WASHBOILER.
- peccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '7, 1916.
l Application filed December 28, 1915. Serial No. 69,039.
A following is a specification.
In the operation of an ordinary laundry i gas stove, the products of combustion of the gas are discharged into the room and even Where the burner is close to the bottom of the boiler a poisonous gas is generated and inhaled by the person in the room, often with fatal results.
The object of my invention is to provide means in connection with a gas burner for supporting the boiler and conducting away the products of combustion and poisonous gases, and at the same time taking away the steam from the boiler. which is ordinarily discharged into the room and condenses on the; Hoor or walls` Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generallyT in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and. particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings-forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a heater and boiler embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line mof Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, showing the manner of supporting the boiler at the top of the heater.
In the drawing,.2 represents the shell or jacket of the heater, made preferably of sheet metal, and supported upon suitable legs 3. Brackets 4 are secured to said legs and support the plate 5, having a series-of air intake openings G therein. beneath a gas burner 7. This burner communicates through the jacket 2 with a gas supply pipe 8 and a nozzle 9 is mounted on 'an extension of the pipe 8 and arranged to project a flame through a port 10 in the wall. of the jacket for the purpose of igniting the gas in the main burner, the flow of gas to the burner and nozzle being controlled by valves 11 and 12.
At the top of the jacket a support for the boiler is provided, consisting, preferably, of i an angle bar bent to a circular form and having a horizontal flange 13 projecting into the opening in the top o11 the jacket and its vertical fiange secured to the side walls of Athe jacket. An elbow 14 is provided at the top of the jacket on one side and a pipe 15 communicates therewith and forms a vent;
:for the products: of combustionv of the burner, vand for any gases whichinay be generated under the boiler.
16 represents a boiler, preferably cylindrical in forni a-iid having a cover 17 and an outwardly rolled bead 18 at its .upper edge that is adapted to rest on the horizontal flange 13 and support the boiler within the jacket. Handles 19 are preferablyslecured to the walls of the boiler and lit within notches'20 in the flange 13. I prefer also to provide openings 21 in theupper walls of the boiler through which the steam from the boiling clothes'n'ay escape into'the` jacket.
The. passage of the products of combustion around the boiler and through the vent pipe will create or establish a circulation and cause the steam/flowing out through the openings 21 to immediately pass to the vent pipe, mingling with the products of combustion therein. In this way I not only avoid the diffusion of the products ot' combustion and poisonous gases/from the flame of the burner, but also-remove the steam of the boiling clothes, which usually is discharged into the room and condeiises on the walls or any articles that may be in the room. I thus not only eliminate entirely the dangerous gases produced at the burner, but also dispose of the steam which may come from the boiling clothes or whatever may be contained in the boiler. Such a device may, of course, be used in connectionwith a cooking utensil and still be within the scope of my invention. l
' Near the bottom of the boiler I prefer to provide a guard 22 bolted to the jacket and having an inwardly and downwardly extending flange 23 which terminates near the wall of the boiler and is adapted to direct the gas Hames downwardly and forwardly to a gap or opening that is provided between the ends of the guard. This guard compels y the products of combustion to follow a circuitous pathiii the jacket and linsures the exposure of all ortions of the boiler wall to the action o the burner Aflame. This deector or guard 22 may be varied in length, according to the size of the passage desired for the products of combust' n.
BEST AVAlLABLE COP` The device may be ,made in various sizes and in various ways the details of construction herein shown and described may be modified aid still be Within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
l. The combination, with a sheet metal jacket having an open top and closed bottorn, of a gas burner mounted on said bottoni, said jacket having a flange encircling its open top and provided near said flange with an exhaust opening, a pipe connection therefor, a boiler fitting within said jacket and seated on said flange and forming a substantially steam-tight joint therewith7 the wall ot' said boiler having openings therein contiguous to said exhaust opening, for the purpose specified.
The combination. with a jacket having 3. The combination, with` a jacket und a burner mounted therein, of a boiler suspended within said jacket and spaced from said burner and the walls of the jacket, a delector device inter osed between said boiler and the walls o said jacket and ex tending artially around the boiler, compelling t 1e flames and products of combustion from the burner to follow a tortuous path around said boiler,a vent pipe leading from saidfjacket, said boiler having discharge openings for the passage of steam to said vent pipe. f
4. The combination, with a jacket and a burner mounted therein, of a boiler fitting within the open top of said jacket and depending to a point adjacent said burner, the upper walls of said jacket having an exhaust opening and a pipev connection therefor, the walls of' said boiler havmg openings therein to allow the esca of steam into the space between said 011er and jacket, said jacket having means above said burner between it and said exhaust opening:r Jfor deflecting the lanies from said burner and' compelling them to follow a tortuous path around said boiler.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of December, 1915.
