A is a vertical shaft centrally attached to, or mortised in the stationary bar I, and projecting upward tube B, and in which it is designed to play freely. This shaft is equipped at its upper end with a transverse stop pin m, projecting into slots a a, in the oppos te sides of the tube B, to prevent the shaft from disengaging from said tube when the same is being raised thereon. This casing, or tube B is closed at the top, and is furnished with an eye, 7, for means of attaching the same to a crane, or other mechanism, for raising or lowering.

These several parts, in combination, 0perate as follows: To catch and carry: The tube B, with the hooks C C, and rod N, attached thereto, is raised on the shaft A, by means of tackling, or other device, until the transverse stop pin m, in A, is dropped to the lowest point of the slots 00 a, in B, whereby the lower projecting catch on tures, and again raising is brought in contact with the handle 65, on the shield E, and said handle forced upward, throwing the opposite, or broad arms of both shields clear of the apertures n 12, thus permitting the hooks O C, to freely enter said apertures, catch under D at its center, and raise the same, vertically, on said shaft, which upward movement of the bar D acts reciprocally on the levers P P P P, and corresp0ndingly elevates the bar H, which in turn, draws upward the levers p p p 7), pivoted in the ends of thegripping jaws, and forces the lower points thereof inwardly upon the tongues M M, firmly gripping the object to be carried. To release the' grip, rest the object carried on the floor, or other solid surface, slack the upward tension on B, permitting it to drop on the shaft A, thereby disengaging the hooks C C, from beneath the bar D, thus permitting them to hang loosely over the sides of the bar G. This downward movement of B relieves the upward tension on the levers P PP P, and p p p 7), attached in the manner shown, automatically releasing the grip of the jaws on the object carried. By the same downward movement of B the rod is also lowered, bringing the upper catch thereon in contact with the handle 6!, on-the shield E, carrying the arm to which said handle is attached downward, and forcing the opposite arms of both shields upward,
and underneath the lower points of the hooks, covering the apertures n n, thereby preventing said hooks re'e'ntering said aperthe bar D, when the tube B is raised, as must necessarily be done, to disengage the jaws from the object carried. r
V I am. aware that prior to my invention catch and carrying devices, tongs, etc., have been in use having the vertical shaft, levers, movable bars, or sleeves, and flaring jaws I, therefore do not claim such broadly, but
I do claim, as new, the following 1. The combination in an automatic catch and carrying machine, of the hoisting hooks C C, the movable bar D, the stationary bar G, located beneath the said bar D, and provided with receiving apertures n n, on opposite sides thereof, the casing, or tube B, provided with slots at a, therein, the stationary bar 1, vertical shaft A, the latter mortised centrally at its-base in the bar I, and having its upper end inclosed in the tube B, and equipped with the transverse stop-pin m,
'at its upper end, projecting into said slots in said tube, with the horizontal bars D and H, acting vertically on said shaft, the stationary bars G and I, the rod N, provided With two catches, the shields E, and E manipulated by said rod N, by means of said catches thereon, in contact with the knob, or handle (Z, on the smaller arm of said shield E, the stationary bars K K, centrally attached to the ends of said bar I, and at right angles thereto, the gripping jawsJ J J J, pivoted in the ends of said bars K K, the tongues M M, mortised in said bars K K, the systems of levers P P P P, and p 19 ;0 p, the first pivoted to the bars G H and D, the latter to the bar H, and the upper endsof said jaws, all as substantially herein described.

The combination in an automatic catch and carrying machine, of the blocks F F, and the shields E, and E the manipulating rod N, provided with upper and lower catches, in juxtaposition to the handle cl, on the smaller arm of said shield E, for manipulating, said shields, 'E, and E with the hooks C C, the stationary bar G, having the apertures 92 n, for the reception of said hooks, the bar D, tube B, and vertical shaft A, all as herein particularly set forth.
