Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 1, 1914. Serial No. 848,463.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLEs G. J- HANNESMEYER and GEORGE LANGEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Oakley, Hamilton county, Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal- Planers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to metal planers and the objects of our improvements are to provide change speed connections with the feed screw for moving the rail head at difi'erent speeds in either of opposite directions. To provide a slip clutch which will automatically disengage under predetermined resistance for preventing injury caused by the rail head contacting with an obstruction: to provide intermittent feeding connections with continuous rapid return of the rail head in either of opposite directions, and to provide durable construction and compact assemblage of the various parts for securing facility of operation and efficiency of action. These objects may be attained in the following described manner as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a plan with parts broken away of a metal planer embodying our improvements, Fig. 2, a side elevation looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the trigger gear; Fig. 4 an end elevation of said gear with parts in section on the line wo: of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 a transverse section of the hand lever through the detent plunger therein.
In the drawings 1 represents the housing of a metal planer, 2, the cross rail adjustable thereon, 3, the head movable on the cross rail for carrying the tool and provided with nut 4 for the feed screw 5, all being constructed and-arranged in the ordinary manner.
The vertical drivin shaft 6 journaled in bearing 7 carries a miter gear 8 in continuous engagement with similar gears 9 and 11.
v Said latter gears turn on shaft 12 which is journaled in bearings 13 and 14 and are formed with friction clutch members 15 and 16' on their adjacent ends. Said clutch members consists of beveled radial teeth or serrations 17, and a double clutch member 18 with similar teeth is splined on shaft 12 for cooperating therewith and becoming automatically disengaged therefrom under an excess of resistance.
A shifting yoke 19 pivoted at a fixed point and provided with a hand lever 20 serves to move member 18 into alternate engagement with the members 15 and 16 for turning shaft 12 in either of opposite directions. A spring actuated detent 21 on said lever adapted to automatically engage with the notch 30 formed in the casing serves to maintain it with the member 18 in a neutral position under a yielding pressure as shown Intermediate gears 22, 23, and 24 are of diflerent size and gears 22 and 24 are connected together to turn in, unison on the fixed'stud 25 and pinion 26 on shaft 12 engages with intermediate loose gear 23 for driving the loose pinion 27 on the feed screw 5 and which is formed on one end with a clutch member 28.
A shaft 29 journaled in fixed bearings is provided on one end with pinion 31 in continuous engagement with rack 32 which may be reciprocated in the usual manner. A pinion 33 on the opposite end of shaft 29 engages with the intermediate loose gear 22 for communicating intermittent motion through 80 gear 24 to the usual trigger gear 34 which is formed with internal ratchet notches 36 and mounted to turn on collar 39. Said collar is free to turn on the feed screw 5 and is formed with a clutchmember 35 on one end 5 and with a recess 47 in its'side. A pawl 37 mounted within said recess on the pin 48 may be turned by means of the handle 49 with its ends alternately into engagement with the ratchet notches 36 for actuating the collar intermittently in the usual manner in either of the opposite directions in which the gear 34 may be turned. A movable plate 51 held in contact with the heel of the pawl by means of the spring 52 serves to maintain the pawl in engagement with the ratchet notches under a yielding pressure. The double clutch member 41 splined on the feed screw may be alternately engaged with clutch . members 28 and 35 as desired' by 100 means of the handle 42 with the eccentric shoe 43 thereon being in movable engagement with said member 41.
In operation, the loose gears 9 and 11 on shaft 12 may be continuously driven in re- 105 spective op osite directions from shaft 6 by means of t e engagement therewith of gear 8 on said shaft. By means of the hand lever 20 the double clutch member 18 maybe alternately engaged with the clutch members 110 15 and 16 for driving the shaft 12 with pinion 26 thereon, intermediate loose gear 23 and loose pinion 27 on the feed screw in either of opposite directions at constant speed. The reciprocating rack engaging with the pinion 31 on shaft 29 serves to rotate pinion 33 thereon, connected loose gears 22 and 24 on stud and the trigger gear 34. By means of the engagement of the clutch members 41 and 35 and also of the reversible pawl 37 with the gear 34: the collar 39 together with the feed screw may be intermittently rotated in either of opposite directions for feeding the tool head along the cross rail. The amount of this feeding movement of the head may be regulated by the distance of movement of the rack in the usual manner. The return movement of the head on the rail is effected by holding the corresponding clutch members on shaft 12 in engagement by means of the hand lever 20. I
Should the head in its return movement strike an obstruction the excess of resistance thus imparted to said clutch members will overcome the operators pressure on the hand lever and automatically disengage them to prevent injury to the connected parts.
Having fully described our improvements what We claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,
In a metal planer, the combination of a constantly driven shaft, an intermittently driven shaft, a feed screw, independent gear connections each including a clutch from said shafts therewith, a reversible pawl and ratchet mechanism for driving the screw in either of opposite directions from the latter shaft, and reversing gear connections including a clutch from the former shaft With the screw.
