The characteristic features of our im proved mechanism are fully disclosed inthe following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.

A gear wheel 25 is fixed on the shaft 24 and engages a gear Wheel 26 fixed on a clutch 26', the parts 26 and 26 being loosely mounted on the journaled shaft 27. A pinion 30 fixed to the Wheel 26 engages the raclr'Rlf czilthelta-ble 3 to reciprocate the latter.
A clutch 27 is splinedfon the shaft 27 and is adapted to he yshifted longitudinally revoluble in reverse directions by fixing thethereon by a rod 28 which is adapted to reciprocate Within the shaft and s connected with the clutch by the pin 28', the latter being movable in a slot 27 of the shaft. A hand wheel 29 is fixed on the shaft 27 and serves, through the dependent mechanism, to effect an independent operation of the table 3.
The arm 2l is fixed on a journaled shaft 30 which has fixed thereon an arm 31. This arm is connected by a link 32 with a lever 33 having a fulcrum 33.A A rod or link 34, which is pivotally connected at its opposite ends to an oscillating arm 35 and a lever. 36, has lugs 34 thereon which lie on either side of the lever 33 so as to permit it a limited independent movement with respect to the lever The lever 36 coacts with a detent 37 which is pressed by a spring 37', the
lever being movable past the detent by de-A pressing the latter against the action of the spring and being thrown when past the dead center position by the action of the spring through the detent.
A striker 3 on the slide 3 of the table 3 is adapted to engage, on the rearward movement thereof, the lever 33 which is rocked th^reby to operate the link 32 and throw the clutch sleeve 20 to the neutral position, the link acting on the sleeve through the intermediate parts 31, 30 and 21.
A bearing 38 on the slide 3 has journaled vtherein a shaft 39 on which is fixed a lever 40 provided with a striker 40 and a roller 40, the striker being adapted for engaging the projections 34 fixed to and adjustable on'the link 34 and the roller being adapted for enga ing a cam 41 fixed to and adjustable on t 1e way 41. lVhen, by the rearward movement of the slide 3, the striker 40 engages the right projection 34, the link 34 and the lever 36 are shifted thereby to the position shown in Fig. 1. That is to say, the lever is forced past the detent 37 by pressing it down against the spring 37 and is thrown and retained in the position to which it is thrown by the rise of the detent, the movement effecting the further movement of the link 34 and engaging the clutch sleeve 20 with the clutch 23 by the action of the link through the parts 33, 32, 31, 30 and 21. The movement of the slide 3 in the opposite direction causes the striker A40 to engage with the left projection 34, whereby the link 34 is shifted and acts through the parts 33, 32, 31, 30 and 21 to shift the clutch sleeve 20 into engagement with the clutch 22., the detent 37 acting on the lever 30 \vhen"past the vdead center position to effect the full throw of the mechanism. In the movement of the \`slide 3', as the striker 40 travels between the projections 34, the roller 40 engages the inclined surface of the cam41, which rocks the lever 40, thereby turning the 'shaft 39. This movement of the shaft 39 rocks an arm 50 fixed to the bearing .cylindrical sleeve 46".

The rod 43 is provided with the slotted clevis 43 which' is loosely engaged with a dog 44 through a pin 44 thereon, the clevis having a limited movement independent of the pin.
The dog 44 is adapted for engaging a projection 45 fixed to the roller clutch cag.. 45, and is provided with a `lug 44 to be engaged by a lug 46 on the plate 46 to disengage the dog from the projection and with the roller 46b for engaging the lug to throw the dog back into position for rengaging the projection.
'lhe roller 46" is made adjustable on the plate 46 by providing the latter with the circular T-slot 46', ,in which is engaged a T- bolt 46" having the roller journaled thereon.
A peripheral cam 46 on the plate 46 is adapted for engaging a cam 51 on a lever 51 which is thereby caused to enga e the clevis 43 to move the rod 43 longitu in the direction of the arrow. Thus the arm 42 and lever 40 are rocked so that the striker 40' is moved out of line with the projections 34, the arm 424 being thrown from the position shown in Fig. 10 in the direction of the arrow and held by the detent 44 in its second position.
The plate 46 is fixed to a sleeve 46, which is journaled in a bearing 3a of the table 3 and revolved by a pinion 47 fixed thereon. A shaft 48 is journaled in the sleeve 46 and revolved by the clutch cage 45 which is fixed thereto, the shaft having fixed thereon a planetary gear cage 48. A stub shaft 48" is carried by the cage 48 and has jo-urnaled thereon the connected' differentials 49 and 49', the latter meshing with the pinion 47 and the former engaging a stationary gear 3 concentric with the The pulley 52, loose on the shaft 48, is engaged thereto by the roller clutch mechamsm comprising the part 45, and is driven inally n by a belt 53 passing over the shaft '7 andiI l movable along the same with the longitudinal recprccation of the grinding table 3.
The sleeve 46l has lixed thereon two cams 54 and 55 on which ride the arms 56 and 57' of the levers 56 and 57.
A slide 58 is movable on a way 3" of the table by a spring 59 which is connected with the table byl'a bolt 60 and bears against al lug 58 on'the slide, the movement of the lslide being regulated by the lever 56 whose arm 56 engages an adjustable stud or screw 58 on the slide, and the`v movement of the lever being regulated by the engagement of its arm 56 with the periphery ofthe cam 54.

The spindles 2, 2 and 2 are revolved by the pulley S0 through the. shaft 80, clutch T9, and spur wheel 81 which drives a spur wheel 93 that is loose on the journaled shaft 94 and adapted to be fixed thereto by the roller ratchet 95.
The shaft 94 acts through thespur wheel 9G fixed thereon to drive '1t spur wheel 97 fixed on a shaft 98, the latter having fixed thereon a sprocket wheel 99 which acts through a chain 10() to fili-ive a sprocket wheel 101 fixed on the journaled shaft 102.
A spur wheel 103 is fixed on the shaft 102 and engages the gears 104, 104 and 104 on the respective work spindles 2, 2, and 2, the gears on the spindles being automatically fixed thereto by respective roller clutches 105, 105, and 105". These clutches are respectively kprovidedwith -lugs 105, adapted to be engaged, successively as the turret is intermittently revolved, by a, dog 10G, so that the4 spindle to which work is being applied shall remain stationary while the others revolve the work held thereby in engagement with the grinding wheels 5 'and 5.
The shaft 94 has a double clutch sleeve 109 splined thereon and movable into engagement with the clutch 110 on the spur wheel 110 and the clutch 111 on the spur wheel 111 alternately, the sleeve being shifted by means of a crank 112 having a yoke 112 which engages the sleeves channel 1,09.
The wheels 110 and 111 mesh with the respective spur wheels 113 and 114 fixed on the shaft 80.
When it is desired to increase the speed of revolution of the work spindles 2, 2 and 2" beyond that obtained by the described action through the wheel 93, the crank 112 Y is operated to engage the ' wheel 110 or 111 to the shaft 94, depending upon, the particular speed desired, and this shaft is thereby revolved at a speed -greater than that otherwise transmitted through the wheel 93' so that the latter now revolves idly, since its clutch 95 will not engage.
It willA be understood that the grindin wheels 5 and 5 are reciprocated in the wor by a limited reciprocation of the table 3 .through the automatic action of the mecha- Y nism, for, as has been shown, as the table reciprocates its movement is ysto ped and reversed by communicating the tab es movements through the parts 34, 33, 32, '31, 30
and 21 to the driving clutch sleeve 20, to reverse its connections. 'y
In both the forward and rearward movements of the table 3, the engagement of the roller 40 with the cam 41 operates the levers 40 and '42, applies tension to the rod 43, withdraws the dog 44. from the projection 45, permits they corresponding clutch mechanism 45 to engage the shaft 48 to the pulley 52 and causes the shaft to ,intermittently operate the sleeve 46 with the cam plate 46 thereon, through the planetary train 48', 49, 50, 49 and 47, the cam plate being advanced a step by each reciprocation Y of the table and the dog 44 being automati-v callyv actuated by a spring 44b to rengage the projection 45', disengage the clutch and restore the parts 43, 42, 39, 40, 40' and40 to normal position. After the necessary' limited reciprocations of the table or carriage 3, the intermittently turning cam plate 4G causes the engagement of its cam 46e with the cam 51', rocks the lever 51, shifts the rod 43 in the direction of the arrow thereon, and throws the levers 42 and 40 so that the striker 40 is moved out of line with the projections 34, the mechanism being held in this position by the engagement of the detent 42 with the arm 42 in the second position to which it has been shifted.r The table/3 is thus permitted to continue its rearward movement until the rojection 3 contacts with the arrn 33 and t rows the clutch 20 to its neutral position. In a grinding machine, a revoluble turret, mechanism comprising a clutch for driving said turret, and means whereby said clutch is automatically disengaged and saidturret is stopped in predetermined posi? tions, said means comprising an oscillating dog for disengaging said clutch, an oscillating arm fixed to said dog, a cam on said -turret with which said arm is adapted to e11- gage, a reciprocating bolt for engaging said turret, and means connecting said bolt with said dog and arm.

turretprovided with a cam, mechanism comprising an automatically actingclutch for revolving said turret and means whereby said clutch is automatically disengaged and said turret is held in predetermined positions, said means comprising an oscillating dog for acting on said clutch, an oscillating device fixed to said dog and adapted to register with said cam, and locking device for holding said turret,` and means connecting said locking device with said oscillating device and dog whereby their actions are co ordinated.

means comprising an arm connecting said shaft and device last named for disengaging said turret.

In a grinding machine, a reciprocating carriage, a reciprocating slide movable on said carriage transversely to the movement thereof, a spindle journaled in said slide, a grinding wheel on said spindle, means for regulating the movement of said slide, means comprising automatically operated reversing devices for effecting a limited reciprocation of said carriage", and means for periodically shifting reversing devices afore- Said and effectinga fuller movement of said carriage.

In a grinding machine, a Work holder, a carriage adapted to reciprocate to and from said holder, a slide adapted to reciprocate on said carriage transversely to the direction of movement thereof, a spindle -journaled in said 4slide transversely to the movement thereof, a wheel carried by said spindle for grinding work carried by said holder, means comprising controlling devices for reciprocating said carriage, and means for regulating the movement of said slide in cordination to the action of said controlling devices.
