THIMBLE-S'WAGING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented on. 31, rate.
Application filed. November 13, 1914. Serial No. 871,932.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM T. LYON, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Thimble-Swaging Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in thimble swaging apparatus, and the invention primarily has for its object to improve the construction of thimble swaging apparatus such as disclosed in my former Patent #595068, issued on the 7th day of December 1897, and to simplify the construction, reduce the expense of manufacture, and increase the facility of operation of the apparatus.
In its general make-up, the present apparatus includes a base or support which is adapted to be fastened down to a table or other foundation, astandard projecting up rom the base or support on which is rotatably mounted the draw plate, the same being held in place by the supporting body or column on which the plunger and operating lever are mounted. The supporting body is a vertical body in which is located the reciprocating plunger that is moved up and down by a lever pivoted to the plunger and having a pin. and slot connection with the support, the plunger being designed and adapted to receive the mandrels corresponding in size to the respective apertures in the draw plate whereby to swage thimbles of the desired size.
In its more subordinate nature, the invention includes those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device complete with the mandrel removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same showing the disk cutting attacl'iment in place on the plunger. Fig. 3 is a detail. sectional view showing the manner of cutting the disks from which the thimbles are made. Fig. 4: is a side elevation, parts being broken away showing the manner of swaging the thimbles. Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the thimbles formed by the apparatus. Fig. 7 is a detail section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, in which like letters and numerals indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 is the base to which the apparatus is secured by means of the screw 3 that is tapped into the standard 2.
l is the base block which has the chamber 5 and is bored at 6 to fit onto the standard 2 and rest on the base 1.
7 is the draw plate which is bored at 8 to be .rotatably mounted on the standard 2,
and the draw plate 7 is provided with a seprojection 12 to aline with the centers ot'the respective openings 11 when the same are brought beneath the plunger. The plunger 13, at its lower end, is provided with a T slot 1 L into which the heads 30 of the mandrels 31 are located, the slot 14 being blind at one end and opening at the front of the plunger at the other end, as best shown in Figs. 1 and i.
The plunger 13 is bored at 15 and counterbored at 16 to receive the bolt 17 and its head 18. This bolt is inserted into the plunger 13 through the opening 21 in the projec tion 12, when theplunger is up and the bolt passes through a slot 20 in the projection 12 and through a hole in the lever 22. The lever 22 is held pivotally on the bolt 17 by a nut 33 and washer 34. The lever 22 has an extension 23 which is provided with an elongated slot 24 entering from one face of the lever but not projecting entirely through the same, the slot 24 serving to receive the roller 26 and pin 25 that are carried on the support 9 thereby giving a pin-and-slot connection between the lever and the support and a pivotal connection between the lever and the plunger.
27 designates the metal plate from which the disks 28 are cut and from these disks 28 the thimbles 29 are formed in the usual manner, as will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art.
32 designates the disk cutter which is simply a cup-like member that is adapted to fit into the counterbores 11 of the plate 7 and act as a shearing plunger to punch out the disks from the metal plate 27. The disk cutter 32 is held onto the plunger 13 by friction and when not in use is removed so as to permit the mandrels 31 to be employed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Nhat I claim is:
1. In a dental appliance, a base, a support mounted on said base, a draw plate, said support having a vertical bore, a plunger mounted in said bore, said support having a slot in one side communicating witlr said bore, said support having an aperture in the other side in transverse alineinent with the top of said slot, said plunger having a bolt hole, a bolt adapted to be passed through said aperture to lie with its head in said bolt hole and project to the outside of said support, a nut for holding said lever in place, said lever having a blind slot on its side adjacent to said support, and a pin on said support to project into said blind slot to form a fulcrum for said lever, substantially as shown and described. a
2. In a dental appliance, a base, a standard projecting upwardly from said base, a transverse plate rotatable on said standard, a support recessed to fit over said standard and receive the same, means for securing said support to said standard, said support having a vertical bore, a vertical slot on one side communicating with said bore, a plunger mounted in said bore and having a bolthole through the same with a countersunk portion to receive the bolt head, a bolt hav ing a head held in said plunger and projecting through said slot to the outside of said support, a lever pivoted to said bolt on the outside of the support, a nut for holding said lever on the bolt, said lever having a heel. portion provided with a slot, a pin on said support to one side of the support slot and located above a horizontal plane through the lower end of said support slot and below a horizontal plane through the upper end of said support slot, said pin adapted to project into said lever slot and form a shifting fulcrum for said lever whereby the leverage is increased as said plunger is lowered.
3. In a dental appliance, a base block having a vertical bore with a countersunk portion at its bottom, a standard having a head held in said countersunk portion and projecting upwardly through said bore, a draw plate swivelly mounted on said standard, a. support having a blind recess on said standard, said support being spaced from said base block to admit said draw plate between the same, means for securing said support to said standard, said standard having a vertical bore, a plunger reciprocable in said bore, and an operating lever mounted on the outside of said support and'having a fixedly-located pivotal connection with said plunger and a pln-and-slot connection .with said support, substantially as shown and described.
