To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MATHEW HARDWIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic- Seal Check Safety-Valves for Radiators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an automatic seal check safety valve for radiators.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction .of that class of radiator valves which are interposed between the radiator and the return pipe and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive automatic seal check safety valve adapted to permit the passage of air and water froma radiator and capable of confining the steam therein whereby the radiator is maintained at a high heating efiiciency.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety valve of this character equipped with means for enabling it to be readily cleaned and the check valve renewed without removing the body of the device from the radiator.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an automatic seal check safety valve constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Like numerals of reference designate cor responding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the automatic seal check safety valve comprises in its construction a tubular body 1 comprising an inlet portion 2 and an outlet portion 3 and provided intermediate of its ends with a depending downwardly tapered tubular portion l forming a trap for the water of condensation to form water seal. The inlet end 2 which is de-. signed to be connected with a radiator is interiorly threaded at 5 and the outlet is exteriorly threaded at 6 to enable it to be connected by a union 7 with a return pipe 8 and an air pipe 9- but any other suitable means may be employed for connecting the valve with the radiator and the said pipe and while a union is shown it is not necessary to employ the same to facilitate the removal of the device as access to the interior thereof may be readily had for cleaning the device or repairing the check valve as hereinafter fully explained. The body 1 is provided with a central depending transversely disposed partition 10 preferably cored in casting to save metal and reduce the weight of the device and extending downwardly from the top of the body into the depending tubular portion 4 and terminating short of the bottom thereof. The front and rear faces 11 and 12 of the transverse partition are preferably curved as shown and the enlarged top portion 13 of the partition is pro- .vided with oppositely inclined air passages 14. converging upwardly and terminating at atop opening 15. The body 1 is provided at the opening or socket 15 with an' interiorly threaded flange 16 receiving a screw plug 17 which is adapted to afiord access to both of the oppositely inclined air passages 14 for enabling the same to be readily cleaned. The lower depending portion 4; is also interiorly threaded for the reception of a screw plug 18 which is adapted to be removed for cleaning. the bottom of the device should any sediment accumulate in the water seal portion.
The inlet portion 2 of the body 1 is equipped with an inclined check valve 19 hinged at the top at 20 and coacting with an inclined valve seat 21 and automatically closable against the same and adapted to be opened by water passing through the body from the radiator. The check valve 19 is provided in its upper portion with a relatively small aperture 23 and it carries a fiat valve 24 adapted to close under back pres sure to enable the check valve to close entirely under such back pressure and prevent air or water from returning to the radiator. The front portion of the body 1 is provided check valve 19 and having an interiorly threaded outer-portion 26 for the reception of a screw plug 27 adapted to be removed to afford access to the check valve and the supplemental valve 2% for closing the perforation-23. The body is also provided in rear of the transverse'partition with a water check 28 consisting of a valve hinged at the bottom at 29 and limited in its opening movement by a suitable shoulder 30. The bottom clean out plug 18 is adapted to afford access to the water check 28 which will permit water to flow through the return pipe but prevent the return of the water thereby coacting with the main check valve 19.
