To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BnMIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at 26 Broadway, city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and 'usefullmprovements in Metallic Barrels, 9f which-the following is a speciicatio This invention relates to metallic barrels or other shipping and storing vessels, and in particular to such vessels which'are intended also for dispensing purposes, the primary object being the provision of a barrel the head of which has both discharge and filling bung-holes and plugs for these holes, the plug for the filling bung-holebeing provided with an 'air vent andmeans associated with the latter for preventing leakage through the vent at times ywhen the barrel is tipped on its side and the level of the liquid contents of the barrel is situated above the vent.
The ventfor dispensing barrels is usually Aprovided in a bung mounted in the side o f the barrel, but this disposition of the vent is objectionable for obvious reasons, particularly in the construction of metallic vessels. It is therefore my purpose to provide a barrel construction embodying a head vent having means associated therewith for rendering the same as efficient for the purpose ofv admitting air pressure to the interior of the barrel, while its contents are beingv disensed, as the usual side vent, and which will e free from the obj ectionabld features of the latter.
To these ends the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization, as hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a barrel constructed in accordance with the present linvention and having the plugs for the filling and discharge bung-holes applied thereto and sealed to adapt the barrel for transportation purposes; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal secltional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the barrel eXteriorly disposed operative position in solid lines land in its interiorly disposed inoperative position in dotted lines.
' Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1 designates a barrel which is constructed of some suitable metal, such as steel or the like,
and one of the heads 2 of which is con- -threaded and is provided with an angular turning head 7, is adapted to be threaded into the filling bung-hole 4 by means of a Y wrench or other suitable turning tool (not shown), the head 7 being eXteriorly disposed. A washer 8 is mounted upon the plug 6 in interposed relation to the barrel head and the turning head 7 of the plug so as to afford a tight joint. Both the inner and the outer ends of the plug are recessed as at 9 and 10 i respectively so that a comparatively thin interior wall 11 is formed. This wall 11 is provided medially with a threaded vent 12 in which the threaded end 13 of a vent tube 14 is adapted to be engaged. This tubeis provided adjacent to its threaded end with an annular limiting flange 15 for engagement with the plugl wall 11 when the said end of the tube is-tted within the vent 12. The threaded end of the tube is longer than the vent 12 and thus will project through the vent to an extent suiiicient to permit the application of closure cap 16 thereto. This cap is adapted to be applied to the said tube end only when the tube is disposed in its inoperative osition within the barrel, and then it will e countersunk within the plug recess 10. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) The said rei cess is constructed larger than -the cap 16 so as to permit the ready application of a wrench or other suitable turning tool (not shown) to the cap for the purpose of applying or detaching the same. Washers 17 and 18 rare adapted to be mounted on the threaded end 13 of the vent tube adjacent to the cap and the flange 15 respectively so as to be forced against the plug wall 11 when the cap is tightened upon the said tube end. A tight joint will thus be eected. Thevent tube is provided at its opposite end with a, lateral extension 19 which is constructed as long as possible and yet not too long to prevent its'ready insertion through the filling bunghole when applied to the inner end of the plug 6. When practicable, the said bunghole should'be constructed so large in diameter that the tube extension 19 will just clear the yadjacent side wall of the barrel when the tube is in its interiorly disposed inoperative position and the plug is rotated during the application or withdrawal of the same. The end of the tube extension 19 is exteriorly screw threaded for the application of a olosure cap 20 thereto and the clearance between the said tube end and the barrel wall should be suiicient' to prevent the cap 20 from engaging the said wall when it is applied to the tube.

A washer 23 is adapted to be'mounted upon the said-plug between its head 22 and the corresponding thick portion of the barrel head to aord a tight joint. When .the p ug 21 is extracted from the receiving bung-hole, a dispensing faucet, such as that indicated by the numeral 26 in Fig. 3 may be applied'to the said bung-hole,for use in' dispensing the contents of the barrel.
