Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '7, 1916.
Application i1ed May 23, 1916. Serial No. 99,462.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY D. 'WILLIAMs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Locking Devices for Hatch-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled ih the art to which it appertains to make Aand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures ofreference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety devices for preventing accidents in hatches in connection with firerooms on torpedo boats. f
In the fire rooms on torpedo boats, which are under forced air draft used for' different purposes, in which the air is forced into the re room by suitable blowers, the air going from re rooms through air shutters into the fire box and up the stack, regulated according to the smoke, 'it is necessary, when the blowers are in operation, that, in the event of a person going through the bottom door, the upper hatch door be closed against being opened, otherwise serious injury might befall the person passing through the lower hatch door, which, in the event of both doors being opened at the same time, will cause the lower door to be blown closed -with terrilic force.
The present invention consists of an au.- tomatic means whereby, when the lower door is released, the upper door is held in a locked relation.
My invention consists of various details.
the latch released and the door opened. Fig. 3 is a sectional view-on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Reference 'now being had to the details of the drawings-by numeral 1 designates a hatch compartment with an opening 2 therein and in each compartment is positioned a ladder 2.
3 designates a door, hinged at 6, to said opening and provided with a sight aperture 4. The outside of the door is provided with a handle 5 for convenience in opening and closing thesame. Locking pawls 7 and 8 are mounted, the former upon a pivot 9 and the-latter is pivotally mounted upon the pin 10, and 11 designates a bar to which the two lockingv pawls are pivoted, said bar being provided with a handle 12. The bar extends up through an aperture in the deck and is pivotally connected at 14 with a link 15 which in turn is pivotally connected through the medium of a pin 16 with a movable pin locking member 17 which isv -to the under surface of the cover by the straps 25. The two bolts 22 have pivotal connection through the medium of the pins 26 with corresponding ends of the angle levers 27 which are pivotally mounted upon. the pins 28 and the long arms of the angle levers 27 are pivotally connected throughL the medium of the pin 29 with the shank portion of the bolt 23 to which la handle 30 is connected by means of the links 31, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A coiled spring 32 is interposed between a'strap'33 upon the under surface of the cover and a collar 34 and its purpose is to hold the various bolts normally in locked relation or in the positions shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
It will be noted upon reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings that the inner surface of the upwardly projecting portion of the hatch compartment has notches, designated vby numerals 35, which are adapted to be engaged by bolts. A pin 37 is mounted in an aperture in the wall of the hatch chamber and in alinement with the bolt 23 and serves as a means whereby, when pushed inward against the bolt 23, may cause the latter to disengage its notch in the wall of the hatch chamber and at the same time cause the other bolts to be withdrawn, thus allowing the hatch door to swing open. When the member 17 is in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, the L-shaped endv of said member will be positioned over the pin so that it will be impossible to, release the. bolts when the door is locked closed and which will be the position when the lower door 3 is opened, I Y
From4 the foregoing,y it will be noted that, when the'locking pawls 7 and 8 are in released positions, allowing the lower door to be. opened, access maybe had to the interior of the hatch cham-ber without; any possibility of the top hatch door being opened from the outside, thus avoiding any possibility of serious injury incident tol Vboth doo-rs, being opened at the same time.
What 1; claim to be new is 2,--V Y 1. A safety device. for doors upon hatch chambers upon torpedo boats, etc., comprising, in combination with-a hatch chamber with la lower door andy a door in the top thereof, movable locking pawls mounted upon the wall of the chamber andy adapted tolocl; said lower door closed, locking bolts uponl the upper door, means fori releasing said bolts,A andz mechanism actuated by said locking pawls for preventing the bolts from c being released when` the pawls are in unlocked positions.
2. Av safety device for doors upon hatch chambersupon torpedo boats, etc., comprising, in combination with a hatch chamber with al lower door and a door in the top thereof, movable locking pawls. mounted upon Vthe wall ofthe chamber-and adapted to lock said lower door closed, locking bolts upon the upper; d0or,`means for releasing said bolts,` a bar pivotedl to the locking pawls,`and meansactuated thereby for pre-` venting, the bolt releasing mechanism from beingi operated; when thepawls are in unlocked.` positions.
3. A safety device for doors upon hatch chambers upon-*torpedo boats, etc., comprising, in combination with7 a hatch. chamber with a lower-door and a door in the: top thereof, movable locking-'pawls mounted upon the wall of the-chamber and adapted to lock said lower door closed, spring` pressed locking bolts upon the cover havingpivotalconnection with one anotherand adapted. toy engage notches in the wall of the hatch chamber, meansupon the latter for :releasing the bolts, and meansfactuated by the pawls for preventing said releasing mechamsmibeing actuated when the pawls are 1n unlocked position.
et. A safety device for doors upon hatch in unlocked positions, to: be positioned in v the path of said releasing member to: preventfthe same Vbeingv operatedtoy release the 5. A safety device for doors upon hatch chambers: upon torpedov boats, etc., comprising7 in combination with a hatch chamber with a lower door and a door in the top thereof,- movable locking lpawls mountedf upon the wall of the chamber and adapted to lock said' lower door closed, springpressedI lockingfbolts` upon the cover having pivotal connection with one another and; adapted to engage notches. in the wall of the: hatch chamber, means upon the latter for releasing the bolts, a member having an L-shaped end which isislotted; to receive said; member, and pivotal connectionsbetween` said: member and? locking' pawls,
6.` A safety device for doors Yupon hatch chambersupon tor-.pedo boats, etc., compris-- ing, in combinationy with a hatch chamber with a lower. door and" adoor in the top Y thereof, movable lock-ing pawls mounted upon the wall ofthe chamberf andadapted toy lock' said; lower door closed', spring-'- pressed lockingx boltsA upon the cover vhavingy pivotal connection'y with one another and adapted to engage notches in the wally of the hatch chamber, means upon the: latter for releasing the bolts, amember having an L-shaped endf which-isslotted tof-receive saidzreleasing member, a bar. pivotally con-- necting the locking pawls, and pivotal linkVVV Y 'releasing pin mounted in an aperture in In testimony whereof` I hereunto affix the wall of the chamber and in alinement my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
