Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. Lace, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sylvia, in the county of Raleigh and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to railway appliances.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a device in the nature of a tool which may be employed for moving one of the rails of a track laterally of the other rail to properly position and gage the rails and which may be also employed as a jack for holding the rails and ties elevated,
while the roadbed is being tamped beneath the ties.
It is also my purpose to construct a tool of this character which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness and strength and efficiency. 1
With these and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combinationand arrangement of parts-set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.-

is a similar sectional view approximately on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the device, Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the operating member.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a substantially rcctangular'casing which-has one of its ends closed by a plate 2 which pro jects angularly beyond the opposite faces of the casing. The side members of thecasplate 2 upon the front face of the casing provides what I will term a rib 7. Formed upon the said front face at a suitable distance from the rib is a transversely arranged angularly disposed lip 8.
The bore of the casing l is adapted to receive the major portion of a draw bar 9,
the said bar having one of its faces provided with teeth 10 and its opposite face, at
its inner end, with a laterally extending finger 11, the said finger projecting through the opening 6 in the rear face 5 of the cas ing. The outer end of the bar 6 is provided with a laterally extending head 12, and oneofthe faces of said bar is provided with transversely angularly disposed lips 13 arranged a suitable distance ,-from the lateral head 12, and the straight or inner face of these lips may contact with the end of the casing when the bar is disposed in the casing to have its inner end and its finger 11 engage with the plate 2.
The widened portions or extensions 3 of the side are each provided with registering substantially T-shaped openings 14 which receive the laterally extending trunnions 15 provided upon the toothed head 16 of a socket member 17. This socket receives a handle 18, and comprises what I will term the operating member for the device. The trunnions 15 find bearings in the end walls 19 provided by the longitudinal portion of the T-shaped opening when the operating member is manipulated to force the draw bar outward of the casing, the end walls 19 being disposed nearest the plate, and the opposite end walls 20 provided by the said 'T-shaped openings 14, and which are nearest the open end of the casing, provide bearings for the trunnions when the operating member is arranged to slide the bar toward the closed end of the casing, and the trunnions may be supported between the right angular and straight walls provide'd by'the said T-shaped openings when the operating member is inactive; This construction and arrangement prevents the constant wear of the trunnions upon the bearings, and also obviates the constant engagement of the trunnions upon the bearings and injury which might thus be inflicted upon the trunnions and, as the teeth of the heads 16 are not in constant engagement with the teeth 10 of the draiv bar, the life of the teeth of both the operating member and that of the draw bar is consequently prolonged.
Pivotally secured, as at 21 and 22 respectively, between the extensions 3 of the side members of the casing, and adjacent the opposite ends thereof are oppositely disposed pawls 23 and 24 respectively. Each of the pivots 21 and 22 is projecting beyond one of the sides 3 and the said projecting portion has secured thereto a handle 25, and when either of the handles is manipulated either of the pawls 23 or 24 may be rotated to have their engaging ends disposed between the teeth 10 of the draw'bar and so lock the draw bar against movement in either direction. The pawl 23 is in the nature of an escapement having its opposite ends provided with engaging teeth, and when a weight is deposited upon the head 12 and the teeth 16 of the member 17 have been brought out of engagement with the teeth 10 of the draw bar, the said draw bar may be lowered in a step by step movement by oscillating the handle 25 to successively bring the opposite teeth of the said awl 23 into engagement with theteeth 10 o the draw bar.
v hen the device is employed as a gage both of the pawls are swung to engage between the teeth of the draw bar to hold the said draw bar locked upon the casing, and one of the rails 26 is arranged between the rib 7 and the lip 8, contacting with the rib 7, while the second rail 27 is moved to engage with either the inner face of the head 12 or the angular portion of the lip 13, it being understood that the space or distance between the lip and head is greater than the cross sectional width of the rail 27 When the device is employed for lining the rails, the rail 26 is spiked to the ties, the operating member has its trunnions arranged in the bearings 20 to draw the bar 9 inward of the casing to permit of the loose rail 27 being received between the head 12 and the lips 13. The plate 2 upon its outer face is centrally provided with a depression 2', and upon its outer face with a similar depression 2 which is disposed diametrically opposite the rib 7. These depressions are shaped to correspond with the head of a rail and are adapted to thus engage a rail when the device is employed as a track tool. The operating member is then shifted to have its trunnions arranged in the bearing 19 and is manipulated to force the bar outward of the casing until the rail 27 is moved a predetermined and desired distance-away from the rail 26. If the rail 27 is to be beneath the tie, the draw bar is adjusted to permit of the finger 11 being arranged beneath the rails, when the operating mem-' ber has its trunnions received in the bearings 19 to actuate the bar in an outward direction and elevate the rail. When the rail is properly elevated, the awl 23 is swung to engagement between t e teeth of.
the bar 9 holding the rail elevated and permitting the insertion of the roadbed beneath the ties. The device may be also em loyed for raising the trucks of cars as in icated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
From, the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, th simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a casing having a laterally extending plate closing-one end thereof, the sides of the easing having their central portion widened and projecting over one of the faces of the said casing, and the said face between the said extending sides being opened, the opposite face of the casing being rovided with a centrally arranged elongate opening, a draw bar in the casing and projecting therethrough, a lateral finger on the draw bar projecting through the elongated opening in thecasing, and the opposite face of the draw barbeing toothed, the projecting sides of the casing having alining T-shaped openings, an operating member having a toothed head which cooperates with the teeth of the draw' bar, the head of said operating member being disposed between the projecting sides and having lateral trunnions received in the T-shaped'openings, and pawls pivotally secured between the projections of the sides and spaced approximately an equal distance from the T-shaped openin and the said pawls ada ted to co-act with the teeth of the draw ar.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a substantially rectangular casing, a laterally extending plate closing one of the ends of the casing, said casing having its sides centrally widened and extending over one of the faces of the casing, said face between the widened portions of the sides being or ned, the said face, adjacent the end plr having a laterally disposed angularly .rranged lip, the o posite face be-' mg I rovided with acentrally arranged longitudinally extending opening, a toothed bar received in the bore of the casing and projecting through the open end thereof, a finger upon the bar passing through the elongated opening in the casing, theside extensions of the casing having each a centrally arranged alining substantially T- shaped opening, an operating'member including a toothed head for cooperating with the teeth of the bar disposed between the sides, the toothed end of the said operating member having laterally extending trunnions received in the T'-shaped openings,
pivoted pawl members between the side extensions and to the opposite sides of the operating member, handles for the pawl members, the outer end of the bar having a laterally extending head, and a laterally disposed angularly arranged lip upon one of the faces of the bar ad'acent the said head.
