To all `whom t may concern Be it known that LJAMES W. LEMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hardy, in the county of Sharp and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Destroying insects, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved machine for destroying insects and which can be also used as a vacuum cleaner for taking up dust and the like, the object of the invention being to provide an improved machine of this character whiclris simple in construction, which may be readily moved from place to place, from one room to another, and to and-from a porch, or the like, Iand which may be driven by a suitable motor and kept for a long time in continuous operation.

The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Figure l is a side elevation of an insect destroying machine constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View.

The main frame 1 is mounted on axles 2, 3, provided respectively with wheels 4, 5, and said main frame comprises longitudinal side bars 6, transverse front and rear cross bars 7, and 8, intermediate cross bars 9, and an intermediate longitudinal bar 10. A fifth wheel 11 is preferably provided for the front axle and the same is also preferably proof the frame is such as to enable the m-achine to be readily drawn through an ordinary door way from one room to another or from a room to the porch or the like.

A suitable platform 13 is on the rear portion of the main frame and supports a suitable motor 14 which is here indicated as an internal combustion engine and as provided with a shaft 15 having ily wheels 16 and a pulley 17. Frames 18 are secured on the sides of the main frame at a point midway between the front and rear ends thereof and are provided with bearings for the Shaft 19 of a rotary fan 20. The said fan comprises radial arms 21 and fan plates 22 which are bolted on the arms. 'llhe fan revolves in a 1,39. Hence the fanyis casing 23 which is secured to the frames 18 and said casing is provided on its sides with valves 24. A metallic elbow 25 is secured on the casingr at a suitable point and is adapted for the attachment of a flexible intake tube 26 which may be directed upwardly and is provided at its free or upper end with a funnel shaped spout 27 adapting the machine lfor use in removingr by suction. cobwebs or the like from ceilings and walls.

A suction pipe 28 also extends down wardly from the fan casing to within a short distance of the floor and is provided at its lower end with a spout 29 which has a hinged member 30 on one side, A discharge tube 31 is connected to the upper side of the fan casing as at 32 and discharges into a. tank 33 which may contain water or a poisonous solution or other suitable liquid or insecticide.

A countershaft 3l is mounted in bearings on the frames 18 and is provided with a pulley which is connected by an endless belt 3G with a smaller Apulley 37 on the fan shaft. The countershaft also has a pulley 38 which is smaller than the lower pulley 17 and is connected thereto by 'an endless belt driven -at a high rate of speed by the motor.

To use the machine for destroying insects, a sweet or other suitable bait is placed near the intake valves 2l, the elbow 25 and suction pipe 28 are out olf by the cutod valve with which they are provided, and the motor is started and caused to Irevolve the fan. The flies or other insects attracted by the sweetened or other suitable bait are carried into the fan casing through the valves 2i and blown by the blast from the fan through the pipe 31 and into the tank 33 where they are destroyed. lf desired, the machine can be' kept in operation over night or throughout an entire day or for any other suitable time and thus entirely rid the house or other place of noxious insects. By closing the valves 24 and opening the valve in the pipe 2S and running the machine over the floor, the dust and dirt will be sucked 'up therefrom through said pipe 28 and blown by the -fan into the w-ater in the tank. .The machine may also be used for removing potato bugs from growing plants and destroying such bugs.
