Be it'known that I, WILLIAM RENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio7 have invented a new and useful Stop-Valve, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be used in the cellar of a residence or business house, to prevent water from backing up into the cellar, through a drain or sewer.
This invention aims to provide a novel form of valve7 and to provide a novel mounting for the valve. l
Another object of the invention is to iniprove the construction of the casing in which the valve is mounted.
lt is within the province oic the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details ot construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings. figure l? shows in vertical section, a stop valve constructed in accordance with the present inhorizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, parts being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a fragmental elevation showing the opposite side of the valve lever from that depicted in Fig. 1.
ln carrying out the present invention there is provided a casing 1 adapted to be placed in a cellar-bottom '21 and to be supported on a sewer pipe 2. Resting removably on the casing 1 is a lid 3 or any desired sort, provided with perforations 4. Located within the casing 1 and formed integrally therewith is a funnel-shaped hopper 5 supporting a screen and including a depending neck 6 located slightly to one side of the vertical axis of the casing. The casing 1 and hopper 5 are formed integrally, and there are no joints in the structure likely to leak. rlhe casing l and the hopper 5 are so constructed that they may be cast in one piece, without diiificulty.
Projecting laterally from the hopper- 5 and the neck 6 is an arm 7 having a circular opening 8 provided with a radial extension 9. rl`he numeral 10 designates a lever of the first order, provided at its outer end with a weight 11 adapted to coact with a buffer 12 carried by the hopper 5. Projecting laterally from the lever 10 intermediate its ends and if desired formed integrally therewith, is a shaft 14 having a radially projecting lug 15. The shaft 14 is mounted to rock in the opening 8 in the arm 7 and constitutes a fulcrum for the lever 10. At its inner end., the lever 10 carries a socket 16. Extending from the socket 15 at the bottom thereof is a tapered boss 17.
rhe numeral 18 designates a concavo-conveX valve adapted to cooperate with the neck G under the action of the Weight 11 to constitute a closure for the neck. rlhe valve 18 is provided with a stein 19', mounted loosely in the socket 16 of the lever, the construction being such that the valve may rock on the lever, to the end that the valve will cooperate with the neck 6 when the lever is tilted. ln the lower end of the stern 19 'of the Vvalve there is formed a recess 20, of conical or tapered form and designed to receive the boss 17 of the lever loosely, the boss cooperating with the recess to form a mounting on which the valve structure may tilt readily and with little' friction.
lNater or other material discharged into the casing 1 through the lid 3, will depress the valve 18, the lever 10- being tilted, and the material thus discharged into the casing Sewing through the neck 6 and out of the sewer or drain pipe 2. rlhe weight 11,"obvi ously, constitutes a means for restoring the valve 18 to a closed position with respect to the neck 6.
Especial attention is directed to the manner in which the lever 10 is fulcrumed on the arm 7 it being noted that because no screws or bolts are used, the lever cannot become Vdetached accidentally from the arm.
ln assembling the lever 10 with the arm 7, the valve 18 is removed from the lever. The shaft 14 on the lever is slid endwise through the opening'S in the arm 7, the lug 15 assing through the radial extension 9 o the opening 8. Should the shaft 14 now be turned through a small arc, the lug '15 will be disposed out of alinement with the extension 9 of the opening 8, as shown in Fig. 3,
-and "consequent-ly, the lever cannot becomeI .from being tilted enough yto rock the shaft d 14 `untillthe .lug 15 lon the shaft can bealined with theeXtensionQ of the opening 8 in the arm 7. Consequently an accidental detachment of the lever from the arm` is impossible. V
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a casing including a hopper having an opening; an arm projecting from the hopper and provided with a journaling aperture having a lateral extension; a lever counter-Weighted at its outer end and provided intermediate its ends with a shaft mounted to rock in the aperture of the arm, the shaft having a lug adapted to pass through the extension of the aperture, the lug bearing against one side of' the arm, out of alinelnent With the eXtension; and a valve carried by the inner end of .the lever and controlling the opening, the valve bearing against the hopper to prevent the lug from coming into alinement with the extensionwhen the shaft is rocked, the valve being detachable from the lever to permit a sufficient tilting of the .'ever to aline the lug with the extension.
2. In a device of the class described, Aa casing including a hopper having an opening; an arm projecting from the hopper; a lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends on the arm and -provided at its outer end with a counter-weight, the lever being provided upon its inner end with a socket; and a valve controlling the opening, the valve including a stem loosely received in the socket to rockl therein, whereby the valve may be permitted to cooperate with the opening.

In a device of the class described, a casing including a hopper having an opening; a lever located Within the casing; a fulcrum forthe lever; a Weight on the outer end of the lever; a socket on the inner end of the lever and provided in its bottom with an upstanding boss; and a valve controlling the opening, the valve including a stem received
