CAR-BODY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Original application filedil'une 9, 1915, Serial No. 32,998. Divided and this application filed November 18, 1915. Serial No. 62,083.
hereby declare the following to be a full,v
clear, and exact description of the invenuse the same.
My invention relates particularly to mine and similar cars, with particular reference to those made of metal, whereby a light, strong, economical and convenient car is produced.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a car body of simple, but at the same time, light form of construction which shall be stiff enough to carry the lading, and one which is so fashioned that a part of the car floor serves as a center sill to transmit bufling and pulling stresses and at the same time gives strength and stiffness to the car floor and the body thereof to enable it to transmit the weight of the lading to the axles and Wheels without undue deflection. My invention also relates to other portions of the construction, as will hereinafter more fully appear. a
This application is a division of an application filed June 9th, 1915, Serial No. 32,998, entitled Mine car.
Referring now to the sheet of drawings annexed hereto and which forms part of these specifications: Figure 1 is a top plan view of my mine car showing the entire car body formed from one piece of metal, including the centralembossed or struck up portion and Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of my car; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional elevation taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2.
-Referring now to the characters of reference on the drawings, the car floor is indicated as 1, while the center sill, which is formed of channel, or inverted trough-shape extending longitudinally of the center of the car floor, is indicated as 2, the sides of the car are indicated as 3', the upper portions of which flare outwardly, and 4 is the flanged or beaded top edge of the car sides,
which forms a neat finish and at the same time stiflens the structure and prevents the deformation which might otherwise occur, due to impact of lumps of coal, shocks due to knockin shovels or bars thereon, or in fact anything which might distort the edge of the body. 7 I x As illustrated in the figures, the end 'plates of the car body are indicated as 5,
which are formed integral with the bottom and sides of the car. This may be done by pressing a single metal plate between dies, by welding or in fact any method whereby the whole car body is shaped without the use of rivets, bolts, etc. The. beaded top edges of the end plates are indicated as 6,
while 7 is the axle casing on which the body is mounted and which contains the car axles and bearings, which casings are secured to the car body by the straps 8 and the connections as shown. The car wheels are indicated at 9, 10 is the draft gear supporting plate, 11 is the draw bar or yoke of the draft rigging, 12 are the'bent forward ends of the draw bar, 13 is the bufling face of the bumper, 14: is the clevis member of the bumper, whereby it is adapted to be coupled to an adjacent car or tractor, 15 are the flanged sides of the bumper, whereby .it is attached by the rivets 16 to the draw the draft sill of the car, to which the fol lower plates for the draft rigging are secured. This inverted trough, as shown, may be formed integrally with the plate bottom or may be built up of various plates and shapes as desired. u,
Although I have described and illustrated my invention in considerable detail, I do not wish to be limited to the exact and specific details thereof, as shown and described, but may use such modifications in, substitutions for, or equivalents thereof, as are embraced Within the scope of my invention, or as pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A metallic car body formed integrally of one piece of plate, forming an open box with flaring sides and ends, the upper edge of which is turned over into a bead, thereby providing a finish and stiffener for same, the floor portion having a longitudinal trough formed integral therewith.
2; A metallic car body formed of a single plate of metal, shaped in the form of an open box with flaring sides and ends, the
central portion of the bottom being pressed upwardly into an inverted trough form, ex-
weasel tending longitudinally near the center of the car body, thereby providing .a combined stiffener and center sill for the same.
3. A car body formed integrally from one plate of metal of open box form, with flaring sides, the center portion of the plate bottom being formed upwardly into an inverted trough shape, extending longitudinally of the car, the upper edges of the sides and ends being turned over into a bead, thereby providing a finish and stiffener for the same.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
