Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
Application filed October 19, 1915. Serial No. 56,756.
To all w hom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK FORAMA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Wash ington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in heel plates for shoes.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of heel plates for shoes and to provide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient heel plate of strong and durable construction adapted to be readily applied to various styles and grades of shoes and capable of being firmly secured to the same and of engaging and interlocking with the lift of the heels.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad vantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspec tive view of a heel plate constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of a heel illustrating the arrangement of the heel plate shown in Fig. 1. 7
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the heel plate comprises a having flat upper and lower faces 2 and 3 and designed to be secured to a heel 1 with its lower face 3. in flush relation with the tread of the heel and the said lower face 3 is preferably roughened as shown to prevent the wearer of the shoe from slipping. The body portion which is substantially oblong has curved inner and outer edges 5 and 6, the outer edge being convex and the inner edge being concaved and the convex outer edge being adapted to conform to the configuration of a heel.
The body portion 1 of the heel plate is provided at the end portions with inwardly extending flanges 7 formed integral with the body portion of 1n flush relation with the upper face thereof as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawlng. The flanges 7 which are relatively thin to enable them to be placed between the lifts and to interlock the body portion with the lower lift of the heel project from the inner edge 5 and are separated by an intervening space or recess 8 to enable the outer lift of the heel to be nailed between the said flanges. The said flanges 7 which are substantially rectangular have straight edges and are provided at their outer edges with extensions 9 forming narrow flanges across the ends of the body portion of the heel plate to interlock the end of the heel plate with the lower or outer lift 10 of the heel. The body portion 1 of the heel plate is also provided with a plurality of perforations 11 adaptedto receive fastening devices for securing the heel plate to the heel 4. These fastening devices may be of any desired character and any preferred number may be employed, it being desired to provide perforations at the ends of the body portion and in some instances at the center thereof as shown in Fig. 4. The spaced end flanges form a recess which is entirely open at the inner side of the heel plate to interlock the said flanges with the solid portion of the heel and to permit a solid portion to lie between the projecting flanges. Also the open character of the recess greatly facilitates the fitting of the heel plate in position without unnecessary waste of leather or weakening of the heel.
What is claimed is A heel plate comprising a substantially oblong body portion of approximately uniform width throughout its entire length curved longitudinally to present a concave inner side edge and a convex outer side edge and provided at the said inner concave side edge with thin flat imperforate flanges projecting inwardly from the ends of the body portion of the heel plate to interlock the same with the heel at such points, and spaced apart throughout their entire length to form an intervening recess to enable the heel to be nailed between the flanges, the recess being entirely open at the ends of the flanges to permit them to engage with a relatively large solid intervening portion of the the heel plate and arranged heel, said flanges being provided with outer prevent the heel plate from rocking or dropnarroW extensions forming end flanges, ping out of flush relation With the heel. which extend entirely across the end edges In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 10 of the body portion of the heel plate from in presence of a Witness. 5 the outer side edge to the inner side edge to FRANK FORAMA.
interlock the ends of the body portion with Witness: the solid contiguous portions of the heel to M. I. LEWIS.
