The end-wise displacement of the mattress carriages 5, 5, and the simultaneous elevation of the discharge vessel 14 into position for use by the patient is accomplished by means of handles or levers 19, 19, provided preferably on each side of the bed within the patients grasp and attached to opposite ends of a transversely, arranged control shaft journaled at opposite ends in depending apertured supports 21,21, fixed to the inner side of the side-bars 1, 1, the rotation of the shaft being regulated preferably bv means of adjustable spring clamps 22, 22, secured to the underside of the side-bars 1, 1, and provided with adjusting thumbscrews 23, 23, etc., for regulating the tension exerted by the clamps upon the shaft 20. Said shaft 20 carries centrally a fixed pinion adapted to mesh with a rack mounted to move lengthwise in a channel-block 26 carried on the underside of a plate 27 secured to the forward cross-bar 3 and'proj ecting forward under the forward stretcher 4, said plate 27 being herein shown as laterally provided with dependent apertured shoulders 28, 28, for the reception of the shaft 20. Asshown, the forward end of the rack 25 is provided with a U-head 29, which is connected at opposite ends to the middle of the central or longitudinal bar 9 of the mattress carriages 5, 5, on each side of the.
bed by means of pivotally secured thrust- 'bars 30, so.
As shown, automatic adjustable covers 31, 31,-are provided to cover the vessel 14 when not in use-to prevent the escape of any offensive odors therefrom. Said covers 31, 31, are constructed of metal plates normally positioned over and extending across the top of the vessel 14, the inner edges of the covers being arranged to engage each other cen- V trally of the vessel, and are slidably mounted at opposite ends to lateral arms 32, 32, etc, provided at a predetermined angle on the inner edge of the hangers 17, 17 etc. said arms 32, 32, being connected together by rods or bolts 33, 33, etc, provided at opposite ends thereof and projecting through upturned slottedflanges 34, 34, etc., provided at opposite ends of the covers 31, 31, and extending from points near the inner margin of the covers across the same and projecting beyond the outer margin thereof. In alinement with the lateral arms 32, 32, and on the opposite sides of the hangers 17, 17, are shown additional lateral arms or ex tensions 35, 35, etc., which are slotted to receive bolts 36, 36, for projection therethrough, the outer ends 0 the bolts being arranged to support the slotted ends of the pull- bars 37, 37, pivoted at their lower ends to depending lugs 38, 38, etc., provided at the corners of the plate 15, said bolts 36, 36, being projected through suitable closed transverse apertures 39 provided at the outward extremities of the flanges 34, 34, of the covers 31, 31, and beyond the slots therein and, operating to push said covers inward, restoring them to normal position over the vessel 14 when the action of the shaft 20 is reversed by the operator.
The vertical movements of the vessel 14 and the elevator or plate 15 upon which it rests are guided by means of two vertically arranged fixed tongues 40, 40, secured at their upper ends centrally to the cross-bars 3, 3, of the bed frame, said tongues 40, 40, being arranged to operate between parallel shoulders 41, 41, etc., formed on the outer side of the flanges 16 of the plate 15.
The discharge vessel 14 ispreferably provided with a grip or handle 42, by which it may be removed after use. A lip or stop 43 is shown on one side of the plate 15 to properly aline the vessel when being replaced thereon after use. A flag or indicator 44 is also shown on opposite sides of the bed to indicate to an attendant that the discharge vessel should be removed. Said flag is provided with a stem 45 which projects through a suitable transverse openingprovided in the side-bars 1', 1, of the bed frame and arranged to be moved outward .by engagement with a depending stop 46 provided on the I 30, 30, forcing the carriages 5, 5, and matp tress sections 13, 13, apart and exposing the discharge vessel 14, which is synchronously elevated on the plate 15 through themedium of the hangers 17 17. As the plate 15 rises and the hangers 17,17, are spread apart, the 1 covers 31, 31, are withdrawn from position over the vessel lt and are free to drop downward on the lateral arms 32, 32, by gravity. Owing to the tension exerted on the shaft 20 by theclamps 22, 22, etc., the vessel 14 Will remain at any given elevation and consequently rest at its upper limit of movement until the action of the handle 19 is reversed, at which time the reverse of the action of the parts operated as previously described thereupon occurs. As above stated, during the reverse movement of the handle 19, the covers 31, 31, are forced back into normal position over the vessel 14 by the inward movement of the bolts 86, '36, connecting the outer ends of the pull- bars 37, 37. The flags or indicators H, as, may be readjusted by hand when necessary by an attendant.
It may be observed that the mattress sections 12, 12, 13, 13, are intended to be provided with separate slips or covers, as the use of a single sheet under the patient covering the entire area of the mattress Would cover the opening provided between the mattress sections 13, 13, When moved apart as hereinbefore described.
I claim 1. In a bed of the character described, the combination with a bed frame of open structure, a mattress support carried on the frame and having a closable transverse opening therethrough, a mattress carried on the mattress support and having a closable transverse opening over said opening in the mattress support, and a receptacle detachably secured to the frame and disposed normally below the location of said openings in the mattress and mattress support, of means for opening the mattress and mattress support to receive said receptacle, said means operating to synchronously elevate the receptacle into position for use.

In a bed of the character described, the combination With a bed frame of open structure, a mattress support carried on the frame and having a closable transverse opening therethrough, a mattress carried on the mattress support and having a closable transverse opening over said opening in the mattress support, and a receptacle detachably secured to the frame and disposed normally below the location of said openings in the mattress and mattress support, of means for opening the mattress and mat tress support to receive said receptacle, and for synchronously elevating the receptacle into-position for use, said means being operable to close said openings in the mattress and mattress support and to synchronously restore said receptacle to its original position.
3. In a bed of the character described,
the combination With a bed frame of open structure, a mattress support carried on the frame and including relatively adjustable members arranged centrally thereof for providing a closable opening through the mattress support, a mattress carried on the mattress support and comprising a plurality of independent sections, a portion of Which sections are movable with said adjustable members of the mattress support, and an adjustable receptacle disposed under the frame adjacent the closable opening in the mattress support, of means operable by the occupant of the bed for simultaneously spacing the said adjustable members of the mattress support to provide a transverse opening through the bed, and elevating the receptacle into said opening for use.
a. In a device of the class described, a frame of open structure, a mattress support carried on the frame, a mattress carried on the mattress support, means for providing a closable opening through the mattress and mattress support, a receptacle secured to the frame and disposed under said closable opening, an adjustable cover for covering the receptacle, and means secured to the frame and operable by the occupant of the bed for synchronously providing an opening through the mattress and mattress support, elevating said receptacle into said opening for use, and Withdrawing the cover from the receptacle, said means including means to restore said adjustable members to their original positions.
5. In a device of the class described, a frame of open structure, a mattress support carried on the frame, a mattress carried on the mattress support, means for providing a closable opening through the mattress and mattress support, a movable support secured to the frame and disposed under said closable opening, a receptacle carried on said movable support, a covering provided over the receptacle, means operable by the occupant of the bed for elevating and lowering said receptacle and receptacle'support, including means operable by said receptacle adjusting means for synchronously Withdrawing said covering from its normal posi tion over the receptacle When the receptacle is elevated toward said closable opening and restoring said covering to its normal position When the receptacle is Withdrawn from said opening.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
