Description

ADDISON V.,SANFQR'D.
improvement in Sash Holders. N0. 120,540. x Pafented Oct. 3I,1871.-
UNITED STATS OFFICE.
ADDISON V. SANFORD, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM F. POPE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,540, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDISON V. SANFORD, of Binghamton in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Stops and Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents an inside face view of my improved sash-stop and lock with the bolt in its locking-position; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the bolt as drawn back; and Fig. 3, a back-edge view of said sash-stop and lock.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts throughout the several figures.
My invention relates to that kind of sashstop and lock which is operated by the thumb and finger with an action like that of working a pair of pinchers; and it consists in a novel construction of the bolt, and novel arrangement of the movable thumb or finger-piece in such a sash-stop or look, whereby the parts are enabled to be more perfectly inclosed within a case.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the case of the sash-stop and lock, provided with a fixed finger-piece, b, for use in concert with a thumb-piece, c, of the lever, by which the bolt is operated or drawn back, through pressure of the thumb and finger applied to said pieces, after the manner of operating a pair of pinchers. The bolt 0, as well as the thumb-piece c, are made in the same piece with the lever B, which is pivoted to the upper part of the case A by a pivot, d, the bolt being arranged to project from the lower part of said lever for operation through the front side of the case in the are of a circle, and the said leverhaving an extension, 0, of a curvilinear construction struck from the pivot (I as a center, said extension working through a hole or spring, f, in the back edge of the ease, and carrying or having attached to it thethumb-piece 0. By this construction, not only are the bolt and lever in one piece, thus reducing the number of parts, but the bolt has a gravitating action to shoot it into lock, thereby aiding the spring which controls it; or, in case of breakage of the spring,
effecting the shooting of the bolt; likewise the opening)" in the case, through which the lever works, instead of being an elongated or large one, as in separate bolt and lever arrangements, may be of only the same dimensions, or there about, as the portion 0 of the lever in its transverse section; thus making the whole device more sightly, and excluding dust or dirt and obstacles from gettin ginto the ease. The pivot d, on which the lever works, is fixed, and carries on its inner end a cheek-plate, g, which operates to steady or guide the'lever and to keep it in place prior to fitting the sashstop, and lock onto the sash and when removing it therefrom. 1) is the spring that serves to control the bolt or to shoot it into look. This spring, instead of being a loose spiral one, and applied directly to the bolt, is a simple flat or U-shaped one, formed of one or more thicknesses, and with its two legs of unequal length, for application directly to the lever, and through the latter to the bolt, its longer leg fitting at its end into a notch or pocket, h, in the case, and its shorter leg lying within or at the back of a flange, 2 of the lever, so that said sprin also is securely held in place, or from flying out when the stop and lock are removed from the case, yet is easily inserted and fitted to its place without the aid of special fastenings when putting the parts together, and as readily removed when required.
A sash-stop and lock constructed, as regards its several features, as described, combines in a high degree cheapness, with efficiency and durability.
hat is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
The bolt, in the form or an arc of aeirele, with extension finger-piece in the same vertical plane, and the pivoted arm forming a radius of the same circle, in combination with the case A, fingerrest b, and opening f of same size as the bolt, substantially as herein described.
ADDISON V. SANFORD.
