they coperate to keep the plow level, thereby insuring a level bottom for the furrow regardless of the depth thereof, and thus the hand lever H is employed for rocking the bail and axle to vary the depth in a wheeled plow which, because it has no special or separate hand lever or other device for leveling purposes, is practically self leveling in character; for, with the construction shown and described, there is no adjustment of the plow, other than the rocking of the front bail to vary the depth, which might tend to disturb the level condition of the plow-bottom, and it follows that whatever leveling is done must be accomplished by the said hand lever H as something incidental to its primary function of regulating the depth.
In order to plow deeper, the wheel D must move upward relative to the furrow, and to plow a more shallow furrow the said wheel must move downward relative to said frame, which is necessary in addition to the up and down adjustment of the beam in the frame, as the plow bottom must always be level with the bottom of the front and rear furrow wheels, and the land wheel must always travel on the high or unplowed ground.
The element F is commonly termed a bail,4
but in effect it is a rock shaftor crank shaft, and hence a crank shaft of any suitable character can be employed for this purpose.
F or the broader purpose of my invention, I do not limit myself to any particular form of plow, nor to any particular number of bails for the plow beam. These are things that can be changed or modified without departing from the spirit of my invention, Also, l do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described.
