In the operation of the machine on powders which can be mechanically mixed with.
safety, when taking the usual precautions followed when blending ordinary explosive powders, carefully determined proportions of the different powders intended to form the blend desired, are supplied from powder cans into any desired number of the receptacles, 11, by means. of the can clamp, 26, and the vibrator, 25, which is provided with a sufficient length of air hose, 25?, to permit it to be placed over any one of the receptacles. After filling all, or any desired number, of the receptacles with a properly proportioned amount of powder, calculated to give the desired blend, the scraper, 22, is lifted to its uppermost position, the hopper isrotated, and the vibrators, 13, are started simultaneously as nearly as possible, and each is adjusted to sift at the desired rate, for the purpose of depositing a great number of uniformly thin layers of powder upon the conical hopper bottom. When the receptacles are emptied, the vibrators, 13, are stopped, and the vibrator, 19*, on the supplementary blender, 19, is started. By lowering the scraper, 22, continued rotation of the hopper will cause the layered powder, the upper surface of which is indicated by the reference symbol, 30, in Fig. l, to be thoroughly broken up and mixed before lifting the valve, 6, to permit its downward flow into the bag, 18, from which it is fed into the supplementary blender, 19, in which the properly proportioned mixture is repeatedly relayered. From this blender it passes down into the can, 20, and is weighed by the scale, 20".
When operating the machine on highly sensitive explosive compounds, as, for example, percussion compounds, the method, above described, of filling the receptacles, l1, and sifting their contents into the hopper, is followed. In addition thereto, the stop valve, 31, of the liquid supply pipe, is

The process of manufacture of blended powder compounds which consists in separately sifting and depositing a plurality of dry powdered ingredients upon a moving surface, and simultaneously spraying the ingredients with a liquid as they are being layered upon the moving surface, for the purpose of intimately and safely combining the ingredients without dangerous mechanical manipulation, and thoroughly saturating them with liquid, thereby forming a non-- explosive mixture which can be safely molded into any desired form.

The combination, in a powder blending machine, of a frame; a rotary hopper supported thereon, and having a discharge outlet; a hopper cover; means for sifting powder into the hopper; an annular trough formed around the hopper and adapted to contain a sealing liquid; and a downwardly projecting circular flange fastened to the cover and extending into the trough for the purpose of forming a seal with the liquid therein.
