To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE E. HENWOOD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene- Gas Generators and Devices for Feeding Carbids, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved acetylene generator of the same general type referred to in a co-pending application of mine, application papers for which were executed of even date herewith, and wh ch was originally filed February 1, 1912, Serial No. 674,648.
The object of this invention is to provide .another and advantageous feed means, for
securing delicate and even control of the feed of carbid from the carbid chamber to the water reservoir.
In carrying out this invention, I transmit the vertical motion of the diaphragm and filling head carried thereby into a rotary motion of a valve at the lower apex of the conical bottom of the carbid chamber, so that upon a depression of the diaphragma port will be opened between the carbid chamber and a hollow tube to allow the grains of carbid to drop into the water, and upon the generation of gas creating pressure in the carbid chamber, the diaphragm will rise and rotate the valve in the opposite direction to close and stop the further feeding of the carbid.
The scope of my invention Wlll be pointed out in the claims.

As shown in the drawings, 1 is the water chamber; 2 is the carbid chamber. The carbid chamber has a conical bottom which forms the top of the water chamber. Pipes 3-4 admit gas from near the perlphery of the two chambers through the bottom of the carbid chamber leading downwardly along the bottom and ending near the apex. In the apex o the chamber is threaded a bushing 4 through a central hole of which a tubular valve 5 open at its bottom end passes. Collars 6 and 7 position the tubular valve so that its valve apertures 8 will always be in horizontal alinement with valve openings 9 in the side of valve cage 10 projecting from the central bushing upwardly into. the chamber. The tubular valve 5 is secured by a coupling 11 with a spindle 12 having a long pitch helical thread at its upper end passing into a bushing 13 fastened to the filling head 14. The bushing 13 is provided centrally with a thread to engage the upper thread end of the rod 12.
The filling head is secured fast to a diaphragm 14 of a flexible material, which is fastened at its other end to an inwardly turned rim of the carbid chamber. Springs 15 serve to hold the filling head in downward position, and to rotate the helical thread and its rod to open the port between the carbid and water chambers. The gas outlet may be provided with a pipe 16 and a safety valve 17 and a gage 18 may be provided. The filling head is closed by a simple closure cap 19 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, although there may be inserted between the filling cap and its'closure a glass vessel 20 shown in Fig. 5, into which the carbid may be supplied so as to make a visible indication to the user when the chamber is not full, and also for preventing a spilling when filling the chamber. It will be apparent that the operation of the device will be impaired if the carbid chamber should be filled so full that the springs could not. compress the diaphragm to open the valve. Such condition is not likely to occur when the glass top is used, as shown in Fig. 5.
In carrying out this invention, details of construction may be varied from those shown, and yet the essence of the invention be retained; some parts might be employed without others, and new features thereof might be combined with elements old in the art in diverse ways, although the herein described type is regarded as embodying substantial improvements over such modifications.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in. the accompanying drawingsshall be interpreted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is furthermore desired to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Subject matter shown but not claimed herein constitutes the subject-matter of claims in my copending application Serial Number 823,245, filed March 7 1914.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an acetylene gas generator, a water chamber, a carbid chamber, a valve between the two, said valve being a valve operated by rotary motion, a filling head and diaphragm between the head and the chamber, said head engaging a spindle with a helical thread and capable of a motion vertically along said spindle, whereby the valve may be rotated on a vertical movement of the head.
2. In an acetylene gas generator, a water chamber, a carbid chamber, the bottom of the carbid chamber being the top of the water chamber, and having a conical shape, its apex depending into the water chamber, a bushing fitting the apex of said bottom and carrying a valve cage having ports in the side thereof in communication with the carbid chamber, a tubular valve, open at the end thereof, passing through said valve cage and provided with a port adapted to register with the ports in said valve cage, a spindle secured to the tubular valve provided at the upper end thereof with a helical thread, means for preventing the vertical movement of the spindle and attached valve, a bushing having a helical thread engaging the threads on the upper end of said spindle, a head carrying said bushing, a flexible diaphragm, carried by said carbid chamber having secured thereto said head, means for holding said head depressed, and means for admitting gas to the carbid chamber.
8; In an acetylene gas generator, a water chamber, a carbid chamber, the bottom of the carbid chamber being the top of the water chamber, and having a conical shape, its apex depending into the water chamber, a bushing fitting the apex of said bottom and carrving a valve cage having ports in the side thereof in communication with the carbid chamber, a tubular valve, open at the end thereof, passing through said valve cage and provided with a port adapted to register with the ports in said valve cage, a
spindle secured to the tubular valve provided at the upper end thereof with a helical thread, means for preventing'the vertical movement of the spindle and attached valve, a bushing having a helical thread engaging the threads on the upper end of said spindle, a head carrying said bushing, a flexible diaphragm, carried by said carbid chamber having secured thereto said head, means for holding said head depressed, and means for admitting gas to the carbid chamber, said means for admitting gas consisting of tubes from the water chamber having their ends adjacent the ports.
4. In an acetylene generator, a water'reservoir, a carbid receptacle, a central aperture in the bottom of the carbid receptacle, a rotary feed valve controlling said central aperture, a shaft formed with a helical thread at its upper end, and connected at its lower end to the said rotary feed valve, and a vertically reciprocating head carrying a bushing having a helical thread engaging said shaft, whereby the vertical motion of the said head imparts a rotary motion to said shaft and said feed valve, a means for preventing a vertical movement to the shaft, and a means for filling the carbid receptacle with carbid.
5. In an automatic acetylene generator,
the combination of a carbid receptacle having'a feed aperture in its bottom, a water reservoir, a hollow rotary feed valve mounted to rotate about its axis concentric with the feed aperture, a vertical rotary shaft secured to said valve, a diaphragm and head movable under the action of the generated gas, and a connection between said head and shaft whereby the vertical movement of the former is converted into rotary movement in the latter. 1
6. In an automatic acetylene generator, the combination of a carbid receptacle, a water reservoir, a laterally ported valve cage, a hollow rotary laterally ported valve turning in said cage to control the feed of carbid from the carbid receptacle to the water'reservoir, a member movable vertically under the action of the generated gas,and'means whereby rotary movement of said feed valve results from vertical movement of said memher.
7. In an automatic acetylene generator, the combination of a carbid receptacle, a water reservoir, apart movable vertically under the action of the gas, a hollow carbid feed device rotatable about its axis, and means connecting said feed device with said vertically vmovable part, said means comprising a shaft and a helical connection whereby the vertical movement vof said-part produces rotary movement of the feed device, the latter being held against vertical movement. 7
