COLLAR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Application filed May 26, 1915. Serial No. 30,478.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM S. VVIcK- HAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collar fasteners, being more particularly directed to a unitary device particularly adapted for securing in place of collars.
The main object of the invention is the prtduction of a fastener constructed preferably of a single length of material, with parts arranged for the convenient application of the fastener to the article to be secured, for interlocking the fastener with the article to prevent the accidental disconnection thereof, and further with parts arranged for connection of the fastener with the neck band of a shirt.
The invention in the preferred embodiment of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar, with the outer fold of the collar partly broken away, to illustrate the manner of connection of the fastener with the collar, and theipositioning of the fastener with respect to the fold of the collar; F ig. 2 is a detail view of a portion of a collar, also illustrating the fastener connected in the buttonhole of the collar; Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section illustrating the fastener in active position; Fig. t is a detail perspective of the fastener removed" from the collar, and clearly illustrating the front of the vided with oppositely disposed yieldablclimbs 6 which diverge upwardly from the apex 7 of said fastener. This attaching portion is adapted to be inserted in the rear buttonhole of the usual innerfold A of the collar B and positioned between the folds of the collar when in active position, as better shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and
owing to the particular configuration of this attaching portion greatly facilitates the application of the same to the collar. The upper terminals 8 of each of the limbs 6 is bent inwardly and upwardly inclined as at 9, to a distance substantially alining vertically with the inner portion of the apex or bite portion 7, of the V-shaped attaching portion 5. laterally and forwardly as at 10, thence downwardly and outwardly in spaced parallel relation with the upwardly inclined portion 9, as at 11, to present a pair of obliquely disposed diverging inverted U -shaped interlocking sections 12. It will therefore be seen when the Vshaped attaching member is applied in the manner heretofore described, it causes the interlocking sections 12 to be sprung inwardly, until the latter are alined with the rear buttonhole of the collar, whence they are sprung outwardly by the resiliency of the legs 6, and arrested in binding engagement with the side walls 13 of the buttonhole of the collar B. The outermost limb ll of the Ushaped interlocking sections 12, are inclined downwardly in spaced parallel relation with the limbs 5, for a portion of their length and at a point below the point of bending of the sections 12 therewith, as at 13, thence bent outwardly and upwardly in spaced parallel relation with the portion 13, as at 14, to form a pair of opposed diverging U-shaped selfengag ing neck band portions 15. The outermost limb 16 of the U-shaped neck band engaging portions is flattened as at 17 to facilitate the engagement of the portions under the neck band C, and render the same what might be termed as self-engaging portions, that is to say, after the fastener is attached to the collar and when it is desired to attach the collar to the shirt D, these portions will gradually ride up under the neck band. without the necessity of using either hand, and thereby when the collar is placed around the neck band C of the shirt, the fastening of the collar at the front can be immediately and readily accomplished. The U-shaped neck band engaging portions 15, are not only arranged in diverging relation and parallel with the limbs 6, but are further disposed at right angles with respect to the inverted U-shaped interlocking connectors 12, and adapted to frictionally engage with the neck band C of the shirt I), whereby it will not only prevent the riding The wire is thence curved become slightly worn or marred, andthere-- b aresentin the collar on the wearer at all times with a very' neat and attractive appearance.
Frrm the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. While I ha e described the principles of operation of the device together with the device which I new consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such advantages may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended thereto. I
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: v
A clamp as a substitute for a collar but ton for securing the back of a collar to'the back of a shirt band, formed from a piece of resilient wire which is bent to provide a v-shaped head that is adapted to be inserted through the button hole of the collar and to lie against the back of the collar, the angular limbs of the head being yieldable and having their upper terminals extended inends of the said U-shaped members being bent downwardly in a line one with each of the limbs of the head and from thence bent outwardly and upwardly to provide shirt neckband engaging members, and said members being reduced, and flattened from their t'ree ends to facilitate the engagement thereof with the neck band of the shirt.
In testimony whereof I affix. my signature in presence of two witnesses.
