TRACK CLEANER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 2. 1916.

33:1 van imz/ GEORGE B. BEGG, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
TRACK-CLEANER.
mana e.
Application filed May 2, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE B. BEGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Track-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to track cleaners for use in connection with the wheels of saw-mill carriages; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous track cleaner and wheel guard hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which are hereby made a part hereof: Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrative of one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modification, and: Fig. i is aview similar to Fig. 2 of the modification.
I11 each embodiment of my invention the track cleaner and wheel guard is reversible with a view to prolonging its usefulness and eiiiciency, and carried by said cleaner and guard are means for clearing the perimeter of the track wheel of bark, saw-dust, etc., the whole resulting in keeping the track traversed by the wheel free from foreign substance so that there is no liability of the saw-mill carraige moving unevenly and giving rise to irregularities or imperfections in the lumber.
Referring by numeral to Figs. 1 and 2: 1 is the track wheel, mounted on a shaft 2 which in turn, is carried by a saw-mill carriage (not shown), and 3 is the track cleaner and wheel guard which is designed to rest longitudinally on and traverse a track or rail and to receive and be moved by the wheel 1.
My novel track cleaner and guard comprises two longitudinal sections I of suitable metal, transverse bolts 5 extending through said sections, and nuts 6 mounted on said bolts. The sections 4 are recessed to receive the wheel 1, and their upper and lower sides Specification of Letters Patent.

are identical in form and construction. Consequently when one side of the cleaner and guard is impaired by frictional wear against the rail, the cleaner and guard may be reversed or inverted to present the other side to the rail. In this way the usefulness of the cleaner and guard is materially prolonged. It will also be observed that at 7 the cleaner and guard is provided with edge portions, opposed to the perimeter of the wheel 1, and calculated to remove saw dust therefrom.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4c is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the exception that it is provided with anti-friction rollers 7 in lieu of edge portions 7 to engage the perimeter of the wheel 1; the said rollers 7 being mounted on the transverse bolts 5. It will be noted in this connection that both the edge portions 7 and the rollers 7 engage the perimeter of the wheel 1 and occupy the same position relative thereto irrespective of which horizontal side of the track cleaner and guard is opposed to the track or rail.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is:
A track cleaner and wheel guard for use in conjunction with a track wheel, having upper and lower sides identical in form and construction and also having an opening eX- tending throughout its height to receive the wheel and further having in said opening means to engage the perimeter of the wheel; said means being arranged to occupy the sameposition relative to the wheel irrespective of which horizontal side of the cleaner and guard is opposed to the track or rail.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE B. BEGG.
