To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Davin G. JOSEPH, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of Martins Ferry, county of Belmont, and State of Ohio, DAVID DUMMER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Warwood, Wheeling, county of Ohio, and State of West Virginia, and .EVAN J. HOLLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and 'a resident of Martins Ferry, county of Belmont, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll-Polishing Apparatus,
of which the following is a specification.
I This invention relates broadly to roll polinvention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 a transverse section of the invention applied to a set of rolls; Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the abrading blocks and the carrying means therefor;

In practice, the blocks separately yield to conform to inequalities in the surface of the roll 1. Thus is avoided the objection to the employment of a single bar of the full length of the roll nstead of the short blocks 16, it being apparent that depressions in the rolls due to unequal wear would notbe engaged by such bar.
Being pivotally supported, the hangers 4 obviously permit the levers supported thereby to swing inward and outward with respect to the axis of the engaged roll.
For maintaining the polished condition of the lower roll 2, the latter is engaged by apparatus substantially-similar to that here: inbefore described located on the opposite side of the mill. In said similar apparatus, the blocks 16 engage the roll below a horizontal plane passed through said roll, and the lever B has its outer end curved in a. direction reverse to the curvature of the corresponding end of lever 6.
As is apparent, when it is desired to removethe apparatus to an out-of-the-way position with respect to the rolls, the bar 8 with its associated parts may be lifted from the head-portions 7 of the levers 6, whereupon the latter may be lifted from the hangers 4 and detached from'the ring 23 of the tensioning means.
In order to prevent the formation of annular ribs on the surfaces of the rolls due to the slight intervening spaces between adjacent blocks 16, the latter maybe slightly adjusted laterally from time totime so that wear of-all parts of the surfaces of the rolls will be substantially uniform.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A roll-polishing device comprising oscillatory hangers carried by the roll housings, a pair of levers fulcrumed on said hangers, said levers being unconnected and having head portions, a bar having its end reinovably mounted upon and interlocked with said head portions, a plurality of alined roll-polishing blocks carried by said bar, and resilient means connected to the outer end of copies of this patent may be obtained for in cents each, by name the each of said levers whereby the latter are caused to yieldingly present said blocks to the surface of a roll.
2. A roll-polishing device comprising a hanger pivotally mounted upon each of the roll housings and adapted for oscillatory movement toward and away from a roll, a
lever pivotally mounted upon each of said hangers, a bar having its ends removably mounted upon and interlocked with the head portions, a plurality of alinedroll-polishing blocks carried by said bar, resilient means connected to the outer ends of said levers whereby the latter are caused to yieldingly thrust said bar forward for presenting said blocks to the surface of the roll, and means carried by said bar whereby said blocks are rendered separately yieldable.
3. A roll-polishing device comprising a pair of levers. located adjacent to the opposite roll housings, oscillatory hangers carried by said housings and constituting fulcrums upon which said levers are pivotally supported, said hangers permitting said levers to swing forward and back with respect to a roll, said levers having head portions at the inner ends thereof embodying a lip and a recess, a bar having its ends adapted for removably interlocking with said head portions, each of said ends having portions for interengaging the lips and recesses of said head portions, a plurality of alined roll-polishing blocks carried by said bar, and resilient means connected to the outer ends of said levers whereby the latter are caused to yieldingly present said blocks to the surface of said roll.

In a roll-polishing apparatus, a lever pivotall supported by each roll housing, said lever having a head portion embodying an upwardly and rearwardly directed lip and provided with a recess below and in front of said lip, a bar having ends adapted for removably interlocking with said head portions, each of said ends having a lug -for seating in the recess of such head portion and having a hook-like flange for engaging the lip of such head portion, roll-polishing blocks carried by said bar, and means associated with said levers whereby the latter are a vrated to yieldingly press said blocks to the surface of the rolls.
