GARBAGE-DISPOSAL APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NGV, "j, 1916.
i lieved to a maximum extent weaves.
Application filed January 26, 1916. Serial No. 74,291.
To all w hom t may concern Be it known that I, Nuns C. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of lVisc-onsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Disposal Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for garbage disposal and is more particularly directed to the provision of a garbage receptacle provided with means for flushing the garbage whereby a certain amount of soluble garbage and the more finely divided particles of garbage may be conveyed away bv sewerage and whereby the garbage is reof the obnoxious products of decomposition.
It is the object of the present invention to provide such a garbage disposal apparatus which may be associated with a residence and which is adapted to be flushed by a suitable drain pipe associated with such residence. and preferably the drain pipe of the kitchen sink whereby particles of garbage or other waste material from the sink may be deposited in the garbage receptacle, and further whereby the garbage receptacle by forming a drainage means for the sink may dispense with the usual sink drain which has a well known tendency to become clogged by waste particles.
A further object resides in the provision of means for conveying fumes from the garbage receptacle.`
A still further object resides -in the provision of a garbage disposal apparatus of the class described which is capable of ready and etlicient-J operation and easy manipulation and which is of such simple structure as to permit its installation at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, arrangement and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: the figure is an elevational view showing disposal apparatus installed with relation to a kitchen sink.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates the the improved garbage 4 floor line of a kitchen and 6 preferably designates the floor line of the basement or cellar., A sink 7 is shown in its usualirelation to the floor line and a chimney flue or other air passage is designated at 8 within the said basement or cellar'.
The garbage receptacle comprises a cylindrical casing 9 disposed adjacent the iue and having its bottom in inverted conical shape and connected with a drain pipe 10 which extends to the sewer. An annular chamber is formed at the upper portion of the inner periphery of the casing 9 vby an annular plate 11 .having its edge portions outwardly offset and secured to the said casing, and extending from this chamber is a rent duct 12 communicating with the flue S. The receptacle proper comprises a cylindrical body 13 having its lower portion and its bottom perforated to permit drainage therethrouglnthis bottom being in inverted conical. shape to facilitate such drainage.
' The receptacle body is suspended in the casing by a circumscribing flange portion 1a at its upper end which rests on the shoulder formed by the upper offset edge of the plate 11. Adjacent portions of the plate 11 and the receptacle 18 are provided with series of openings 15 which are in alinement when the receptacle is disposed in the casing so that the fumes arising from the garbage will pass outwardly of the receptacle into the said chamber formed by the plate 11 and from thence through the duct 12 into the iiue S, the level of these openings being above the level of the discharge of the drainage pipe leading from the sink which will later be described, whereby tendency of said fumes to escape through this drainage pipe is reduced to the minimum.
A drainage pipe 16 depends from the usual outlet of the sink and this drainage pipe is preferably oiset from the axis of the receptacle proper and communicates therewith by a pipe section 17 having its end portions relatively oset, the upper end portion of this pipe telescopically receiving the lower end of the drain pipe 15 and the lower portion of this pipe 17 being adapted to project into the receptacle 13 and carrying a closure plate 18 for said receptacle. A handle 19 is carried by the pipe section 17 to provide for raising and lowering the lid 18 to permit introduction of garbage into the receptacle and to provide for the removal of the receptacle upon its becoming filled, the pipe section 17 may be raised and then rotated on the drain pipe l5 to dispose its lower portion to one side of the receptacle.
Thus an efficient and readily installed de- Y vice is provided which will eliciently perform the functons set forth.. All of the fluid passing from the sink will lilter through the garbage and' thus tend to cleanse the same from the obnoxious products formed by decomposition and will carry away the soluble and more finely divided particles of garbage whereby the remaining garbage may be economically handled, and will be freed from the usual unpleasant features attendent upon the handling of garbage. Small particles of garbage may pass directly from the sink through the drain pipe into the receptacle, and thus by eliminating the usual drain pipe of the sink, the
objectionable tendency to Vclogging of the.
sinlrris obviated.
While the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be readily understood that under various conditions it may be desired to modify the construction of the receptacle structure, and various other features of the invention, and it is obvious that these modifications may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A garbage disposal apparatus comprising an outer casing, a drain member for said casing, a receptacle detachably positioned in the casing and spaced from the wall thereof, the lower portion of said receptacle being perforated and the upper portion'of the receptacle'being provided with a series of openings, an annular partition in the outer casing between saidl series of openings and the perforated portion of the receptacle, an air duct extending from the outer casing above said partition and a drain pipe extending into the receptacle and terminatng below the level of the said series of openings in the upper portion thereof.
2. A garbage disposal apparatus comprising a receptacle, a drain eXtending from said receptacle and a drain pipe extending substantially vertically above the receptacle, and comprising an upper section and a lower section having its upper portion slidable telescopically engaging the upper section and having its lower portion offset to engage in the receptacle, and a receptacle cover carried by the lower offset portion whereby upon lift-ing the lower section and rotating it with respect to the upper section, the cover will be disposed laterally of the receptacle. Y
3. A garbage disposal apparatus comprising an outer casing, a drain at the bottom of the casing, an annular plate disposed in the upper portion of the casing and provided with av series of perforations, outwardly directed fianges at the edge portions of saidplate secured to the casing and forming therewith and with the plate, an annular chamber, a receptacle adapted to fit within the annular plate, said receptacle lnuf'ing its lower portion perforated and having provided at its upper portion with a series of openings, adapted to aline with t-he openings of the plate, an air duct extending from the said annular chamber and a drain pipe extending into the receptacle and terminating below the level of the said series of openings at the upper portion thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
