To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that we, PETER GRABLER and FRED H. KELsEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have 1nvented new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device to be attached to an explosive engine of the type employed in driving automobiles, motor boats, and the like, for controlling or varying the air supply to the manifold of the engine.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide means for controlling or varying the supply of air to the manifold, and to vary the temperature of the air in accordance with the demands of the engine, whereby a maximum efficiency of the engine 1s secured, and the engine is at 4the same time economically operated.
A further object is to provide means whereby kerosene, or the like, may be in! troduced into the cylinder of the engine while the latter is running, for the purpose of cleaning off carbon deposit in the cylinder.
A further object is to provide means convenient to the driver, for the ready control and manipulation of the device.
The invention will be hereinafter fully Set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims. f

Referring to the drawing, 10 designates an automobile body, shown conventionally, 11 the engine. and 12 the manifold, of the engine, all of which may be of any usual or preferred construction. Secured to the dashboard 13 of the automobile is a valve casing 14 provided with a cylindrical chamber 15 closed by end caps 16, one of which is provided with an opening 17. The caps are interchangeable and may be secured to the casing in any preferred manner. As
shown in the drawing, the ends of the caslng are threaded internally, and the caps are correspondingly threaded, and provided with squared portions 18 to be engaged by a wrench. The casing 14 is provided with two inlet openings 19, 20, located at each end, respectively, and leading to the said openlngs are pipes `21, 22, respectively. Leading outwardly from the chamber 15 are two outlet ports which communicate with a common outlet chamber 23 having a dis-v charge opening 24 which is connected by a pipe 25 with the manifold 12. Within the valve chamber 15 is a slide valve 26, prefer-l ably cylindrioal in form and corresponding in diameter to the diameter of the chamber.
Said valve is approximately a little longer than half the length of the valve chamber so thatl when the valve is at either extreme of its movement it will close one inlet opening and one outlet port, and when in its intermediate position it will close both outlet ports, leaving the inlet openings uncovered. The operating rod for the valve extends through the opening 17, and is provided at its other end with an operating button 30. The operating rod 27 is also passed through a iexible conduit 31, one end of which is secured within the opening 17, the other lend being secured in the lower end of a guide sleeve 32 carried by arms 33 secured to the steering column 34 in any suitable manner. The rod 27 extends through the sleeve 32 and is secured to the sleeve-like extension of the button 30. A springV catch 35 is sei cured to the guide sleeve 32, said catch havf ing a lip to engage said button 30 ora groove 36 in the cylindrical portion of said button, so as to lock the valve in either extreme of its movement. It will be noted that the inlet pipe 22 has its inlet end 28 wrapped around the exhaust 29 of the engine. The casing 14 is provided with a transverse boss 40 located opposite the discharge opening 24 and communicating with the outlet chamber 23. Connected vwith said boss by a pipe 41 is a priming cup 42, controlled by a valve 43.
During the operation of the engine it is sometimes desirable to supply airV to the manifold of the engine, in addition to that which passes through the carbureter, and the efficiency of the engine at these times, depends upon whether the auxiliary air that is admitted, is hot or cold. By moving the valve 26 so as to cover the inlet opening 20, the adjacent outlet port is also covered, whereupon the suction of the engine draws cold air through pipe 21 into the chamber 15 and thence into the outlet chamber 23, and finally through the discharge port 2d to the manifold 12. Should heated air be desirable, the valve is shifted to cover openyprime the engine, the valve 26 is moved to its intermediate position to cover the outlet ports, and the desired quantity of hydrocarbon is placed in cup 42. Then the valve 4:3 isopeiied the hydrocarbon passes through-v pipe 41 into .the outletl chamber 23, and from thence to the manifold. In the same manner kerosene may be introduced to the engine cylinder, without interrupting the operation of theengine, for the purpose of cleaning off carbon deposit.
Frointhe foregoing it will be seen that our improved auxiliary air device is simple in construction, and is .capable of supplying airat the desired temperature, toconform to the requirements of the engine, thereby insuring economical and eiicient operation of the latter. It will also be noted that the device is readily controlled.
Having thus explained the nature of our invention and described an operative manner of .constructing and using the same, althoughwithout attempting to set forthv all ofthe forms in whichit may be made, or all of the forms of its use, what we claim is 1. i A valve of the character described comprisinga valve casing having independent, spaced-apart inlet passages y and spacedapart outlet passages, the outlet passages leading fronithe casing at a point between the inlet., passages,l and a slidable valve mounted to reciprocate longitudinally within said casing .to selectively close all ofsaid passages.
2. ,A valve of the characted described comprising an elongated valve casing having independent, spaced-apart inlet passages and spaced-apart outlet passages, the inlet and outlet passages being Varranged in alinement, a delivery pipe for connecting the outlet passages with the engine manifold,
and a slidable valve mounted to reciprocate longitudinally within the casing to selectively close the inlet and outlet passages.

A valve of the character described comprising a valve Vcasing Vprovided with removable end caps, one of which is provided with an opening, said casing being provided with spaced-apart inlet passages and spacedapart outlet passages, the outlet passages leading from the casing at a point between the inlet passages, a slidable valve mounted 1 mounted to reciprocate within said casing toselectively close all .of Vsaid passages, and.
means for locking the valve in positionto` Y cover all of the outlet passages.
5. A valve of the character described comprisinga casing having a valvechamber and an Youtlet chamber, passages being provided between said valve chamber and ysaid outlet chamber, said valve chamber having inlet openings spaced from each other with the outlet openings between them, said casing being also provided with a supplemental passage extendingtiansversely thereof and leading tothe outlet chamber, and a slidable valve .mounted` to reciprocate within the valve chamberto selectively control the inlet and outlet passages.

A valve of the character described comprising a casing having a valve chamber-` provided with independent spaced apart inlet passages and spaced apart outlet passages, the latter being located between the inlet passages, a hollow cylindrical valve, closed at onev end, and slidably mounted within said casing, and an operating rod attached to the closed end of said valve and exteiidingthrough one end Vof said casing.
