To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCH G. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mapleton, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog-Oilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. v

This invention relates to an improved hog oiler and has for its primary object to provide a simple and effective device for applying oil to the hides of hogs, whereby the animals will be relieved from the attacks of vermin and such parasites destroyed.

It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a device for the above purpose embodying an oil receiving reservoir, a roller mounted therein, and a spring-pressed oil applying roller mounted above said first named roller having a peripheral jacket or coating of felt or other whereby the same are rendered highly efficient and reliable in practical use and capable of manufacture at relatively small cost.

With the above and other objects in view,

my invention'consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the oil receiving reservoir which may be of any desired capacity and is provided adjacent one of its ends with a vertical transverse partition wall 6 to afford a sup; ply chamber'7. The top wall of this chamber has an opening 8 therein through which the oil may be conveniently supplied to replenish the chamber, and said opening may be closed by a suitable plug. This partition wall and the end wall of the reservoir farthest removed therefrom, are provided with vertical standards or uprights 9 which are longitudinally slotted, as indicated at 10. In suitable bearings 11, the trunnions 13 on the ends of ,theroller 12 areiremovably mounted. This roller operates within the reservoir 5 and is preferably covered with felt or other suitable absorbent material indicated at 14. To the upper edges of the side walls of the reservoir, and between the standards 9, the longitudinally disposed, transversely inclined bars 15 are secured by means of the screws indicated at 17, said bars promoting inwardly between the standards over the roller 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. n V

18 designates the upper oil applying roller which is also covered with felt or other absorbent material shown at 19. The trunnions 20 on the ends of this roller are vertically movable in the slots 10 of the standards 9, and coil springs 21 arranged in said slots normally act to force the roller downwardly and yieldingly hold the same in contact with the periphery of the roller 12. To

By the provision of the transversely inclined bars 15 against which the animals hide bears, it will be apparent that any surplus of oil expressed from the absorbent covering of the roller 18 will either flow upon the inclined surface of the bar and thereby be directed upon the hide of the animal, or will collect upon the upper edge of the bar and be directed inwardly and returned to the reservoir.

In this manner, it will beunderstood that the oil is applied to thebodies of the animals without waste. The upper roller 18 may be covered with rope or wire wound about the same in lieu of the felt covering above referred to. It is also apparent that From the foregoing description, takenin connectlon with the accompanying drawing,

the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of the invention will be clearlyand fully understood.

The device, while exceedingly simple, is highly eflicient and reliable in practical use and provides means for automatically ap-' plying the oil to the bodies of the animals in a thorough and economical manner.

'While l'have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts, it is to be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hog oiler including a reservoir, a roller rotatably mounted in said reservoir and provided with an absorbent peripheral sheet, transversely inclined bars secured upon the upper edges 01": the side walls of the reservoir and projecting inwardly and upwardly over said roller, and a second roller rotatably mounted above said first named roller and projecting downwardly below the inner edges of said bars, said second roller also having an absorbent sheet contacting with the absorbent sheet of the first named roller and adapted to be engaged by the hide of the animal, surplus oil expressed from the covering of the second named roller being directed by the inclined bars upon the hide of the animal.

2. A hog oiler including a reservoir having a supply chamber at one end in communication with the reservoir proper, a roller rotatably mounted. in said reservoir having an absorbent peripheral sheet, longitudinally extending transversely inclined bars secured to the upper edges of the side walls of the reservoir and projecting inwardly over said roller in spaced relation thereto, a second roller rotatably mounted above said first named roller and also having an absorbent peripheral sheet, said second roller projecting over the uppercdges of said inclined bars and springs normally acting to force said latter roller downwardly in con.- tact with the periphery of the first named roller.
