To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of TeXas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ratchet drills and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a drill in which the center support or bearing is contained) within the drill casing to prevent loss or misplacement. In drills of this character it is necessary to use a center support and frequently in applying the drill between the abutment and the work the operator drops or misplaces the center support which necessitates working for another one, particularly wherein drilling operation is in high places or over water.
It is, therefore, the object of this invention to avoid these difficulties and to provide a drill having a center support contained within the drill casing.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the ratchet head.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a cylinder or barrel having formed integrally therewith a ball head 2 -fitted within a two-part socket member constituting a base or abutment for one end of the drill.
Fitted within the cylinder 1 is a center support 4l held in place by a set screw 5 and displaceable by inserting a tool through the central slot 6 extending longitudinally through the head 2. This center support is provided with the usual central socket 7 and engaged therewith is the center 8 carried upon the end of the screw barrel 9. This screw barrel is mounted within the casing or cylinder l for slight reciprocation and complete rotation, being provided with an annular groove l0 in which are itted retaining set screws 11 permitting rotation and slight reciprocation but preventing displacement. As shown, the cylinder is supplied with a reinforcing cap 12'threaded or otherwise secured upon the open end thereof and apertured to receive the barrel 9; also that the reduced inner end of the barrel has Journaled thereon an anti-friction sleeve 13 of any desired construction,
The head is indicated at la and consists of a tubular body having centrally secured thereon the feed screw 15 threaded into the screw barrel 9 as may be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1. This head carries the right and left- hand ratchet wheels 16 and 17 surrounding which is the collar 18 on the operating handle 19. The handle 19 is also provided with separate pawls 20 and 21 to engage the respective ratchet wheels so that the head may be rotated in either direction. The head, as shown, is also provided with a drill socket 22 and any suitable means may be employed for securing the drill therein. The operation of the drill is the same as ordinary ratchet drills and, therefore, needs no further description.
What is claimed is 1. In a ratchet drill, the combination, a head including a tubular body having a screw extending centrally therethrough, a screw barrel receiving the screw and having its outer end provided with a center, a cylindrical member receiving the screw barrel and the center, a center support within the screw barrel having a socket to receive the point of the center, means for removably securing the center support within the said cylindrical member and said member being provided with a central slot whereby an instrument may be inserted to remove the center through the open end of the cylindrical member when the securing means for the center have been removed.
2. In a ratchet drill, the combination, a head having a longitudinally extending tubular body and a feed screw extending centrally through and projecting beyond the said body, a screw barrel receiving the screw, said screw barrel having its outer end provided with a center having a coneshaped point, a cylindrical member having an open end to receive the screw barrel and the center point thereof, means for securing the screw barrel to the cylindrical member to permit of a slight reciprocatory movement and a complete rotary movement of the screw barrel with relation to the cylindrical member, an anti-frictional sleeve in the cylindrical member and engaging with the center, a center support removably secured in the cylindrical member and engaging with the inner Wall of the bore thereof In testimony whereof I afx my signature and having a Cone-shaped socket to receive 1n presence of tWo Witnesses.
