2 SHEETSSHEET 2- THOMAS C. HARVEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO. CALIFORNIA.
HEADLIGHT-DIMMEB.
To all whom-it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS C. HARVEIY,
' a citizen of theUnited States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful'lmprovement in Headlight-Dimmers, of which the followingis a specification.
.My invention relates'to socalled dimmers for vehicle headlight wherein inclined bars operate in conjunction with the reflector of the headlight; and the objects of .my invention are: First, to provide improved means whereby a portionof the magnified light rays are deflected toward the ground on both sides. of the headlight. Second, to provide improved means adapted to partially screen the lower portion of the headlight. Third,
.to provide improved means arrangedto defiect a portion of the magnified light rays to one side of the headlight. I accomplish these parts througho several objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference a e usedto designate similar St, the said specification and drawings, and in=which Figure 1 is a rearelevation of my improved dimmer disclosing the arrangement of the arcuate andcen'tral bars. a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a headlight reflector disclosing my improved device in section, secured thereto., Fig. 3. is a horizontal section of the reflector and dimmer disclosing the manner in which the central bar deflects a portion of the magnified rays to one side of the headlight.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 I with the ring 4. The inclined arcuate bars 7 are arranged to partially screen the lower portion of the headlight or reflector 1 when the ring is in position in order to eliminate the blinding glare visible to a person in front of the light when the eyes of said person are slightly above said headlight.
Fig. 2 is Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 14, 1916.
Application filed February 29, 1916. Serial No. 81,267.
The arcuate bars 7, by reason of the inclined curved under surface thereof, will also tend to difiuse the light by deflecting a portion ofthe magnified rays toward the ground and on either side of the headlight as disclosed by the broken lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A. vertically disposed central bar 8 is secured to the arcuate bars 7 and to the junction of the flange 6 with the ring 4. The central bar 8 is inclined or set at an angle in a vertical plane so that a portion of the magnified rays from the headlight or reflector 1 will be deflected toward onefs ide of the vehicle headlight thus enabling the driver of the vehicle to discern objects at the side as well as in frontof him.
It is intended that dimmers of this type shall be made with the central bars 8 mclined 111 opposite directions so that the light will be deflected toward both sides of' the road.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved dimmer for vehicle headlights that is adapted to screen the glare of the lower portion of the refiector or headlight and also to deflect a portion of the light raysto both sides of the vehicle as well as toward the ground.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A dimmer for vehicle headlights comprising a series of arcuate inclined bars arranged to deflect the magnified light rays toward the ground; and means for deflecta portion of theniagnified rays to one si e.
2. A dimmer for vehicle headlights comprising a series oi arcuate inclined bars arranged to partially screen the lower por tion of the headlight and to deflect a portion of the magnified light rays toward the ground; means arranged to deflect a portion of the rays to one side of the headlight; and means secured. to the arcuate bars and side deflecting means and arranged to secure the same to a headlight.
3. A. dimmer for vehicle headlights comprising a series of arcuate inclined bars arranged to partially screen the lower portion of the headlight and. to deflect a portion of the magnified light rays toward the ground; means arranged to deflect a portion of the magnified light rays to one side of the headlight; and a suitable ring secured to the arcuate bars and to the side deflecting means whereby the same may be secured within a headlight. p
l. A dimmer for vehicle headlights comprising a series of inclined arcuate bars arranged to partially screen the lower portion of the headlight and to deflect a portion of the magnified light rays toward the ground; a vertically disposed central bar arranged to deflect a portion of the light rays to one side of the headlight; and a suitable ring secured to the arcuate bars and to the vertical bar whereby the same may be secured within a headlight.
5. A dimmer for vehicle headlights cont In witness whereof I hereunto set my signature.
THOMAS C. HARVEY.
