Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented tiet., 2A, 1.91%..
Application ledl March 25, 1916. Serial No. 86,734.
To all whom t may concern Be it known 'that li, DAVID J. HENDREN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Burnside, in the parish of Ascension and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lightning- Arresters; and ll do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved lightning arrester em.
bodying such features of construction as to render it highly efficient in use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
`With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novelconstruction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which: v
Figure-1 represents a top plan view of the improved lightning arrester, Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view therethrough, Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view through the lightning arrester.
Referring to the drawing i n detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout ,the severalviews, the numeral 5 indicates a base plate constructed of insulatingmaterial, and having a longitudinal recess 6 in the bottom thereof defining a depending supporting flange 7. A pair of binding posts 8 and 9 are anchored in the base plate 5 adjacent the ends of the latter and are provided with nuts 10 and 11, respectively,` whereby the terminals of the line wires of the circuit in which the arrester is interposed are connected therewith. The binding posts 8 and 9 are also electrically connected with the en-l larged ends 12 of a conductor 13 of flat serpentine formation positioned upon the base plate 5 and extending between the binding posts 8 and 9. rJlhe several convolutions of the serpentine `conductor 13 are rigidly secured to the base plate 5 by headed pins 14e, extending through the base plate and having the lower ends 15 bent back'against thev tcp face of the recess or cavity 6, so as to rigidly secure the anchoring pins in position. The enlarged ends 12 of the serpentine conductor are formed with a plurality of teeth or points 16, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The ground conductor, designated generally'by the-numeral 17, is preferably constructed of sheet brass and is rigidly secured upon the base plate 5 by headed pins 18 secured in position in the manner of the pins 14. The ground conductor 17 is formed with a serpentine opening or .slot 19 receiving the serpentine conductor 13, which latter is arranged in spaced relation to the edges of the slot 19, so as to provide a tortuous spark gap 20. The base plate 5 is formed with a serpentine groove 21, extending between the edges of the serpentine conductor 13 and the serpentine slot 19, and the ends of the latter are enlarged, as indicated at 22, so as to accommodate the enlarged ends 12 of serpentine conductor 13 and providing a spark gap 23 between the points 16 and the edges of the enlarged portions 22.
After the ground conductor 17 and serpentine electrode 13 have been fastened in position by the' anchoring pins 18 and 14:,
respectively, the cavity or recess 6 in the bottom of the base plate 5 is filled with plaster of Paris 24 or other suitable plastic material so as to render the lightning arrester more substantial and stronger.
What lf claim is: v
1. A lightning arrester including a base plate, a pair of binding posts secured in said base plate, a serpentine conductor connecting said binding posts having enlarged ends, points vprojecting outwardly of the enlarged ends of said conductor, a ground conductor having a serpentine slot receiving said serpentine conductor and terminating in enlarged openings receiving the enlarged ends of said serpentine conductor.
2.v A lightning arrester including an insulating base plate, a pair of binding posts secured in spaced relation to said base plate, a conductor connecting said binding posts, a ground conductor surrounding and arranged in spaced relation to the first-mentioned conductor, said base plate having a 5 theglower ends directed angularly; and a plastic vfiller molded into 'said recess and nelosingthe angular lower ends of said pins.
Intestimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
