LAMP.
Specification of Letters' Patent.
5 field, and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamps, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings repre- This invention relates to lamps, and more especially to electric lamps of the parabolic reflector type, and will be best understood by reference to the following specification,
15 when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings of one specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
longitudinal plan section of an electric lamp embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referringto the drawings, and to the embodiment of my invention which I have selected for illustration, 1 have there shown 4 an electric lamp ha ving a' casing 3, provided with a chamber 4, in which a reflector 5 is mounted. This reflector may be or" any other appropriate type, but herein is what is commonly known as a parabolic reflector, and in its center is mounted an electric bulb 6, provided with a shank or shell 7. This shank is inserted in a connection 8 extending rearwardly through an aperture 9 formed in the casing 3, the outer end of the connection serving for the attachment of a cable 10. The mode of attachment of the cable and the lamp to the connection 8 old, and well known and understood by those skilled in the art.
The lamp and its connection 8 are mount ed with relation to the reflector 5 in such the purpose of focusing the lamp, and to that end, the reflector is provided with a rearwardly extending neck 11, which is internally screw-threaded to receive an cxternal screw-thread 12 on the connection 8. The latter screw thread may be otherwise appropriately formed, but herein consists of a tubular member having a rolled thread. This member may be'secur-ed to the connection in any suitable manner, as by soldering In the'drawings: Figure 1 is a central flange 22, forming a shoulder ag insures a perfectly tight fit, t. as
a nlanner as to be capable of adjustment for- Patcnted or. 2 H9145.
Application filed August 15, 1913. Serial No. 734,863.
the same thereto.- By simply rotating the,
lamp and its connection, it 1s caused to move axially and the focus may thereby be adjusted. i
The lamp casing is herein provided with. an inner screw-thread l3 and an outer screw-tln'ead 1%, the groove of one being preferably within the ridge of the other, and the thread being preferably formed by rolling or spinning the same. The reflector 5 is herein provided with a marginal flange 15, which maybe threaded into the internal thread 13 in any appropriate manner, but herein the flange is provided with a plu rality of lugs 16 forming an interrupted thread. The reflector is provided with shoulder17, which is firmly screwed against a shoulder 18 in the lamp casing 3, and the reflector is thus firmly held in position by simply screwing the same into place, and causing its shoulder to seat against the casing.
The front of the lamp casing is herein provided with a light-transmitting element 19, in the form of a. glass mounted in a bezel or door 20, the latter being threaded onto the external threads it of the lamp casing in any appropriate manner. is provided with a plurality of lugs 21, constituting an interrupted screw-thread similar to that already described. The lamp casing is provided withalaterally i a head 23, formed on the bezel ab uding dust and moisture from the exterior of the casing. v
In assembling the lamp, the reflector is first put in place, then the lamp connection is inserted, the electric bulb is attached to its connection after which the latter is adjusted to secure the proper focus, and finally the bezel is applied by forcing it axially upon the casing. the lugs of the'bezcl slipping over the thread of the casing until the last thread is reached, when the bezel is given a partial rotation and is screwed in place, thus closing the lamp and excluding dust and moisture, while preventing the ad iustmcnt oi the lamp from being disturbed.
in connection with the hereinbefore described lamp, I may also provide a supplei-lerein the bezel. I
contrasted With the concentrated search light beam from the lamp 6.
Any suitable socket fastening may be provided for the'lamp 24, butherein substanlamp is equipped with the two lights as de-v tially the same construction is selected as that provided for the lamp 6. When the scribed, it will be understood that suitable connections are provided whereby either lamp may be cut out of circuit-when the other lamp is in use.
While I have herein shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention for illustrativepurposes, and have, disclosed anddiscussed in detail the construction and ar rangement incidental to one specific applica: tion thereof, it is to be understood that the invention is limited neither to the mere details 'or'relative arrangement of parts, nor to its specific embodiment herein shown, but that extensive deviations from the illus-. trated form or embodiment of the invention may be made, without departing from the principles thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to procure by Letters Pat cut is 1. In a lamp, the combination of a lamp casing provided with inner and outer screwthreads, the groove of one being within the ridge of the other, a reflector provided with a thread engaging said inner thread, and a bezel or door provided with a thread engaging said outer thread. I
2. In a lamp, the combination of a lamp casing provided with inner and outer screwthreads, a reflector provided with lugs engaging said inner thread, and a bezel or door provided. with lugs engaging said outer thread.
3. In a lamp, the combination of a lamp casing provided with inner and outer screwthreads and having inner and outer shoulders, a reflector engaging said inner shoulder and provided with a thread engaging said inner thread, and a bezel or door engaging said outer shoulder and provided witha thread engaging said outer thread.
'4. In alarm, the combination of a lamp casing the material thereof being distorted into inner and outer screw threads, a reflector provided with a thread engaging said inner thread and a bezel or door provided with a thread engaging said outer thread.
5. In a lamp, the combination of a lamp casing the material thereof being distorted into inner and outer screw threads, a reflector provided with lugs engaging said inner thread and a bezel or door provided with lugs engaging said outer thread.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name. to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
