To all whom it may concern Be it known that L'FLoYD H. OGDEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Roxbury, Boston, county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Snapl asteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to snap fasteners specially adapted for use on garments, though having other and more general fields of usefulness, of a type composed of two relatively shallow cup members, one of which is formed to constitute a snap socket and the other to constitute a head. or male member adapted to be pressed into said socket, both of said members being suitably perforated and adapted to be sewed on to a fabric or other sheet as by a power operated sewing machine.
The distinctive features and objects of the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and will be thereafter pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 hows my improved fastener enlarged and in central vertical section, the two fastener membersbeing shown applied to sheets of fabric; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the socket member; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the head or male member; Fig. 4 is a sectional View on line 4-4]: of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing the two fastener parts assembled, taken on lines 66 of Figs. 2 and 3 for the two portions of the fastener; and Fig. 7 is an elevation of the fastener parts assembled, all of said views being considerably enlarged.
The socket member of my improved fastener is indicated at 10 as of shallow cup form with a flat bottom portion and an upright flange portion 11. In accordance with my invention the top of this flange portion is somewhat distorted from a normal circular form in cross section, so that it is slightly bulged out at two opposite points as indicated at 12. This results in a drawing or crimping in of the intermediate side portions of the flange 11 at its top edge, more Specification of Letters Patent.

particularly at points quadrantally distant from the points 12 as indicated at 13. This crimping in of opposite edge portions 18, 13 will in this way occur as a'relatively abrupt bend or crimp inward of the extreme top portion of the flange 11 as best seen in Figs. 1 and 4. The resultingoutward bulge or projection of the portions 12 of the flange is not of great extent, and any small excresence that might otherwise result therefrom may be avoided by cutting away the top edge at these opposite points to a small extent as seen at 14. The head or male member of the fastener is likewise a shallow cup shaped member 15 with a peripheral flange portion 16 projecting therefrom. In accordance with my invention this flange portion is preferably circular in cross section and is formed with a relatively abrupt corner edge 17 at an intermediate portion thereon, the flange diverging outward to said corner edge 17 and then turning inward at an obtuse angle as shown. The provision of this corner edge on the head or male member 15 restricts the period of contact with the socket edges 13 so that said socket edges do not tend to wear sharp so quickly. Said corner edge in conjunction with the abruptly inturned opposite top edge portions 18 of the socket member provides for a distinct snap action between the fastener members insuring a correct and complete seating and interengagement between the members. The depth of the flange 16 and the position of the corner edge 17 thereon is preferably so proportioned with reference to the spacing of the crimped in edges 13 from the base of the socket 10, that as the fastener members are snapped together, the flange edge 18 of the head or male member will seat on the bottom of the socket member 10, some little before the spring force of the crimped in edges 13 is exhausted, whereby the resilient action of said edges continues to press and hold the members together, and with the flange edge 18 securely seated at all times on the bottom of the socket member 10, whereby any looseness and tendency to working out of the fastener members one from the other by a small movement therebetween is avoided. I also consider it an important feature that this impingement 0f the flange edge 18 and the pressure thereof as described upon the bottom of the socket member 10 is on a relatively large peripheral area, i. 6.,

nearly the full circumference of the fastener, this also contributing to a rigid and reliable connection between the parts. In accordance with my invention the bottom of the head or male member 15 is preferably positioned by the seating of the flange edge 18 so that it projects outward from the edges 13 of the socket to some little extent as indicated at 19, this protecting said edges from any tendency to catch on fabric or the like. It is to be noted that the corner edge 17 of the head member is located a substantial distance from the edge 18, this providing a relatively long conical flange portion to guide the male member to the socket.
I consider the provision of the opposite crimped in top edge portions 13 of the socket flange to be of special value and importance since thereby as the head or male member is only engaged on a limited area at the opposite sides of the socket flange, a greater yielding is permitted than would be the case with an engagement all around the circular edge of a socket circular in cross section. Thusmyimproved socket combines the strength and holding capacity of an integral socket flange with the yielding capability of a slotted flange. In this connection it will also be understood that the particular form of the crimped in top edge portions 13 provides a substantially greater de gree of resiliency than would be the case for example, were'said socket merely formed of a general elliptical oroblong shape, since thereby is obtained the advantage of such oblong shape with the further accruing resiliency of the crimped in edges themselves. From these considerations it will be seen that a much greater degree of variation in stock ist-aken care of by this special formation of the interengaging flange portions, this being a feature of importance in practice, since stock for this purpose as ordinarily obtainable is not sufflciently uniform so that non-slotted fastener members engaging eachother all around or for the major portion of their circumference can be obtained uniform enough so as to be dependable in use. By reference to Fig. 6, it will be noted that the opposite'pressed out socket edges 12 also have a valuable function in aiding to guide the head or male member 15 into the socket. The members of my improvedsnap fastener are preferably formed with threaded holes 20 through the bottoms thereof properly spaced so that said members. may be sewed to sheets of fabric F by a'suitable. power operated sewing machine. It shouldbe noted that the corner formation.17 on the flange of the male member serves a further function in this connection, of cooperating with the clamp of the button sewing machine to facilitate positioning and holding thefastener member in operative Certain of the features herein exhibited may be used to advantage apart from others and in general, I desire the present embodiment to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description, to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.1. A snap fastener, comprising a socket member formed as a relatively shallow, generally circular cup, having opposite portions of the sides thereof projecting slightly outward and with a relatively abrupt inturned crimp of the extreme upper edge of intermediate portions, and a head member formed to engage said socket member with a snap fit.
2. A snap fastener, comprising a socket member formed of relatively shallow cup shape with a peripheral flange having opposite portions thereof with their extreme top edges having a relatively abrupt inward crimp, and quadrantally distant portions slightly pressed outward, and a head member adapted to be fitted into said socket with a snap action.
A snap fastener, comprising a socket member formed of relatively shallow cup shape with a peripheral flange having opposite portions thereof, with their extreme top edges having a relatively abrupt inward crimp, and quadrantally distant portions sli htly pressed outward, and a head member having a peripheral edge adapted to be engaged by said crimped in portions of said socket member, and arranged so that said crimped in edges hold said head member with a constant pressure against said socket member as said members are assembled, whereby the parts are held secure against looseness with respect to each other.
4. A snap fastener, comprising a socket member having a peripheral flange with portions turned inward to engage and hold a head member, and a head member having a peripheral edge to be engaged by the inturned flange portions of said socket member, said socket member and said head member having cooperative portions arranged so that as said members are interengaged a peripheral edge of said head member is held constantly pressed against the bottom of said socket member adjacent the periphery and throughout the circumference thereof by the resilient action of said socket flange, whereby the parts are held secure against looseness with respect to each other.
5. A snap fastener, comprising a socket member having flange portions inturned abruptly at the extreme edge thereof, and a head member having a peripheral flange formed with a well defined intermediate peripheral corner edge adapted to be engaged by the inturned flange portion of said socket to produce an accentuated snap action as said members are forced together.
6. A snap fastener, comprising a socket member formed with a peripheral flange having crimped in portions at its extremity, and a head member having a peripheral flange adapted to lit into the flange of said socket With a snap action the depth of said flange being relatively such that as said 10 members are pressed together the extremity of the socket flange is held spaced at little below the bottom of said head member by the seating of the flange on said head memher in the bottom of said socket.
