FENCE POST. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 19. 1915.

FENCE-POST.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916.
Application filed. August 19, 1915. Serial No. 46,267.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES SLYFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chaseville; in the county of Duval, State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved metallic fence post, and a replaceable or renewable fiber or wood filler, whereby wire fences may be attached thereto.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a fence post of this nature, in which improved features of construction are involved.
One of the features of construction is the provision of a metal fence post stamped or otherwise constructed out of sheet metal, and preferably made angular in cross section, for the reception of a renewable fiber or wood filler bolted to the post, and to which filler the wire fence may be spiked or stapled in the usual manner.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the fence post constructed in accordance with the invention, and. showing the fence wire connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the fence wire bent on an angle, in other words at right angles, so as to make a corner in constructing a wire fence.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a metallic fence post, which is angular in cross section, and is constructed in any suitable manner from sheet metal, so as to form a cavity 2 angular in cross section and extending the full length'of the post. This cavity is open at both ends of the post, as shown. The sides 3 of the post at their lower ends are tapered ofl' as shown at l, so that the post may be easily driven in the ground. If desired, however, the lower end of the post may be embedded in a concrete or stone foundation, not shown, in which case the angular construction of the post will prevent the same from turning. Even when the post is driven into the ground, the angular construction of the same will prevent the post from turning. The upper portion of the cavity 2 is designed for the reception of a fiber filler 7, which is correspondingly shaped in cross section, to fit the angular cavity. This fiber or wood filler is bolted in the cavity by the bolts 8 having the nuts 9. It will be observed that the outer face of the filler may be any desired shape, suitable to accommodate the wires of the fence. For instance, in using the post at a corner of a fence, the outer face of the filler may be curved, as shown at 10, in order to accommodate the fence wires 11, when disposed to make the corner of the fence, in order to prevent a decided bend in the wire, which, in time, will cause the wire to break at such decided bend. In other words, the fence wire when strung on a filler of this character in making the corner, is curved, thereby preventing a decided bend.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the filler, is provided with flanges 12 overlying the edges 13 of the sides of the metal post, and these flanges are curved as shown at 14:, so that a wire of the fence may be curved or bent, so that its opposite portions will be at acute angles to each other, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The fence wires are secured to the filler by means of the staples 16.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 2- In improvements in fence posts of the kind set forth, the combination of a fence post body consisting of two flanges extending at right angles to each other in cross section and being constructed of sheet metal and a cavity in said body formed by said flanges, of a wood filler angular in cross section corresponding with and fitting said cavity, and which filler can be fastened in the recess whereby the fence wires may be held a proper distance above the ground, the opposite parallel longitudinal vertical corners of said filler having flanges overlying the edges of the flanges of the angular body and extending beyond the body, thereby preventing the fence wires from contacting with the edges of the flanges of said body, the outer face of the wood filler being curved in cross section, which curvature extends from one extreme edge of one flange of the filler to the extreme edge of the opposite flange with which the fence wires en- In testimony whereof I have signed my gage to prevent a declded bend 1n the wlre, name to thls speclficatlon 1n the presence of sald body having openings 1n the corner two subscribing wltnesses.
