Description
N. (ii-BECK & s, STROCK.
Improvement in Wood Planing Machins.
N0 120 426 Patented'0ct. 31',1871..
I I Q i r NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NEWTON G. FREOK AND SOLOMON STROOK, OF MILLERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-PLANING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 120,426, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, NEWTON O. FRECK and SOLOMON STROCK, oi Millersburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood-Planin g Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part ofthis specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in woodplaning machines; and it consists in the application to such machines of feed -rollers, edgingtools, and guides adapted for feeding and working two or more boards side by side simultaneously, planing them on the side and both edges.
Figure l is a side elevation of one of the feedrolls, such as we propose to use; and Fig. 2 is a partial end view of a planing-mill, showing our proposed arrangement of edging or vertical rotary cutting-heads.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts.
We propose to have the feed'rollers A provided with two or more fluted sections 0 between the cylindrical parts D, according to whether we propose to plane two or more boards at once; and we have one center cutter-head, E, and two others, F, for dressing the edges when two boards are to be run at once. If three are to be run, there will be four of these cutters; but we prefer to use only three for two boards at once. In this case the center head will be non-adjustable, and a guide, G, as wide as said head, will be arranged with it for the two boards to be pressed up to by spring-guides or rollers at their outer edges, and the outer heads F will be adjustable toward and from said center head as the width of the boards vary. 1f four cutter-heads are to be used, three of them will be adjustable, or two may be nonadjustable, as preferred. H represents a screwrod, which may be employed for adjusting the outer cutter-heads, the connections of it with them or the bearings in which they run being of any approved arrangement.
By preference the center head will carry the grooving-tools when the stufl' is being dressed for flooring, and the outer ones will have the ton guing-tools.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the cutter-heads E F F, guide G, and feedrollers G, of a planing-machine, substantially in the manner herein described, for planing and edging two or more boards simultaneously.
NEWTON O. FREOK. SOLOMON STROOK.
