TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BURNHAM C. STICK- 'NEY, a citizen of the United States,'residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type Writing Machines,'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to 'typewriting machines adapted to write different languages 'm which the lines of one language are written or printed inthc reverse direction from those of the other language. In certain languages, as for example Hebrew or Arabic,
the lines of writing or printing'i'un from the right toward the left, instead from left to right as in English and other modern languages. I
In accordance with the present invention, a paper carriage may be driven in either direction, and two sets of types representing languages in which the lines of writing run 3 in opposite directions, may cooperate with letter-feeding mechanism to control the v r travel ofthe carriage, and permit a letter- V feedmovementof the carriage 1n the direction corresponding to the language being written.
.In carrying out the invention, the paper i carriage is shifted from one set of types to language, and the types of the other set comprise the characters of a language written from right to left. Means for. driving the carriage in either direction, depending upon which language is belng written, may
comprise spring drums or motors adapted to be selectively connected by draw bands to the carriage. lVhen the carriage is moved into a position to cooperate with one set of types it is automatically connected with a.
motor for driving the carriage in theletter-' feeding direction required in writing the ltng'uage represented by said types. When the carriage .is shifted to the zone of the "otherset of types it is automatically discon- .inocted from the;first motor and connected to the other motor ho be driven in" the re verse direction.

The carriage may be connected to the motors through draw bands .and hooks on the ends of the draw bands held in position to be picked up by lugs on the carriage.

In practising the invention in the form illustrated, the frameworks 1 and 2 of two Underwood front strike typewriting machines may be rigidly mounted on a common base 3 and may also be rigidly con-'- nected by front and rear carriage rails A: and 5, each of which rails extend from the left hand end of the frame 1,,to the right handend of the frame 2. A paper carriage 6, which may be an Underwood typewriter carriage of the usual construction, is mount ed for travel on the rails 4 ind 5, rolls 7 on the carriage running in a groove in the rail 4, and bearing lugs 8 or; the carriage,

\Vhen the carriage is in the righthand printing: zone. its position at the beginning of a writing: line, is determined by a margin stop 59 adjustable along a rod 60 and carrying a pointer (31 moving over a scale (can the front rail 4 to indicate the position of the stop. ,A. similar stop 63 carrying a pointer 64 moving over a seale 65, serves a like purpose when the. carria 1c is in the left.-
.hand zone. That is, in each instance the stops 59 and (i3 determ ne the position of the carriage at the beginning of a linefof writing. It will be noted that the two scales ()2 and 65 read in opposite directions. to agree. with the opposite letter-feed movements of the carriage.
Variations may hercsorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions oit the improvements may be used without others.

A twin typewriting machine comprising. two machine units connected side by side; a carriage mounted to travel from one unit to the other; key-controlled means for effecting a letter-feeding movement of the carriage in one direction during its travel across one machine unit; and key-controlled means for eflecting a letter-feeding movement of said carriage in the opposite direction during its travel across the other ma-- chine unit.

Ina typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage; of a motor connectible with the carriage to drive it in one direction; a separate motor connectible with said carriage to drivethe same in the opposite direction; escapement mechanism individual to each motor to control the drive thereof; and a set of, actuating keys individual to each escapement mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage; of a motor for-'tlriving the carriage in one direction; arrlotor for driving said carriage in the opposite direction; a key-actuated escapement mechanism individual to each motor foi? controlling the drive thereof; and means operable by the movement of the carriage to disconnect it from one motor and connect it with the other motor.

In a 'typewriting machine, the comb i nected with the carriage to drive it in one direction; a separate motor connected with said carriage to drive the same in the opposite direction; escapement mechanism individual to each motor to control the drive thereof; a set of actuating keys individual to each escapement mechanism; and means acting consequent -upon the movement of the carriage to disconnect it from one motor and connect it with the other motor. 4
