This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for unloading or discharging the, contents of vehicles directly into bins or other receptacles, thereby eliminating the usual manual labor in effecting the transfer.
In the transportation and handling of articles or commodities in loose bulk,"such as grain and the like, it is desirable that the vehicle containing the same be discharged quickly and easily into the desired container or receptacle. While wagons with dumping bottoms may fulfil this require ment in some respects, 1t 1s not always convenient to utilize the same.
Accordingly, to provide for removingthe contents of a wagon of, the ordinary type having a removable or hinged end gate, such as are more commonly found in farm use and general drayage, the present invention contemplates a novel device having means for permitting the entire body of the wagon to tilt rearwardly to discharge its contents.
Primarily, the invention has in View the provision of a turn-table device that is mounted in a housing or, shed and adapted to be turned to any desired position to be dumped, and then turned so that the vehicle may leave the platform and thus reset the tilting section that had been released to effect the unloading. While the invention in this form is especially adapted for farm" use, in connection with the unloadingof grain and stock feed lnto bins or storage receptacles, it is susceptible to a wide range' of other uses where the distribution of wagon contents as a whole 1S des rable to save time and labor? In carrying out the present invention, it 18 proposed to construct the housing H, so
that any desired number of storage'bins B V i or receptacles may be provided. However, for the purposes of illustration the present drawings show an octagonalform of housing consisting of the outervertical frame membersLandthe inner turn-table supporting pos s or struts 2, which may be radially connected in any suitable member by means of partition walls to form receptacles of the desired height and capacity.
In order to more clearlyshow the novel features of the present invention, the roof R- of the'housing H is shown by dotted lines, and the external sidinghas been omitted. Thus, it may be observed from the several figures thatthe interior of the housing II is provided witha continuous path orfootway 3 which extends entirely around the housing, and over the bins or receptacles B. The housing H is further provided at one side with a suitable. runway 4t which permits teams or vehicles to enter the housing and be positioned on the turn-table device designated generally as T, and arranged concentrically with the bins or-receptaclesl. This turn-table device essentially includes a turn-table platform which is supported upon the plurality of transverse beams h, and the longitudinal beams 7 which carry a plurality of truck members 8 having the wheels 9. Upon the top of the centrally arranged turn-table supporting posts is secured a circular track member 10, upon which the wheels 9 the turntable bear. It will thus be obvious that the turn-table may be turned or rotated upon the trackway 10 by means of hand levers 11 secured to theopposite sides of the turntable platform 5.
One end of the turn table platform carries oppositely disposed guard members 12 form ing at protecting stall for the draft animal, and the floor of the opposite end of the platform is formed with the spaced parallel open end slots 13', which are of sufficient width to accommodate the tilting wagon supporting members 14 that are made wide enough to accommodate vehicles of slightly varying wheel gage. These tilting wagon supporting members 1% are preferably piv oted at oneside of their center as at 15 on a pivot spindle 1G journaled in the oppositely disposed longitudinal beam members 7 of the platform. Normally, these members 11 are held in such a position that their upper surface is flush with the face of the platform 5, by means of a retaining device 17. By reference to Fig. 5, it will be observedthat this retaining device 17 is in the form of a single rocking bar which is formed adjacent each end with downwardly disposedholding loops 18, normally receiving and holding the free ends of the members 1 1. This bani? is rotatably held to the platform 5 by means of suitable eyes 19 and is provided at one end with an offset handle or crank member 20. Accordingly, as the slots 13 are opened at their rear ends, and the loops 18 of the operating bar 17 engage and support the rear ends ofthe members 14 under normal conditions, it will be apparent that when the handle 20 of the operating bar is moved downwardly toward the floor of the turn-table, the loops 18 will. be swung upwardly and clear the ends of the members is thus pern'iitting the same to tilt upon the pivot 16,
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that a vehiclemay be driven onto the turntable device T, while the same is in its normal position as shown in Fig. 3, that is, when the tilting members of the platform are disposed adjacent the runway at, so that the front and rear wheels of the vehicle will both rest upon the said tilting members 14. lVhile in this position, the turn-table device is rotated so that the rear end of the vehicle is directly above a bin or receptacle into Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents which the contents of the wagon are to be discharged, and then the lever device 17 is turned by means of the handles :20 so that the rear end of the members 1 1 will be released, thus permitting the entire body of the vehicle to tiltrearwardly. After the contents of the wagon have been discharged, the turn-table may be rotated so that the front end, namely, that having the guard members 12, will be adjacent the runway i, so that the vehicle may be driven off of the platfmrm, and thus reset the tilting members -i, as the wheels thereof move to the opposite site of the pivot points 15. Thelocking bar 17 is then turned so that the loops 18 again engage the'end s of the members 1 1', relocle ingthe same in their normal position. The turn-table may be then returned to normal position, that is, so that the end thereof having the tilting members is adjacent the run way 5 and ready to receive another vehicle.
Without further description, it will be readily apparent to those familiar with the art, thatminor changes in thedetails of construction may be resorted to without depart-- ing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In anunloading apparatus, the combination of a housing comprising a framework including an outer circular series of supporting members, an inner circular series of supporting) members so arranged with respect to the outer series of supporting members as to form the framework of a circular group of storage compartments, a circular trackway mounted on said inner supporting members, and a vehicle supporting turntable device mounted on said circular trackway within the housing and concentric to said compartments.
2. In an unloading apparatus, the combiation of a housing comprising a framework including an outer circular series of supporting members, an inner circular series of supporting members so arranged with respect to'the outer series of supporting members as to form the framework of a circular group of storage compartments, an inclined vehicle runway extending into the housing, a manway supported by said outer series of supports over said storage compartments, a circular trac way mounted on said inner supporting members, and a vehicle supporting turntable device mounted on said trackway concentric to said compartments, and having load-dumping means.v
