To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES R. ll iorra'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle Clamps for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to needle holders for sewing machines, and especially to a needle clamp or holder for the needles of a multiple needle sewing machine, in which the needles are arranged oblique to each other respecting the line of feed.

The object of the invention is toprovide a simple and effective needle-clamping device for accurately adjusting and rigidly holding the needles in a multiple needle sewing machine, and it consists.in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a needle bar with the holder and needles applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 2.

In these drawings, the needle bar is shown at 1, and has its lower end formed with a central opening to receive the shank or upper end of the central needle 2, this needle being clamped in position by the screw 3, the end of which is threaded into the threaded opening through one side of the needle bar, the head of said screw being countersunk into the collar 4, which is clamped to the needle bar by the screw 5. This collar 4 fits on the lower end of the needle bar, being adjustably held thereon by the clamping screw 5, and has vertical openings to receive the shanks of the other needles 2, these needles being clamped in place by the screws 6 threaded into the collar. A plate 7 surrounding the needle bar and screwed to the collar 4 by screws 8, serves as an abutment for the upper ends of the outer needles, and insures their being set at the proper height. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

1. In combination with the needle bar, a collar Clilll'lPGCl thereon having recesses for the needle shanks, recesses extending horizontally into said collar arranged at an angle to a line joining the needles, and claur ing screws secured in said recesses and bearing upon said shanks, and a plate on top at said collar and secured thereto against which the upper ends of the shanks abut.

2. In combination with the needle bar, a collar clamped thereon having recesses for the needle shanks, recesses extending horizontally into said collar arranged at an angle to a line joining the needles, clamping screws secured in said recesses and bearing upon said shanks, and a plate on top ot' said collar and secured thereto, against which the upper ends of the shanks abut, said i'ieedle bar having a central vertical recess to ceive the shank of a needle, and a screw haring its inner end threaded through the neodle bar and bearing on said shank.

3. The combination of a needle bar having a vertical recess in its lower end for the reception of a shank of a needle, a needle clamping collar on the lower end of the new dle bar, means for clamping the shank of the needle in the recess in the needle bar, means for clamping said collar to said needle bar, said clamping collar being provided with needle holding recesses upon opposite sides of the needle bar, clamping devices for holding the needles in said recesses, said clamping devices being arranged so to operate at an angle to a line joining the nec dle recesses and a plate on top of said collar and secured thereto against which the upper ends of the shanks of the needles passing through the clamping collar abut.
