Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL Bnlalorrnn, Jr., a. citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Razor strop-Hones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in razor blade sharpeners and the same has for its objects more particularly to provide a simple, efiicient, and reliable device so constructed that should any of its parts become worn or broken they can be easily replaced, rather than buying another complete device- The object of my invention is to provide a combination strop hone, one in which the strop may be adjusted to suit various styles of blades, as it is a known fact that different thicknesses of razor blades require certain different conditions of the strop in order to secure the best edge upon the blade, for example a thick blade requires a rather loose strop, whereas a thin blade requires a tight or stilf strop.
Another object of my invention is that the strop may be easily and readily removed, so in case of the same becoming broken, worn or damaged to such an extent as to be useless, it can be replaced by another new one.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation, the right hand side of which is shown in section to more clearly illustrate the various connections between the hone, support and strop; Fig. 2 is a top plan, partly broken away to show the adjustable means upon the hone; Figs. 3 and 4 are modifications, showing a slightly different form of the sliding connection between the strop support and the hone, Fig. 3 being a side elevation and Fig. 1 a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction as indicated by the arrow, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 Fig. 1 as seen looking in the direction of the arrow. In the drawings, 1 designates a honing stone of ordinary construction, only that the same is provided with cylindrical recesses 2-2 arranged in opposite ends, and located within these recesses are socket members 3-3 which fit very snug or tight and are provided with a smooth longitudinal central bore 3-3 which forms a bearing for the adjustable support to be hereinafter described. On the opposite side from the working face of the hone are arranged two adjustable supporting members l i constructed as follows: Each of said members consists of a fiat body portion as indicated at 5, having downwardly extending flanges 6-6 on the longitudinal edges, said flanges arranged with relation to the hone to closely fit the same and guide the bracket in its longitudinal movements. Portions 7-7 of each of the bodies 55 are stamped out and bent downwardly at right angles thereto and centrally provided with screw threaded apertures 8-8. On the opposite sides of the body portions there are vertical webs 9-9 the upper portions of which are bent outwardly as at 10-10 then downwardly as indicated at 11-11 and finally inwardly at their extreme ends as at 12-12. In the vertical webs are a plurality of stamped out teeth which are adapted to bite into the end of the strop 12 when in position and to positively hold the strop against accidental displacement therefrom. The portions 12-12 are so positioned so as to force or hold the strop into a tortuous bend. Arranged within the socket members and operatively associated with the sliding plates through the threaded apertures are turn screws 13-13, and these screws are provided with smooth inner ends arranged within the longitudinal bores of the sockets 3-3, while intermediate their ends are external screw threads 14l14 arranged to coact with the screw threaded apertures in the body portions.
As illustrated in the modifications Figs. '3 and 4 it will be noted that the flanges of the body portions are bent inwardly as at 15-15 and are arranged to slide in grooves 16-16 in the side of the hone. By this construction the body portion is prevented from lateral movement relative to the hone but this in no way interferes with its sliding action.
The operation of my device is as follows: The knife or razor is honed in the usual way upon the hone and when it is desired to put a keen edge upon the same the strop is brought into action. The character of the blade requires certainconditions of the strop, loose if the blade is thick and tight if the same is thin. These conditions are easily attained in my improvement, by simply turning the screws which in turn force the sliding plates inwardly or outwardly according to the direction in which the screws are turned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a hone, a strop, members having a flat body portion, a flange, and a stamped out portion arranged at right angles to said body portion, said members arranged adjacent each end of the hone for supporting the strop, and means associated with said hone and 0peratively connected to the members for ad justing the said members thereby tensioning the strop.
