Description
UNITED STATES PATENT onirica.
ENOS C. VERKLER, OI CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Application tiled April 23, 1915. Serial No. 23,880.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ENOS C. VERKLER,'a
citizen of the United States, anda resident of the city of Chicago, .county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garmeiitl Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garment hangers, and has for its object the yproduction 0f a device of this character of the type wherein is provided means for effectually lockingthe garment thereto.
.A further object is the production of a garmentv hanger which will be extremely simple in construction and efficient in use.
thereof.
The preferred form of construction, ,as illustrated lin the drawing, comprises an elongated bowed o1"v curved body lformed of wood.y The body 1 is provided midway `its 'ends with the usual upwardly extending suspending hook 2.
Coperatingwith the body 1 at either side ,of the suspending hook 2 is a clamping device formed of a substantially U-shaped spring wire-3. One end 4 of the wire is driven into the body l at the under s1de thereof, said end 4 entering said body at an' angley in order to securely lock thel saine thereto and thereby prevent ready, withdr'awal of the saine. The opposite endof the wire 3 extends loosely through an elongated verticallyl extending slot 5 rovided in thememberfl, the upper termina of saidvi.
end being bent outwardly as at 6 to constiytute a jaw adapted to yieldingly engage against the upper side of the body l.. The

the end portion 6 may be moved upwardly by engagement with the bight` portion of the member 3 and pressing the same upwardly. When this is done, the member will be flexed or sprung out of its normal4 shape so that when released the end portion 6 will be immediately returnedto its initial position In order to prevent bending instead of fiexing of the member 3 and therebykill thev resiliency of the same, the
meinber adjacent the anchored end 4c thereof is formed with a wide curve 7. Through this formation the flexing or springing of the member 3 adjacent the pivot orv fulcrum thereof is' distributed,- over a considerable length and thus the burden correspondingly distributed and over ,taxation at any one point inthe Wire obviated.
ln use the edges of the garment arranged upon the hanger are clamped between Vthe ends 6l and the upper sidesof the body l, withthe result that accidental slipping of the garment fromthe hanger is positively prevented.- In order to prevent injury to the garment through rusting'of the wire,
and in orderto prevent slipping from en-A gagement with the. ends 6 of the wire members, said ends are preferably covered with tubular rubber coverings 6 which,- are held invposition by friction. ,a
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carry ing my invention into eii'ect, this is capable of variation andinodification without de parting from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claim. Y
Having described'- my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
at each end of saidjbody,v said means comprising an elongated*resilientv member having one end secured to said body at the un-i v.der side thereof and having its opposite end .5'0 arrangement is'such, as will he seen. that yicldingly engaging-against 'the upper side' iocof said body, the central portion of said In testimony whereof I have signed my member projectmg below the under sfle of .nume to this speclcntlrm in the presence of said body for .manual engagement in prestwo subsm'bng \\'itnv.\'svs. ing the same upwardly to move the last men- ENOS C.
